Another bottle was snatched out of the cooler and tucked into the koozie in her hand. She'd bought it for Will on one of her trips down to the coast; it read "Master Baiter" in big red print across the side, framed by a swimming trout. She thought he'd get a kick out of it.

"I just don't get why touching others equates to approval, or affection. I hate it."

Will hated when she did that – staring without seeing. It unnerved him a bit, and not just because intense eye contact made him uncomfortable. Deep down, he could see and feel her own personal hells bubbling beneath the surface, and it made her dissociation of sorts all the more unsettling.

Clarice finally spoke, and a part of Will wanted to laugh. Though when he caught the distraught look in her eyes, he realized she wasn’t joking. This wasn’t normal for her. It almost seemed laughable that he, himself, had experienced more intimacy than she ever had.

“Jack’s not warm and fuzzy,” Will agreed. “But you? He likes you…you’re like a daughter to him. He and Bella never got to have children, so…” Momentarily, a cloud fell over his face. Will wondered if he would ever have children, or if he’d fall under that tragic umbrella of lonely barrenness. 

“I wouldn’t worry about it,” he finally finished. “Jack doesn’t have poor intentions, if that’s what you’re concerned with. He’s certainly prickly, but he shows affection in his own rude, gruff way.” Here, Will allowed a small smile. “You’re lucky. When he wanted to show me affection, I got a punch to the shoulder.”

Clarice listened to him, unblinking, her nail dragging over and catching on the glass ridges circling the bottom of her beer bottle. The dogs were wrestling in the grass and dirt - her gaze fell upon them.

"Nothing, it's..."

Deep breath.

"... Jack hugged me into his side on stage last week. At the awards ceremony. That's the most he's ever given me." She paused for a moment, jaw set and lips pursed.

"It wasn't for me, and it wasn't for him. I don't know, I thought I'd ask you. You've known him longer."

“That’s presuming that there is a point,” Will muttered, peering back at her from over the rims of his glasses. “After all, how we’re supposed to feel -- how we’re supposed to behave -- is all a bit of a social construct, when you really stop to think about it. Maybe it’s all the emotion and connection that’s wrong.”

He paused a moment, taking a pensive sip from his beer. “...Or maybe that’s just me being a bitter, miserable ol’ git,” he quipped, his mouth quirking into a wry smile. “What’s brought this on anyway, Starling? You’re not usually this philosophical... Or at least, not until your third beer.”

So Hannibal is on US/CAN Netflix now so I better see it in the top 10 trending soon! If you haven’t watched this show, I urge you to drop EVERYTHING and do it! Literally the best series you can watch. PERIOD. The cinematography, cast, the writing! Amazing! And maybe if we make enough noise (fannibals have been rallying for this for years) we can get season 4. Lets do this people!
