Another closeup of this weekend’s drawing 💁 Art nerd time! The Bennu bird, thought to be modeled after a heron, was depicted in Egyptian art and specifically worshipped at Heliopolis. Because of its association with Ra (the sun god) and Osiris (god of the Underworld), and its name being derived from “rise” and “shine”, it is also believed to be the origin of the myth of the Greek Phoenix. Herodotus wrote about seeing depictions of this bird, noting that it appeared in Egypt only every 500 years. Interestingly there is much debate about whether or not this myth developed from a real species.

As always, do your own research - Egyptian art history is something I could read about endlessly.
