Uptake report
I have loved this project so much. With creating a blog it got me very excited to have my own classroom. To have to sit down and research different ideas for may own classroom. I found many of my videos on youtube and all the picture are from google. With this project it just reminded me that this is what I’m supposed to do for the rest of my life. I cannot wait the finish college and to be able to setup my own classroom, then have my own students. I’m just so excited!

Classroom rules

The classroom rules are really more for the students to know but for the teachers so you have a smooth running classroom. It is not hard to sit down and create a poster with a few basic rules like the ones I have posted above. This will help your classroom run so much smoother. Then if a child is have a meltdown over something you are able to take them to the post and read off what the rules are. This is just an easy reminder. I would also say that having a quite area in your classroom is a must! In classrooms I have worked in we had a quite cube it was just a small cube with holes in all sides that if a student needed a break they are able to just go over to the cube and take sometime to their selves. In the cube we have a weighted blanket and a few small fidgets that they would be able to play with the help them calm down.

ABC’s
youtube

ABC!!!! For children their alphabet is a HUGE thing! Once you learn the ABC’s you can learn so much more and for little kids its so exciting. I have very similar technics for teaching the alphabet and numbers, but for the ABC’s one of the best things you can do is play and sing the song. For your lower students you might start with just singing their ABC’s then moving on to what sounds each letter makes. For the higher students you might sing then what sounds does the letter make and then add another step like a sight word that starts with the letter you are working on. Just like in my last post you can also create the cookie sheet activity with letters. You can have print offs of just the alphabet going in order or having sight words for the higher students to find the letter and spell out the words

Number!

NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS! Numbers can be a very difficult thing for children to learn, but it is very important life skill for all children. in the picture above would be great for a math lesson for all of your students. Not all students will be at the same levels so you need to have things for the lower students and the higher students. For the first picture that is a very simple activity to do with your lower students. All you need is cookie sheets, a print off of whatever you want the children to be learning (numbers, letters), and then some magnetic letters or numbers. This activity will be having the children not only learn the numbers but also the order of the numbers. Then with having small numbers to place on the cookie sheet their working on the fine motor-skills. In the second picture it is showing how to easily add and subtract. For example if the problem is 6+3=?. Then you will have your student put their figure on the 6 and jump forward 3 whatever number they end on is the answer to the problem. You can easily do the same things with subtraction but jumping backwards.

How to tie your shoes
youtube
Tying your shoes is a huge process for all children! I learned how to tie my shoes in first grade. I remember going to school the next day and showing all my friends that I learned how to tie my shoes. To tie your shoes it take not only the knowledge of how to tie them but also the fine motor-skills to be able to physically tie them. The way I would teach my children to tie is starting with their shoes sitting on the floor and going step by step on how to tie then. After they have that down I would move to them putting their shoes on then tying them step by step and slowly stop helping them with every step. The video above is a prefect video for learning how to tie your shoes. It goes through the steps and row child is able to do it with them them at the same time.

Getting Dressed
youtube
In this post we are talking about getting dressed. For most children they are able to get theirselves dressed my the age 4-5, but for many children with disabilities will sometimes struggle do basic things for themselves. I think that the video above is a great was to show the children how to do it then having them try it on there own or with assistance and slowly start them doing it more and more on their own. I would start with the simpler things like socks and sweatpants so there isn't any buttons or zippers. Then slowly move up to harder things like shirts, buttons, tying shoes, and zipping zippers. With any kind of life skill it will be a slow process and get very frustrating as an adult that is able to do all of this small things. You just have to remember that they some day understand it and it will be an amazing day so just keeping working up to that amazing day!

How to brush your teeth and wash your hands! For many students in the special education programs they need extra help with basic life skills. Lot of the children I have worked with come from families that also struggle with disabilities. So many basic things like learning to brush your teeth and doing it twice a day doesn't always happen at home. The classroom I work in last year everyday after lunch all the kids would have to go into the bathroom and brush their teeth. About half of them where able to do it without help but a few of them we would have to do hand over hand with them. Every morning the toothpaste would be put on each of their toothbrushes and placed into the bathroom until it was lunch time. They all slowly learned that you find your own toothbrush, go to the sink, get it wet, brush all their teeth, spit, and wipe their faces.
Then with washing your hand is a lot like what he had to do with brushing teeth. We had to do hand or hand with most of the kids to make sure that their hands were clean. So we would just start it with turning on the water, getting soak into one hand, rubbing their hands together, then rinsing the soap off, and getting the towel to dry their hands. We also work on them with singing their ABC’s while they were washing and when they got done with the song they could be done washing their hands.
With do of this life skills and it be a long process but you will slowly start seeing improvements and it makes it all worth it. in the videos are great videos for children to watch and be able to slowly learn how to do both of this life skills.
