today was a good day. today shen li could both see and taste— her favorite of the senses if she were forced to choose. unfortunately, that meant she couldn't hear the person as they approached or spoke to her, or catch a scent of them. when she finally registered their presence, she looked up at him quizzically. "did you say something?" she asked, her gaze moving to focus on his mouth. "and would you mind repeating it? i can't hear you, but i might be able to read your lips."

shen li has been in town for a couple of months ( est. early february 2024)

what is your character's job?

she does not have one at this moment... she also can turn stone into gold so she's been doing that for the time being.

where has your character been pulled from in their fandom?

((spoiler, violence, gore(?) tw)) shen li is being pulled from towards the end of episode 26. she's being pulled from after passing out by having these black iron rods that were twisted through her flesh/bone removed from her body.

has any magic affected your character?

yes, just a little bit. so, the ill matched 'spiritual aura/core' in her is not going to blow dc up in fiery blaze as imminently as it is in the show.

off the bat, as i was looking for quotes to use i've found that the subtitles are different depending on site. most importantly, on the title of the realms. i did watch on viki first so 'demon realm' is more prominent in my head over 'spiritual realm' so that is what i'll be using.

so, she is a demon phoenix general. she has many titles including azure sky king, her lordship, demon lord of chaos, and lord bicang. (these all could just be the same thing w/ different translations but just going to list them all)

extremely headstrong and 'for her people'. she'd sacrifice herself in a heartbeat if it would save her people.

she is a thousand year old orphan, believing she was born on the battlefield were both of her parents were killed.

she was taken in by the queen of the demon realm, who was also a great friend of her mother's.

she is a born and raised warrior. the general in charge of the ongoing war the demon realm is in.

the demon realm suffers from constant 'chimei' / 'monster' attacks.

in an effort to create a better relationship between the immortal & demon realms, she was arranged to marry one of the immortals in an effort to create a bridge & (hopefully) receive assistance with the monsters.

but shen li has always hated how the demon realm is viewed as lesser to the immortals & are always needing to bend to their will.

basically, she thinks all immortals are lazy lay abouts with zero worries and this marriage is not going to make anything better (and she's not wrong lbr).

so she runs away to the mortal realm... and ends up stuck in her phoenix form and mistakenly taken for a chicken.

and that's the end of the non-spoiler background (as this is all pretty much in the synopsis / first episode)

from here on there's spoilers. A LOT happens between the first episode and the 26th that i'm pulling her from. so this is really only going to be about the point i've taken her from and not an entire recap even though i could go on forever fr.

so, the point she is taken from she has been severely wounded and her powers are not at full force.

as mentioned above shen li had these six twisted iron rods removed from her body (ankles, wrists and upper arms). immediately prior to this, she was chained up and tortured for the 'pearl' / 'demon core' inside of her.

she still has the core, but it is unstable as it is not melding well with the cultivation training she has had.

basically, her body is on the verge of exploding. her skin is extremely hot to the touch. she doesn't feel it, but others will.

the magic that held her captive also messed with her senses.

every day a different sense works or doesn't work. so, she could be blind and lack the sense of smell one day then deaf and unable taste and touch another. it's a mixed bag.

so she is extremely vulnerable atm (which she hates).

even though she doesn't know much outside of war, she is pretty lowkey? she enjoys a bit of a mundane life and deep down longs for one.

even without her senses problem, she's not the type to just go around looking for a fight or a war to start/win because it's all she knows.

she really only fights to save others. so she while she won't start anything, she also won't sit by if her help is needed (especially for people she cares for).

p much just trying to get a handle on her disabilities rn though.

random facts: big eater, even bigger drinker, weapons collector, saddened her red plume spear is dust (so she thinks), gets annoyed easily, is constantly fanning herself to cool off, can turn stones into gold, is seen as more masculine (from her name to hobbies to titles given and just how she holds herself).

randomness:

worldbuilding: the world is basically split into three realms: mortal realm, immortal realm, and demon realm. the mortal realm is the lowest realm. the immortal and demon realm used to be one realm called the 'heavenly realm', but after millions of years of fighting, they came up with a truce of sorts to split it up.

found out the author of this novel also wrote heart protection (back from the brink that yan hui is from), so i think i must like their work ?! although ngl i'm preferring the novel for back from the brink vs the show so far. have yet to read this one, but read others say this drama follows the novel pretty faithfully which has me excited. and just going to rec watching the drama to anyone who wants something not too heavy.

"there's nothin' you could've fixed. it was my time." she tried hard to fight it back then. she worked until she was unable to to save herself. she wanted to stay so badly... but she has since grown to accept what happened to her. she stepped back from the hug, but still within arm's length as she studied him more closely. "and for some reason i was given more of it to be here and gettin'g' to see you and angel again."

Connor was proud of his aunt as he saw her being so attentive to her surroundings. Not that it was a surprise to him. Many may have underestimated her, but Connor knew she was a badass under that soft and loving personality. Pictures of Illyria flash within his mind as she approaches him, and he can't stop his eyes from getting teary. "You know... I'm so sorry, Aunt Fred. I know saying sorry isn't gonna fix any of it, but... I'm sorry for my mistakes and for what happened to you after I was gone."

talia's gaze roamed over the few people near them. they all seem too preoccupied with one another to notice what should appear as just some kinky pda. but she realized she had to ease the other in. Chi Woo's eyes widen when the woman waves someone else over. They're not quite sure they're ready yet. The thought still scares them a bit, even though they desperately want to try. "In front of everyone?" They know they didn't necessarily have to kill the woman, they could stop, but could they actually?

"you having the lack of the first two? got it." just what they needed tonight — someone just like them. they had gone from nursing her first and, what she had planned to be only, glass of jim beam to swallowing the harsh liquor down in one gulp. signaling the bartender for refill when they brought over the other's drink. truth be told, he hadn't exactly expected an answer, felt it was rather that kind of question someone just mumbled a more or less disgruntled acknowledgement to before both parties went back to minding their own business. and yet here here he got his answer and daniel failed at surpressing a deep sigh, shrugging his bag off his shoulder and placing it on the bar. " courtesy, manners, appearances, whatever, take your pick, i guess. " a signal to the bartender, a few moments later daniel found himself with a grasshopper in hand. " not exactly like i was interrupting anything here, was i. bar's reserved for loners and businessmen contemplating infidelity. and you don't strike me as a business person, so. "

for half a second, blair considered using her usual methods of finding out what serena was hiding. she had to mentally remind herself that she was turning a new leaf. scheming behind serena's back, no matter how good her intentions, was off-limits. she just had to let go of control and trust the other. "you better. you know how much i need to know every single minute detail."

serena nodded her head, a small smile on her lips. "of course." there was no way that at the end of the day she could keep anything from blair. that seemed both impossible but also like it could be a crime in all fifty states. "i'll lay it all on you, including but not limited to the real nitty gritty of it all."

"as am i," she said before lifting herself up from the floor. "okay, let's see here..." she examined the doors for a good place to grip. she'd rather not lose a finger in the process, but the crack between the doors seemed to be the only option. "i think if we lean against the threshold to use as leverage, we might be able to pry it open."

"Fantastic..." Mulan sighed, putting her hair back into a braid and out of her face. "We can try. I am better with swords but it's worth trying." Mulan was more cunning than strong. "Alright if we both grab one we might be able to get it open." She looked at the door. it was so smooth that getting a good grip would be difficult.

"then i guess you just aren't as smart as people say," anya countered. the former demon's brows lifted at the man's flustered reaction. definitely porn, she thought. she rolled her eyes as he didn't give her a chance to answer. it was a simple enough response: she took him as a member of the male species. the simple answer was usually the right one with them. "fine. but you don't need to get all repressed on me. there's nothing to be ashamed of. it's perfectly normal. a bit on the verge of addiction if you're using the work computer, but i won't judge." as she continued on, her focus stayed on the screen and worked to fix the problem. after trying a few keyboard combinations, she found a winner in ctrl+alt+delete, starting a soft reboot.

"Not purposefully ignorant." He replied, although he supposed there was some sort of wilful refusal at learning how to use computers. But he could just about manage with the system at the Magic Box... well, most of the time. Giles sputtered, eyes widening at her question. "What? Heavens, no, what sort of man do you take me for?" He paused for a moment before sighing and shaking his head. "Actually, Anya, don't answer that question. Just...." he gestured helplessly to the frozen screen, "fix it."

dohee looked over the second dress with skepticism. it was far from what she usually wore, but she took it all the same. "i'm not sure... but i'll give it a try." dohee entered the fitting room with both outfits in hand. she decided to get the experimental dress out of the way first. after undressing, she slipped the dress on over her head. the fabric felt nice, but that didn't matter as much as how it looked on her. she looked over herself, still unsure. it was different, maybe too different. stepping out of the dressing room, she did a 180 turn for the other. "i'm not sure it's me... what do you think?"

"Of course they would. That's why I pulled them." She looks at it and nods. "I think this is my favorite. Go try that one on, and I can find some more clean looking clothes. But!" She pulls a dress out. "Try this on for me. It may not be your usual style, but I feel like this would look so good on you."

"i am definitely going to win. it's called beginner's luck," dongkyung countered with a chuckle. her hand wrapped around his, falling in step with him as they headed out. "we'll see who will be proving who."

"Sounds good. It'll be a lot of fun." He laughs. "You actually think you're gonna beat me? There's no way. You're so on." He grabs her hand. "We have to go now. I have to prove to you that I'm gonna beat you."

"i don't even think there's enough time in the day to even do a quarter of everything," dohee continued with a laugh. dohee nodded her head, understanding those exact sentiments. there wasn't much else dohee had time for outside of work, so fun would be a welcome change. dohee stuffed her phone back into her purse. she had expected an overwhelming sense of anxiety to wash over her with the loss, but it never came. instead she broke out into an easy-going smile. "yes! we'd be remiss if we didn't do super touristy stuff along the way," she affirmed, linking her arm with the other's before adding, "and we have to end with a celebratory cake."

"as fun as that sounds i really don't know if there is time in the day for everything." zola joked back as she looked at the other. there had to be something that she could decide on doing, anything even. "yeah. i mean, i don't really know how to not just spend my days studying and working. but i guess it wouldn't hurt to have fun today." there was a grin on her lips as she looked at the other. "awesome!" zola then moved to turn her own phone off. "come on, the city is ours for the taking. lunch, garden walk. we should also do some like... super touristy stuff. for the fun of it."

yuri's smile widened that the other kept to her words. how easy it was to get the other on board. no promises, threats, or manipulating— her usual tactics. "do you know of a good place to start?"

"really? well i love that for us." jessica admitted with a grin that pulled up to the corners of her lips. "how can i say no to that? come on, let's find some trouble to get in to.'' the red head was ready to cause some waves.

"isn't it? i feel like every day i find something new to explore here." they might be neighbors, but doom's apartment was somehow far superior to hers. flooding aside, it was immaculately decorated and seemed like a maze at times. she took a seat on the couch, eagerly patting next to her for jina to join. "i've been on edge all day with anticipation. do tell!"

"hmm... i'm always for the meddling variety." the young witch tended to use her magic to give people that tiny push in a direction she believed best for them. she believed herself to be helping. "i don't think the quantification for how much of a menace the two of us can be together exists... yet."

Lily sat down at the table and sighed. "He tried to steal my purse in front of my face. Like, I can see you, clearly. We are talking and he just tried to ruin. I grabbed him, took my purse, and walked off. He's lucky I didn't punch him in the face."

"it is very nice. a little spooky..." sabrina comments. a park, like other locations frequented mostly by children, always appeared creepier when lifeless. "which is exactly my kind of vibe."
