“Well, well, my eyes may deceive me.”

Alex’s blood ran cold. This could only mean one thing.

“Alexandra, the Countess of Sussex… is that you? I heard the rumors you ran off on your fiancé but I didn’t believe them to be true. Yet here you are. Your father must be livid.”

Alex raised Spencer’s rifle out of rage at this man she didn’t know outwardly speculating about her life. “My life is none of your business,” she shouted from her place on the porch. Surely someone would come up from the barn upon seeing this man’s car. Right?

“Dragging your family’s honor through the mud? Ending up here, on this ranch in the middle of Montana, brandishing a gun in my face like some kind of brazen feral woman? Oh this is far too good to be anything but my business.” He snarled, like a Doberman would at an intruder. Except he was the intruder. And she was his prey. He took a few steps forward. “Why don’t we have a tea and a chat? I think you’ve gotten yourself lost…”

Alex took three large steps toward the edge of the porch, her once shaky hands strong now on the gun. “You will leave this property before I put this rifle to some good.”

“Oh darling,” his smile was wicked, “I can think of plenty ways to put that—“

The sound of galloping hooves brought everyone’s attention to the west. Finally, she thought, someone was here.

But it wasn’t just someone. She almost dropped the rifle in shock.

“Get the hell off my property.”

Spencer Dutton put his horse between her and Donald Whitfield as he pointed a pistol between Whitfield’s eyes.

Alex was too busy staring in disbelief to hear Donald’s laugh, “Oh the prodigal son returns. How fitting.”

“Don’t make me ask you again.”

The 'write for yourself uwu' culture shift has done real damage to fic writers imo. I recently had a post on the importance of strategic commenting break containment and I'm surprised by how many strangers who rb it in agreement feel the need to reassure in the tags that they do write for themselves, but...

There is a kernel of truth in the heart of this sentiment--if you only chase stats, you are unlikely to find joy in your writing. At the same time, I think we've veered too far in the other direction.

It is only natural to want engagement and the write for yourself crowd often overlooks how communal an effort fic writing usually is. So many story ideas are born from casual discussions about h/c's and favourite scenes and what ifs and the comment box is a cornerstone of this process. Not only can the discussions in the comment box be a hub for idea generation on their own, but even when the said idea generation takes place in DMs or Discord chats, commenting is often the first/easiest way into befriending authors; it's where community building starts.

Further, the write for yourself crowd similarly overlooks that the things a writer can write for themselves are often vast and many at any given time, and relative engagement levels across fandoms/ships can play a large part in which of those ideas a writer chooses to pursue--or whether they choose to publish their finished work at all.

In sum, I don't think we need to be this apologetic as writers for wanting feedback and engagement for what we post -- writing is hard work and it's only human that we want something external out of it in turn, however rewarding the process might intrinsically be.

Hey fanfiction writers: If no one's ever told you this before, it's not just fanfiction.

It's something you spent hours, days, maybe even months on, pouring your heart out onto a page because you were so full of passion and thoughts about a story or characters, you felt like you were going to explode if you didn't get it out. Maybe you lost sleep because your mind was racing with ideas or you forgot to eat or drink water because you were so focused. Maybe your back aches from being hunched over for so long, unmoving. Maybe you even felt like you were going a little feral because you were so excited about what you were creating, or were frustrated when you got stuck. Either way, you put your heart, mind, soul, and body into making something.

It's okay to want people to read it, and it's okay if you're disappointed that they don't or it doesn't get as much of a reaction as you were hoping for. Humans are social creatures. Sure, we write for ourselves, but we also share because the joy of doing so is just as powerful as the joy of the process. Of having created something.

We all experience that joy and that disappointment, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

So it's okay. It's not just fanfiction.
