yknow how in leopardstar’s honor, they changed leopardstar’s backstory so that rather than having supportive adoptive siblings that went as far as delaying their apprentice ceremony for her, and having the clan spoil her out of pity, they made her adoptive sister abuse her, removed the delay bit, and heavily downplayed the spoiling so that instead shes a poor little meow meow?
everyone’s already talked about how it’s a lame attempt to go “oh she’s sympathetic because she’s a bullying victimmm” rather than dig into the complexities of her character, but personally, that stuff sticks out to me as another example of the new team being wayyy more meanspirited than vicky.
like… leopardkit’s backstory was tragic but it was nice to see riverclan be nice to her and for everyone to step up for her, even if she was spoiled in the process. its one of the parts of crookedstar’s promise that really sticks out to me, honestly, how the cats came together to help out this orphaned kitten because of how horrible her birth was. it’s a sweet moment to come out of a terrible thing, yknow?
and in her SE, they replace that sweetness with even more trauma with no real payoff to it. like i don’t think the skyheart stuff goes anywhere from what i’ve seen. and it feels so on-brand for the new team, which constantly skips over positive stuff like twigbranch becoming a nicer mentor offscreen, squirrelflight playing with her grandkids, etc in favor of more miserable arguments.
i think that’s why i like revisiting older books still but the new books completely drained me to the point of disinterest. the older books still have their mean-spirited moments (looks at vicky and her opinions on writing romance) but at least they have the nice moments to balance it out. new team books feel allergic to that sort of thing, or at least heavily prefer to wallow in the miserable material without the nice payoff.

it is great to see this surge of focus on leafpool and squirrelflight's bond but i think we need to then understand the that ivypool and dovewing are the foil to that in that they are not that close and do not have that kind of unshakable bond and all their "attempts" are compulsive "well you're family" bullshit

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like the Erins should play around more with the concept of a leader having multiple lives and having the ability to DIE multiple times without consequence? My memory might be a little foggy, but it always seemed like leaders dying was just glossed over almost?
Give me a fresh, capable leader being absolutely traumatized because holy shit did I actually just die!?!?
Give me a Puss In Boots: Last wish style story where a reckless leader has to grapple with the fact that they only have one life left.
Give me an absolutely ancient leader who has been a leader since forever and is old enough so that everyone they held dear is dead forgotten, so old that they forgot who they once held dear.
Like, there's so much potential here and it's (to my knowledge) never addressed!

a bad show? that's nothing? a good show? sure. but a bad show that, for a brief moment, becomes very good, and then never is again? that'll drive a person to madness

She would not fucking say that. Yes she said that in canon, but I perceive a greater truth unaffected by her writer's misogyny

Not putting it in the tags of the last post but some of the notes arguing against it being like "actually wcs isn't xenophobic/ableist/racist/misogynistic/etc. bc wcs fans just cherry pick examples" and then they reveal that they actually haven't read a wcs book since they were in middle school 20 years ago

Oversimplification of the source material is the strongest weapon people can use to diminish legitimate arguments against a story that aim to actually criticize genuine problems with the writing

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
