THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING

i feel like we’re always mischaracterising todd. this boy is not a shy and timid mouse who’s just in the movie to look cute and squish-able and be neil’s potential love interest!! every look portrayed by Ethan Hawke in this film shows todd’s internal feelings without the need for him to speak. todd anderson has found his voice, he is passionate about the people he loves, he is an observer, he is sharp. he is a guy willing to scour the seven seas, to walk across the earth on his bare feet, just to stand up for the people he loves, every blister and wound plastered all over the surface of his foot, a mark that makes his love for you so evident!! even if doing so makes him look like an embarrassment!! this boy won’t speak very much, but every word that escapes from the crooks of his mouth, every word he writes, is a loud cry yearning for someone to notice him, and to appreciate him for him. (which would’ve been neil 💔) todd anderson is so much more than we all illustrate him to be and we must realise that!!

i truly don’t think that our fandom talks nearly enough about mr keating and todd’s relationship. i’ll seriously never get enough of the ‘teacher who does everything to help a student they see potential in” trope. like the todd we see entering welton is not the same todd we see in the last frame of the film. and it’s definitely keating who was the main contributor to this beautiful change in him. he was the first adult to ever look at todd in the eye and say “i see you, kid.” the first adult to ever make an effort to make him feel seen. the first teacher to step out of conformities and to be more than a teacher to his boys. todd being the first to stand up to salute to him and overcoming his anxiety doing it in front of his class, he’s going to keep growing from there, growing into the person keating would have wanted him to be over time. even if keating wouldn’t be there to watch it all happen. he’d always be there in todd’s heart, a part of him instilled in the adolescent boy always.

i hate when people mischaracterize todd like "oh silly shy gay boy" and act like he wouldn't stand up for himself when that is literally HIS CHARACTER BUILDING the point is that he learns from keating and neil that his words and thoughts are not inferior and he stands up for himself and for keating and for neil bc he knows that words have power and that art is the beauty of life like HE'S NOT A SILLY SHY BOY HE'S A GODDAMN PROUD POET HAAAASKAJSHAISJZHAJ I HATE FANON TODD
