            Oh how he couldn’t be more wrong. Faded crystal eyes shift and glance in his direction and Kolete takes in his appearance in quiet, ignoring the GNAWING FEELING that the very earth has fallen silent, trees and stars holding their breath as time dared to slow down around them. As if those words ( muttered nonchalantly ) didn’t punch her in the gut harder than any blow she had ever felt before. It would be minutes before she could catch her breath properly. 

            Though Riku looks the same as he did only minutes earlier - everything is different. The epitome of an adventurer. He’s everything she had ever dreamed of being as a child. HE’S A HERO. Tangled silver locks fall like moonlight kissing his cheeks. His clothes are crumpled and stained and don’t seem to fit him just right anymore. 

            Yes, he’s the hero. But it isn’t romantic or brave or even anything to envy. He’s the hero and though he is beautiful in his destruction - she would give anything to reread the story, the legends, and RIP OUT EVERY SINGLE PAGE that lead him here. To save him from the darkest depths of water in his chest that make him believe those lungs were always made for drowning. How long had she been reaching for him as he barely kept his head above water? How long would he refuse to see her?

            Oxygen enters her body once more and she offers a smile - though it doesn’t quite reach those SUMMER EYES. Turning from where she sat on the ground at his side, Kolete laces her fingers through his - careful to avert her gaze in time as she lifted the back of his hand up to her lips. They brush over the skin there and she whispers - a kiss - a promise.  

            ❝ I needed you long before I ever knew you. And I will need you long after the universe no long knows me. ❞

            Warmth BLOOMS like a garden deep within the woman’s chest, petals escaping her lungs in the form of soft laughter. ( She chooses to pay no mind to the FROSTBITE that also lives there - guilt, lies, deceit killing everything beautiful inside of her. ) Kolete turns and grins despite the ping of anxiety that threatens to claw it’s way up. ❝ Sounds like you may need to see a doctor. That can’t be healthy, ❞ she teases lightheartedly. 

            Still, despite her words, the woman has already started her way across the room to him where a hand lays gently over his chest. She meets his gaze as two fingers walk over the curves she has found there all the way up to tap the tip of the male’s nose. A gesture SHE KNEW was pushing it - but she’d get away with none-the-less. Before she could allow him to push her off or quite frankly - choose violence - Kol has already leaned against the male’s side and pressed LILY LIPS over the soft of Samatoki’s cheek. How long had they been like this ? She could hardly remember when this feeling for him started - only that he had ROOTED HIMSELF inside of her. 

                     That kindness he spoke of - he radiated it. And he was beautiful.

            Anger crashes through her hot like wax against the flame of a heart beating inside this caged bird chest. What had she expected? Praise? Him to meet her with a smile? Had she even wanted such things? Perhaps this is exactly what she wanted. A rise. A fight. To feel something other than this ache.. this.. NO ! She shakes her head as though she could erase away the thoughts that threatened to swallow her whole most days. Kolete stares back at him, unshed tears trying to spill over the shores of her cheeks like tsunamis. She would not cry. Not here, not now. Not in front of him. 

            ❝ I had to do something! They needed me! People were going to - they were going to die! ❞ The response felt hollow, even to her own ears. Shake him off, idiot. The thought was screaming loud enough to deafen her but the woman’s body didn’t so much as move. ❝ He’s not here. I am. They don’t have time to wait for a miracle. Like it or not - there’s something inside me. I was blessed - cursed, whatever with her echo. ❞ 

            She should have told him. Kolete knew that. She also knew if he had any inkling that she had gone into that battle with the intention to martyr herself - well. She wouldn’t have made it out of her quarters that morning. Meeting Thancred’s gaze evenly, she had become vaguely aware that she was trembling. From anger or from the sickness of light still poisoning her, even she wasn’t sure. Finally, crystal eyes break from his and she glances away. ❝ I’m not PROVING anything to anyone, so jot that down right now - ❞ He could see right through her. Always had been able to. Gods how she hated that about him. 

            ❝ - it doesn’t matter anyway. We have to go. I’ve spent enough time ‘healing’ in this room for a lifetime. What’ve you done with my blades? ❞
