Ancestor Veneration.

Hail and Hallowed Hunting my friends and fellow witches! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I ended up very busy the past two weeks and sick on top of it. And not sleeping. Things have been a bit hectic. But we’re getting around to having our Ancestor Veneration or Worship lesson this week. We’re gathering information now and we were curious as to what, if anything, you guys would like to know. Spirit Work: Do You Qualify?

I keep seeing people approach spirit work like it’s no big deal. They’re drawn to it through companionship, demonology, angels, contact with the dead, faerie craft, tulpamancy, servitors, thoughtforms, deity worship, etc. There’s a lot that can fall beneath spirit work or be related to it in some form where people eventually end up looking at spirit work eventually.

What is spirit work?

Spirit work is the act of working with and communicating with spirits. Spirits can range in variety from fae, mermaids, demons, angels, dragons, etc. Then there’s subspecies of whatever species you may be able to come up with off the top of your head. They can be malicious or benign, humanoid or inhumane, lifelong presence in your life or a passing existence. They can be immortal, deities, sexual or nonsexual, weak and strong. Spirits are so diverse, it’s hard to label them all as a whole because of how many different species there are and societies with their own politics and way of life. They’re incorporeal and can be found around you or in the astral, some even within your dreams. They are as real as you and me. Generally, you want to be respectful and not treat them like Pokémon to be tamed. They are wild and free. This doesn’t mean you should let them walk all over you especially when they become a negative influence in your life.

Do you need to do spirit work?

Even if a lot of the craft comes back to spirit work in some shape or form, you DO NOT have to get into spirit work. When you get into spirit work, it’s like opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. You invite one spirit into your life, twenty more will come knocking on your door. It’s perfectly possible to cohabitate with a spirit and you not even know it was there. Especially if you’re not looking for them or actively working with spirits to learn to recognize its presence. Like any other skill, there are pros and cons to spirit work. It can be rewarding just as much as it can be dangerous. It’s very dependent on you and what you plan to do while exploring spirit work. Just because they are generally incorporeal doesn’t mean you’re invincible or immune to the consequences that come with working with spirits. You’re not a god and so long as you exercise caution, spirit work can be a great skill to have. If you choose not to get into spirit work, then awesome! Your path isn’t any less than anyone else’s just because you decide this line of work is not for you.

Discernment

Before you run off into the magical land of spirits, you need to be sure that what you see or experience is real. This is the single most important tool anyone can have and that is to be skeptical, to exercise critical thinking, and test it. While it’s nice to take people at their word, you should be questioning their information and confirm it with other sources and/or with personal experience. Research and understand what it is you want to get into and what it is you’re trying to interact with. Spirits can be tricky beings and lie or change their form to appear as other things. They will try to scam you for offerings or even mess with you because they’re bored and think it’s funny. Not every spirit is going to be like this yet it happens. And being able to discern between the lies and what you deem as real will be essential in your interactions with spirits.

Divination

You want some form of physical communication with spirits that’s beyond only using telepathy or what you think you heard. Two or three different forms of divination would be ideal to check your results against and even confirm. Personally, I like to check and double check for personal assurance. I use tarot/oracle as my main form of divination and check if what I’m interpreting is correct with my pendulum. I use this a lot to confirm that what I’ve experienced happened and to gauge a spirit’s wants or needs.

Protection

How adept are you with protection? This is personal protection, wards of a space, more wards to prevent lying, glamor, teleportation, etc. Finding just the right amount of protection because there is such a thing as too much. Protection is a huge part of what you want to have around you to avoid a lot of potentially large problems before they can become one. There are preventative measure for a reason. There’s loopholes you want to avoid in the making of your wards like ‘only beings with positive intentions can come through’ or using only light as protection. The problem with the first notion is that it’s too open. A spirit with the intention to ‘fix’ you can be considered positive because this being has the intention for the highest good for you by its standards may not be the highest good by your standards. That’s a very weak premise to build a ward. The problem with the latter is that it won’t stop a being of light from just walking right through your ward. Again, it’s weak. Wards can be tricky business. The best way to build them is to write them out on paper and then try to find a way around them to break your own wards.

Banishment

If you’re going to be interacting with spirits, you want a way to banish them if they break your rules or become volatile. Why would you interact with a spirit you can’t get rid of? It’d be pretty asinine to willingly come into contact with a spirit you can’t banish and then have that spirit refuse to leave. How can you get it to stop escalating and becoming a worse situation? You want different methods of banishment as well from energetic intent to physical means of banishment. You want tailored banishment methods for the spirits you plan to contact. If you don’t know how to banish a spirit, then you probably shouldn’t be looking to interact with them.

Cleansing

Spirits can leave behind residue that can attract parasites. They can bring parasites. What you’re doing can attract more spirits or more parasites. It’s a good habit to get into to cleanse a space before and after interacting with spirits. It keeps you energetically clean as well as your space.

Energy Work

I’ve heard of people weak at sensing energies being able to do spirit work. It can be very hit and miss. Energy work is what you use to be able to sense a spirit and identify them. Personally, I recommend you have some basis in energy work before getting into spirit work. It’s an invaluable skill that’d provide an extra form of protection and open up new avenues of interacting with spirits. It’d help to learn what a spirit feels like, their energy signature, and alignments to better be able to single them out.

Astral Travel

This is a skill that’s more optional yet I always recommend having it in your skillset if you wish to get into spirit work. A lot of what you learn when getting into astral travel overlaps with spirit work since you’re opening yourself up to traveling into different realms that may have spirits. Much like spirit work, you’re opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. Astral travel provides you with a space you can work in, to be able to travel to a spirit’s homeland, observe their way of life, direct interaction, and being able to ‘see’ what the spirit may look like.

Dangers of Spirit Work

Like I’ve touched on throughout this post, there are dangers to spirit work. You’re opening yourself up to spirits and allowing yourself to interact with them. You don’t know this spirit and they likely don’t know you. They can and will mess with you if it strikes their fancy. Spirits can hurt you in creative ways, pose as a deity, pretend to be from your past life, abuse you and use you. Spirit’s personalities and motivations are as diverse as interacting with people around you. You can’t predict how a spirit will act nor how things will unfold between you by beginning interactions. All you can do is take the precautions to protect yourself, your space, and those that matter to you the best ways you can. Be cautious and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger just because you decided to see what happens. If you go out looking for danger, you’ll find it.

So I just had a thought

What if supernatural creatures don’t exist anymore? What if they did once, but through the years, they slowly mixed in with humans?

You can see the blood of fairies in the way a ballet dancer hovers in mid air before he or she hits the ground. You can see it in the way that middle school girl never forgets when someone makes her a promise. You can see it in how that one little boy in the kindergarten class seems more comfortable in the forest on that field trip than the others.

You can see the blood of dryads in hikers who never trip over roots. You can see it in that suburban grandmother never lets any of her garden die. You can see it in that one kid who climbs a tree faster than his friends, barely looking at the branches as he goes.

You can see the blood of naiads in the way a professional swimmer seems to command the water to help them. You can see it in how a cross country runner needs a water break more often than his teammates. You can see it in the way that one girl in your class always has a water bottle on her desk.

You can see the blood of mermaids in a surfer who can be tossed around underwater for a long time without drowning. You can see it in a teenage boy who doesn’t have to pretend to be unbothered by the pressure when he races his friends to the bottom of a swimming pool. You can see it in the little girl who wades into every stream she sees on a hike without quite knowing why.

You can see the blood of sirens in people who never have a problem with getting people to date them. You can see it in that soprano who can hit notes most of her fellows can only dream of. You can see it in the camp counselor who all the straight girls have a crush on, who can play guitar and sing better than any of the others.

You can see the blood of shapeshifters in the way an actor adjusts their personality to become their character with scary accuracy. You can see it in the subconscious, barely noticeable changes a tween girl’s eyes make to match her outfit better. You can see it in the way you always lose that one friend in a crowd if you’re not careful, because he’s just too good at blending in.

People who carry the blood of werewolves don’t change with the full moon anymore, but you can still see it in the way your best friend always knows something is wrong, though even they don’t know they’re smelling the changes in your body chemistry. You can see it in the way that one guy always seems to eat more than the reasonable amount of red meat at an all-you-can-eat buffet. You can see it in the way that one werido never has a problem when the teacher turns off the lights before a PowerPoint presentation because her eyes adjust quicker and better than yours.

The blood of supernatural creatures may have mostly faded away. But if you look closely, you can still see it.

Tarot Time Correspondences

✨There are a lot of different methods of interpreting tarot cards when it comes to timing so I thought I’d share mine. 

✨Suit of Wands 

The Suit of Wands is commonly associated with the element of fire. Fire burns fast so I interpret this as days.

✨Suit of Swords 

The Suit of Wands is associated with the element of air. Air flows quickly and consistently so I associate it with weeks. 

✨Suit of Cups 

The Suit of Cups is commonly associated with the element of water. Water can flow quickly or slowly, can be rough or calm and is influenced by the moon so I interpret it as months. 

✨Suit of Pentacles 

The Suit of Pentacles is associated with the element of earth. Earth is calm, nurturing and unfaltering. I associate it with years.

✨I interpret the cards of the major arcana as dependent of my own actions or the actions of the person the reading is about so the event ( or whatever I’m reading for ) will occur when I or the other person behave accordingly to that card. I do the same with the court cards but I or the other person must act on it in the timeframe suggested by the suit.

How to Use Tarot for Self Care - Major Arcana

I wanted initially to write a long article going into depth for each card and how I interpret them in a self care context but I realized that it’s too intimately tied to my life and my path to really put out there comfortably. So instead I present you a much shorter post, a rough skeleton of my Major Arcana self care system with some thoughts on how to create your own and apply it.

But first, an overview of what my system looks like.

Practical Needs

The first Major Arcana speak to needs that you can and will need to meet in this lifetime. They’re fundamental to how we relate to our families, our lovers, our communities. They’re high level needs that serve intensely practical purposes. How well we meet them naturally can be tied in part to how we were raised. We all do better with some and worse with others. 

Here are the needs I associate with the first few Major Arcana:

The Magician - Agency/Sense of Self

The High Priestess - Self Awareness

The Empress - Self Nurturing

The Emperor - Self Protection

The Hierophant - Shared Meaning/Shared Identity

The Lovers - Intimacy/Secure Attachment

The Chariot - Self Confidence

Strength - Self Worth

The Hermit - Self Reliance

The Wheel of Fortune - Limitations of the Self

  Spiritual Needs

This part of the Major Arcana represents needs that might be worked on over several lifetimes. They’re key to our spiritual well being and may or may not affect our day to day life. They’re more tied to what karma we’ve brought with us into this lifetime than how we were raised.

Here are the needs I associate with the last couple Major Arcana: 

Justice - Spiritual Sense of Self

The Hanged Man - Spiritual Self Awareness

Death - Illusion of Self

Temperance - Balancing Self and Others

The Devil – Desire and Bondage

The Tower - Destruction of the (Super)Ego

The Star – Hope and Spiritual Resilience

The Moon - Spiritual Self-Worth; Integration of the Shadow Self

The Sun - Transcendence

Judgement – Where Self Ends and Source Begins

The Fool and the World – Source, coming from it or returning to it

  Making it Your Own

These are just my associations with the cards. Everyone has a different relationship with the Major Arcana. If you’re looking to build a self care practice in conjunction with Tarot, figuring out how you interpret the Major Arcana in terms of self-development is key.

I recommend making a list of the Major Arcana and beginning to make your own notes about how it reflects your path’s journey. My path is very rooted in the cyclical nature of the universe and so I loop the journey into one that’s never complete, always returning and emerging. As every path is different, it’s not only helpful in self care but also in reflecting on and refining your path. It may take being a bit creative. For instance, perhaps folks who are more Left Hand Path aligned would find use in prioritizing the inverse meanings. You really can make it your own.

The biggest thing for me when deciding what a card indicates is if I can picture in some way what the fulfillment of that card looks like. Maybe I think of when I caught glimpses of it in other people or pieces I’ve read in fiction or nonfiction. I want to know what I’m shooting for.

I also want to have some idea of what working on that area might look like. In making your list I’d suggest jotting down one or two ways you can work on any need a card might bring up. It’s okay not to have an idea right away but it is immensely helpful once you put it into practice. My answer to a lot of these is simply meditation so they don’t have to each be different.

So with each card ask yourself: 

What need do I associate with this card?

What step on my path does this card represent? 

What does this card going well look like? 

What does this card going poorly look like? 

What activities can I use to work on it when it comes up? 

If you can answer those, or even most of those, you’ve got a very solid system for guiding self care and shadow work.

Hi! Um im not sure how to ask this pero yo soy puertoriqueña tambien y me interesa la brujeria but idk how to practice it without my very catholic family finding out. Im also really skeptical about all kinds of religion/worship so even tho witchcraft interests me, i feel really dumb even considering trying it out. Did you ever have these problems? Como bregaste?

I had a lot of issues as a newbie, and sometimes even do now too because a lot of my close friends are Christian. 😂 I just keep that part away from them.

You can always look up the synchronization of the spirits and the catholic saints. In Santeria and especially in Puerto Rico, the Orisha and Santos are synchronized for this exact reason. For example, many people pray to Oshun as La Caridad del Cobre. Or Yemaya as la Virgen de Regla. I started off with my ancestors, I do recommend that always be your starting point as they will have your back in this world and the spirit world. I had pictures hanging up and I’d place a glass of water for them, say my rosaries for them daily. A lot of catholic ritual has to do with things like this anyway so it’s really not a far stretch. Research and reading are the most important thing, soon you’ll see what you feel is best for you to work with. Trust your gut and research as much as you can about folk Catholicism or Saint synchronization. Love and light hun! You’ll def find your place soon.
