okay so i have so many thoughts on this au that i've just been slowly melting all day so i'm gonna talk about it finally

akuatsu "Ballet On The Battlefield" AU

Akutagawa plays the role of the highly trained ballet dancer who his family depends on. he can only survive by being the best under the rule of his strict instructor, Chuuya who was once the best in the field before his leg injury.

Chuuya gets roped into using his highly sought-after ballet as a scheme for the assasination of another nation's leader, Fyodor. The one who puts this plot into motion is dazai, a long time dubious "friend" of Chuuya's, he convinces him to send his diciples to perform a ballet for Fyodor, using Akutagawa to execute Fydor during the performance. He can only comply.

Atsushi is a poor janitor's son, he finds the dance fascinating and gets closer to Akutagawa as they share their struggles "i knew my parents loved me when they would leave extra dust for me" and "this is all i have known in life, there is nothing else for me to be" you get it they're still sad little children who secretly dance on the couryard under the moonlight.

but once during their meeting they get found out by dazai, who drags Akutagawa away and punishes him for not spending his every waking moment practising.

by Atsushi's words, Akutagawa starts to doubt the assasins role he has been given, and at the last moment of the ballet infront of the other country's leader, he misses Fyodor and the hit lands on his advisor instead, on Nikolai Bluabbbbsb (<what'shisname) leaving Akutagawa to run away in the chaos, fleeing with the other performers and avoiding dazai whose plan he foiled.

when he arrives back home he goes straight for Atsushi, they would need to leave town immediately. but they come across Chuuya, he feigns distate for them, for failing the assasination plot and for running away, he says not to return here again, but that was already their plan?? he says he would not detain them, he flicks his wrist and says to get as far away from his sight as possible.

And so Atsushi and Akutagawa leave, under the moonlight, in the middle of a war, both uncertain, to find a place for the two of them.

This got to me because just imagine Akutagawa mid-performance with his Atsushi hallucinations telling him not to kill, like !!!

We all know that the red dwarf can only sustain one hologram.

And considering that you need a whole disc to store the persons full personality, and a whole projection suite just for the one person...

What if, when a hologram leaves the dwarf, they become lower quality, less themselves. The light bee probably cant hold that much data.

It's ok for Rimmers death day party, given that they return to the dwarf soon enough.

But when they've been searching for the dwarf for months, stuck on Starbug? Things start becoming noticeable.

Rimmer doesn't remember any of the space core directives. More than that, he doesnt know that he doesnt know. His processer simply generates a random number to compensate.

His idiosyncrasies become more pronounced. He's more cowardly, more proud, more arrogant. He repeats the same phrases, and at first it seems like it's only Rimmer being Rimmer.

But as the whole of Rimmer's personality is far away, and as the weeks on Sarbug turn to months... the crew start to notice as Rimmer starts repeating himself. Gradually running out of material.

Perhaps that fuels their search. Rimmer isn't himself, not wholly, without the dwarf. Even Cat decides that it isnt the same to insult Rimmer when he isn't in his right head.

And Rimmer wouldn't even know this. Wpuldnt have any way to comprehend it. But Lister knows that he's not the same.
