Little (horrible) thought I just had:

If snufkin died during the winter, probably there would be no way of moomintroll knowing and he’d just think that his best friend no longer wanted to come back to the valley, that snufkin had just… moved on to another place to adventure.

i dont like little my’s characterization in 2019 moomin :( ive only seen about 5 eps of this one but she seems so cruel. in 90s moomin i felt like she was firey and oftentimes selfish but ultimately a caring, companionable person. 2019 little my is like, a demon. i thought 90s little my was chaotic evil, but 2019 little my is Really chaotic and evil.

i know lots of ppl love her, she’s just rubbing me the wrong way. when someone is genuinely trying their best to do something and someone else sabotages them for no reason other than to make them upset and try to make them fail, it hurts me! it’s always like, oh, little my is doing these things to make moomin a better person, but it doesn’t make me feel any better about it, it just feels like bullying

moomin trivia I have been pushing to the back of my mind for a long time because I literally just can’t handle it:

this authorized tove jansson biography claiming moomin and snufkin have a kiss scene in the 1949 stage play version of comet in moominland, written by tove and directed by vivica bandler. I’m not really sure how else to interpret this since they’re the ONLY characters in this scene. my only explanation against it is that maybe it’s just a major mistranslation, but it seems very unlikely with how straightforward it is and there’s very little info about this play online

Episode 2 of moominvalley named “The Spring Tune”is a strong episode when it comes to understanding who snufkin is as character

I’m impressed that one episodes speaks a lot about him.

Quick warning, this is just me analyzing some shit and telling you how I feel, I have no specific target or conclusion I am aiming for. 

LETS GET TO IT

Now I will be talking about Snufkin like its the first time I ever met him.  

In this episode we are introduced to Snufkin, I really love this episode because it tells a whole fucking lot about him. Who he is as a character, his likes, dislikes and even his “fear”

So the episode starts with moominmama packing food for moomintrool because he was going to spend they day waiting for this “special” person that was slightly mentioned at the end of episode one, “Snufkin”

Moomintroll seams to be in a big time rush. Who could be so special for moomintroll to be so in a rush???

then the music intro comes, skip skip…

Here we see Snufkin, his face is covered. He is “listening to the sound of nature” then he pulls up his good old trusty harmonica that at this point everybody know that Snufkin and his harmonica are one, Now hold on to this point I will come back to it because something interesting happened later on with his  harmonica.

He is trying to compose a song with the sound of nature

But when he was about to do so he says “Oh its no good” and walks away, oof. ya got artist block, I can relate

“its not ready yet, and neither am I, to come back yet I mean” Snufkin says to “moomintroll” who ends up being just… his imagination talking to him

What I find very cute and interesting is that Snufkin got this “imaginary moomintrool” so spot on, I THOUGHT this was the real moomin.

Its nice to see that Snufkin knows his friend so well he makes an imaginary version of him that acts EXACTLY LIKE HIM. This scene also shows how much Snufkin DOES miss moomin, to the point he did… this! 

The imaginary moomin also made a sad face when Snufkin said he can’t come back, not yet. Snufkin KNOWS moomin is sad, and he KNOWS he wants him back.

he is still trying to make a song o h my god

note that Snufkin did not come back to moominvalley because he did not make a new song for summer give him time he is working on it-

While Snufkin is trying to come up with a tune for his song we are shown this little baby that is standing right there behind the tree.

Now he goes on telling Snufkin that he knew him from all the tales everybody told him, his adventures and all that good stuff. The exact scene (not the scene itself but the idea) from the classic 1990 moomins, episode 24 “hurry up Snufkin”

Snufkin, being the anti social angry wanna-be-alone boy he is, tries to avoid him as much as he can. At some point he almost made this new creature cry, ok good job Snufkin.

In guilt he asks “whats your name?”

In reply he says “oh i’m so small i haven’t got a name” The he gets all excited because Snufkin asked for his name while no one else did, pretty sad if you ask me :/

He starts to talk again, classy. Then he asks Snufkin, if not offensive and not so much trouble, to give him a name.

At this point he is scaring the fuck out of Snufkin oh god

He trips, gets stuck on a tree trunk or whatever that was, gets super angry (never again Snufkin please baby) and storms away.

Another thing no name asked asked Snufkin if he would go back to moominvalley to see moomintroll, Snufkin reply’s angrily “I’LL GO WHEN I WANT, MAYBE I WON’T GO AT ALL”

No name gets sad, a little guilty, and walks away. Before he gets far Snufkin asks about the name.

the name he gave him was “ Teety-woo “

“a light beginning, but with a little sadness to round it off” Snufkin says.

“its nice and happy to start with, and then a little sadness” 1990 Snufkin says.

this scene in 1990 is a lot softer in my opinion (watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd_8u6YD9qA)

Snufkin offers to play his harmonica to Teety-woo but when he went out of his tent he was gone. The expression left on Snufkins face tells a lot of things, especially the fact that he screwed up.

“Teety-woo?”

Now ladies and gentlemen, The next couple scenes are the reason why I wanted to make this post so stick along folks.

Snufkin being Snufkin went to look for Teety-woo, if he is panicking so much then something must be on his mind, well at least that was what I thought 

Snufkin goes back to his tent, curled up in his blanket feeling sad.

He says “I feel so alone, I must be ill”

This struck so so many questions to me. Why now do you feel alone? What makes you feel alone? Why do you believe you are “ill” just because you are alone?

its just an overall sad scene :(

Snufkin falls asleep to be woken up by a cold breeze and a chunk of snow falling onto him, the claims that he has to continue his travel now. So he does so, he gets up and walks away.

He hears a noise, a bird maybe, then his pace increases, by this point he was running.

he breaks free and starts to move once again. He trips on a branch and his harmonica falls out (here comes the harmonica again :’’))) Like any normal living creature he goes to pick it up, but a dick for brain owl decides HEY LETS STEAL IT and off he goes with he harmonica, good bye baby :’’’’’)))))

Snufkin COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that THIS BITCH STOLE HIS HARMONICA I AM OFFENDED, he goes on with his journey

As I said before, Snufkin and his harmonica are ONE, If you watched moomin, 1990, Snufkin always had his harmonica all the time.

His harmonica is a form of escapism, something he plays to calm him down or just for fun. He abandons something SO important to him to go see his best friend, moomintroll. I find it both interesting and thoughtful for Snufkin to abandon his harmonica, that must have been a hard decisions to make.

Successfully he reaches moomintrolls house

He reached the bridge, passes a porky pine (i think that was it) and turns around to hear a sudden echo 

“It’s no use, no one will remember you here. You’ve been gone too long Snufkin”

Don’t like the sound of that, I don’t either :/

He runs toward momins house screaming his name, hopping he would stick his head out and welcome him

no response.

He climbs up the latter to check out what the fuck is happening.

What he sees is very unpleasant for him. It breaks his heart. it breaks MY HEART

He was replaced.

he was so surprised he let go, and fell.

If ya didn’t notice that all this time he was having a nightmare, ya stupid jk jk

Teety-woo being a precious baby offers Snufkin some “food” (yes its worm)

Now before I step forward I want talk about Snufkins dream. Remember when I said we learn about his fear. Well here you go. Snufkin is afraid of being replaced. He knows he has been away for longer than usual. Spring arrived and he hasn’t reached moominvalley just yet. He is afraid that if he takes too long moomintroll will forget/ leave him. Another approach is that Snufkin is afraid that one day moomin will get tired of waiting for Snufkin to come back so he leaved him. 

Thats really sad if you ask me, but we all have these type of thought once in a while.

After Teety-woo gives him the worm Snufkin asks if he has ever been to moominvalley. Teety-woo answers with a no as he is “too busy to go there”

He continues rambling about him being busy and all the good stuff.

Snufkin was happy to see that Teety-woo is okay and that he is not mad at him. (also he is happy that he did not steal his friend). Teety-woo asks him what he will do next (also commenting that he screams a lot when he sleeps, I find that one funny honestly)

Snufkin decides to go back to moominvalley to see moomintroll. “as a matter of fact, I really want to see him.”

Snufkin being Snufkin pulls out his harmonica and asks Teety-woo if he wants to hear a song. Personally I was expecting a yes probably because in the 1990 version he does play a song. But he says no because as I said before, he is busy. 

“you need a little time to yourself” Snufkin says. 

If you ever watched the other episodes you would know that Snufkin says that line many times telling us a lot about the character we are dealing with.

I’m just going to quote what snufkin says in the end because you have to hear it for yourself.

“now then, about this spring tune. Something new, one part expectation, two part spring sadness. And for the rest, just the great delight of walking alone and liking it”

Somehow he was able to summaries his WHOLE adventure in two sentences. What a legend and a lovable character.
