Here's the video version of my discussion of the leaked emails that prove the Hugo Awards removed finalists (me, RF Kuang, Paul Weimer, Neil Gaiman & Ep 6 of Sandman) for political reasons, despite us having the required votes. Because too many of you are making assumptions without bothering to read the full exposé.

There's a lot of nuance in this case that I hope people can acknowledge. No, it is not "sinophobic" to criticize the Chinese government's severe censorship policies when anyone who's spent more than ten minutes on the Chinese internet knows how bad it is, and there IS evidence of pressure in this case. There's nothing to accomplish by pretending like it's not a thing. You're not furthering the world proletarian revolution by speaking over the lived experiences of Chinese comrades and denying factually shitty aspects of your favorite AES.

Yes, the Western and presumably white members of the Hugo admin team DID circle back to racism by trying so hard to appease the Chinese government that they preemptively censored Chinese diaspora ~ to be safe ~ on extremely flimsy reasons without even reading our books. And of course, confusing Nepal for Tibet.

It's really not one or the other.

I just realized something really heinous about the Spotify announcement.

So, they gave us exactly 30 days' notice to withdraw our work from the new ToS agreement.

Except it can take up to 30 days for them to process that request.

So, if you didn't do it yesterday when it was announced, your work will remain up past the 30-day limit and be considered acceptance of the new ToS.

...

That's evil. And the thing is, they know we don't have anywhere else to go. Even Author's Republic requires me to sign a ToS with Findaway/Spotify (Spotify bought Findaway) to maintain library access.

Started playing more with collage style, taking images from the only magazine I'm still physically receiving (aka an ad lol) and utilizing some pages from a ephemera book that I'd normally be too anxious to use. My theme for this year artistically is "use the damn thing". I'm terrible at hoarding resources that I love but am afraid to use because they're "too nice" or I want to "save" them for something that never ends up materializing. Just use the damn thing!

it honestly is incredibly refreshing to talk about ofmd with non-fandom people sometimes. somehow got on the topic of Izzy while talking to my husband and i mentioned the drama and discourse around his death. he looked like one big question mark and just said:

"but it made perfect sense? his arc was complete and his death makes space for new things to come"

now bear in mind that this is a man who 1) has watched season 2 only once as it came out, 2) isn't big on media analysis in general and mostly watches marvel and star wars stuff for casual enjoyment, and 3) enjoyed Izzy's arc in s2 (so much that i suspect it was his favorite part of the season, definitely what he commented on the most) and teared up when he died

and he fucking nailed it

he was also very confused there was discourse at all because "but it's so obvious?!"

i just felt this immense relief that yes, it really is obvious and makes sense to the casual viewer who hasn't marinated their brain in meta and fic for 18 months
