I started this series kinda on a whim and somehow managed to stay on schedule so far this year! 6 months and 6 Nature Walk cross stitch patterns, in order of pictured: Midafternoon, Golden Hour, Teatime, Petrichor, Twilight, and Midnight.

Cross-stitch artists of Tumblr-- let's make a difference!

Cross Stitch for Gaza is assembling a pattern bundle fundraiser: cross-stitch designers of any skill level are invited to submit a pattern of theirs (old or new) to be included in the pattern bundle. Once the bundle is complete, it will be offered as a reward to stitchers who make a donation of €15 or more to the GoFundMe of Hadeel Mikki and her family.

Our Goal

This pattern bundle is being assembled (by @mathysphere and friends) to help raise money for Hadeel Mikki and her family-- her mother, husband, two brothers, her two little girls, and her baby-- to escape and find safety out of Gaza. Their goal is to raise a total of €35,000 to pay for passage; as of this writing, they have already raised €20,000, so the aim of this campaign is to help raise the final €15,000. Plus, hopefully, a little extra, so that they will have something to live on once they cross over into Egypt.

If this fundraiser is successful at raising the money that Hadeel's family needs, then later donors may be directed to help with a campaign from another family. In that case, a family or individual will be chosen from the GazaVetter's list of verified campaigns.

The Bundle

For this fundraiser, we are collecting cross-stitch patterns to send as a bundle (one or more .ZIP files) to anyone who donates €15 or more to Hadeel Mikki's GoFundMe campaign during the duration of the campaign (March 7th to April 25th, 2025). Anyone who can make a cross-stitch pattern may 'donate' it to the cause-- you do not have to be an established or a professional pattern designer to contribute!

Once the fundraising event goes live, donors will be directed to give €15 or more to the GoFundMe campaign, and then submit a receipt or screenshot of their donation to the Cross Stitch for Gaza team. Within 24 hours, they will be sent back a .ZIP file or files containing the full set of patterns from the bundle. No money will be exchanged with the Cross Stitch for Gaza team at any point.

Each of the pattern-makers will also receive a copy of the full pattern bundle, as a thank-you. 🙏

The Tumblr cross-stitch community is not a large one, and not a rich one, but it doesn't have to be-- if we work together, we have the power to make a real difference for a family that desperately needs it.

Hiya :] I'm not sure if you've ever spoken about this, but what's your process like when designing your patterns? I've been wanting to start designing my own patterns, and your compositions are really inspiring!! Are there any tips or resources you can share?

So normally, I sketch ideas I have so I don't forget them and use that as a jumping off point. Then I usually start in a pixel art program on my tablet and transfer that into WinStitch (a cross stitch design program) to finalize everything. The design usually stays the same while test stitching, but I might swap out colors or fine-tune a bit.

I don't have any specific resources for composition, it's mostly based on vibes tbh! It's a lot of arranging and rearranging until it looks "right". I usually start with my biggest elements and then fill in from there.

For tips, I'd say look at tons of art/inspiration in all places/media, design the stuff that *you* would want to make, practice practice practice, and don't be afraid to try new things!! My style and patterns are pretty different from when I first started designing and I'm sure they'll further evolve as I continue.

Cross-Stitch Pattern of the Year 2024

Seen a cool pattern lately? It's time to share it with the class!

Submissions are OPEN for the Cross Stitch Pattern of the Year tournament: a chance to look at some cool embroidery and admire patterns from the present-- and the past!

One pattern per person, please

And that's the only rule!

Specifically: the Pattern of the Year does NOT have to be one that was released/stitched/worked on in 2024-- any pattern from any year is eligible for Pattern of the Year 2024. So send in something cool, or funny, or beautiful, and we'll have some fun!

Submissions close at 11:59pm on December 3rd. If there are too many patterns submitted (unlikely), I'll throw them in a blender and select a random mix (enough to make some kinda power of 2). If there are too few, remaining slots will be filled with random patterns from the Cyberstitchers.com Pattern Directory.

The tournament will begin on either December 4th or 5th.

This sampler took me so long to design but I'm so happy with where it ended up! Graveyard Guardian, featuring a large Church grim and lots of cemetery motifs.

Hello! Sorry if this is a silly question you've already answered somewhere, but I gotta ask! Do you dye the fabric yourself? The only colored aida fabric I can find is red, black or turquoise. I am obsessed with the color composition of your art and how the canvas itself adds to it!

Thank you and not silly at all! I don't dye myself, but the majority of my fabrics are by hand dyers! I always put the fabric I used in my Etsy listings but you can also ask here if you'd like to know a specific fabric! (it can be sometimes hard to find on Etsy as they're always moving the descriptions around)

I use a lot of fabric from BeStitchMe, Picture This Plus, and Fiber on a Whim, all of which dye on lots of different fabric bases.

I mostly use linen, jobelan, or lugana, but there are some awesome dyers who only do aida, like Witch's Garden Crafts, The Stitchy Ferret, and Oblong Meow.

I know lots of folks will dye their own fabric for fun with the ice dyeing technique, which is pretty forgiving and a lot of fun! I've tried it a couple times with some smaller pieces of white aida and it turned out pretty cool! You just need some fabric or floss (usually white), powder dye, a container, and lots of ice! (and probably gloves too). This can be a great technique to use on thrifted fabric that might be a bit stained anyway to give it new life! (just be careful not to wash it again unless you set the dye or the colors might run)
