I really like the idea that a big reason why Iroh seems to resent Azula in Book 2 is not because she’s different from him, but because of how similar they are.

I think Iroh was likely very similar in terms of his ambition and dedication to serving his father in his Dragon of the West days, and it probably disturbs him to see those traits in Azula. It’s a reflection of his former self that he’s trying to run away from.

Meanwhile I honestly don’t think Iroh and Zuko have a lot in common personality wise. I think Iroh is attached to Zuko because he’s afraid of failing him like he believes he failed Lu Ten. After Lu Ten’s death, Iroh’s ambition shifts to fixing his past mistakes and one aspect is saving Zuko like he couldn’t save his own son.

Not getting my hopes up that the comics will actually explore this, but I think detangling this complicated dynamic between these three characters would be important in Azula’s journey towards healing.

I feel like this is a lot of the "Azula redemption arcs" I've seen in fanfic. Which... is interesting to say the least. I think in part it comes from difficulty imagining what she could be like without her cruelty.

I'm all for Azula redemption, but it isn't really redemption if she's hanging around the Gaang now saying things like, "Oh Zuzu, you don't have to get so touchy about the time I fried you. Always so dramatic." That's not really understanding or acknowledging harm.

Also, frankly, it stresses me out. The idea of hanging out with someone who's just callous about your feelings and physical pain and unapologetic about the harm she's caused... That misunderstands what it means to have a redemption arc.

You can feel kindness and remorse without requiring a whole personality transplant. It doesn't betray Azula's personhood to write her that way.

My current Homestuck hot take is more people need to like Kanaya and actually think about her and until then you need to stop writing her. Girl who has so much going on but gets reduced to Rose's wife, passive observer, or hot violent alien girl. I need a special Bechdel test. Can you write Kanaya doing something totally on her own away from Rose while talking to someone without mentioning Rose. You can substitute romantic interest in for Rose if you write her with someone else.
