People who insist tumblr must be 90% LGBT because their self-curated dash is have never gotten a weird comment on a post and went to check the person's blog and discovered an entire deep subculture of christian and tradwife users reblogging anti-abortion quotes and transphobia between each other. I promise you they're on here.

When you read the news and it says “600 injured in Israeli airstrikes” I hope everyone understands how serious these injuries are. Today, I saw a 5 year old child with half of his face gone laying on a hospital floor, alive. I saw part of his brain where his right eye used to be. Many of these injuries are not survivable, especially without medications, antibiotics, working surgery rooms, medical tools, clean water, nutrients, etc. People who do survive their injuries are left disabled for the rest of their lives.

I’m curious as to what this blog’s thoughts are on the new Avatar: Seven Havens series. I’ve been looking at the poster but I have a hard time placing what culture of the clothing that the two main characters are wearing could potentially be inspired by.
To be honest, I don't think the clothing is inspired by any particular culture. It's just sort of vaguely futuristic, unfortunately.
This is just pure conjecture, but I get the impression that Bryke wants to distance the Avatar world's setting from the Asian culture/history that inspired the original series. The characters are still obviously Asian-coded through their names and physical appearance, but everything else we're seeing (clothing, architecture, etc.) is pretty much just generic sci-fi.
They were already going in that direction with Korra; most of Republic City is inspired by 1920s New York, rather than Asian cities like Shanghai or Hong Kong. With Seven Havens, it seems they've fully untethered the setting from Asia.
I have another post that goes in-depth into the subject, but Bryke originally imagined Avatar as a sci-fi show. This is why the story begins with Aang basically awakening from a cryogenic sleep after 100 years and finding himself in a dystopic future. However, there were three big pop culture trends in the early 2000s that led to the development of Avatar's unique world:
High Fantasy: Both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings came out in 2001, and both were huge box office successes. This led to an increased demand for fantasy stories set in mostly pre-industrial worlds.
Martial Arts Films: Chinese martial arts movies were getting released to theatres nationwide in the US and doing very well in the box office. Examples include Hero (2002), House of Flying Daggers (2004), and the Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). Jackie Chan's US movies like Rush Hour 1 & 2 and Shanghai Noon were also very successful.
Chinese-Inspired US Cartoons: Running parallel to the martial arts movie trend of the 2000s were a good number of Chinese-inspired children's cartoons. Off the top of my head, there was Jackie Chan Adventures (2000), Sagwa the Chinese Siamese Cat (2001), and Xiaolin Showdown (2003). I'm guessing the success of Disney's Mulan (1998) also helped to jumpstart this trend.
As the latter two trends aren't really around anymore, there isn't much impetus to stick too closely to the Asian inspiration of the original show. It also doesn't help that US-China relations are currently very strained.
It also puts into context why the Seven Havens' setting appears to be a futuristic wasteland, considering one of the biggest movie franchises out right now is Dune (2021).
#atla#interesting#not sure what to think of this yet#i'm not ready for korra & co. being dead or nearly dead#but i guess it's time?#we'll see...
