"Academic language isn't accessible!!" Right. Not at first. When I entered my masters degree, the amount of time I spent weeping because I couldn't parse through the language of the articles I was required to read and write about was....high. Very high. Like couple times a day/every time I tried to tackle the homework hard.

I had a public school education in the northern midwest. I went to undergrad for video editing (not a lot of writing/research classes). I had somehow managed not to write a single research paper in my life until my masters degree. B and C student. I am going to most likely graduate as one of the top students.

The trick is - allow yourself to be bad at something, and get better at it. If you don't understand something, send the paragraph to your friend and say I have no idea what the fuck this says. Look up words, research other papers on the topic you're reading. Dig into sources cited to understand what the author parsed from what THEY read. What you'll find is that "academic" language becomes easier and easier.

But what's even MORE important is that you've taught yourself research skills, and you've fostered your curiosity.

I get it, I went to public school -- they didn't foster curiosity, and they definitely didn't make it easy to learn skills in a supportive environment. But your education, and what you gain from it, is on you. It's on us to be curious about the world, to always want to know more. And education is not a individualist activity -- reach out to friends, to experts, to people who know more than you and allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to say 'I need this explained another way so I understand'.
