characters apologizing for things they have no control over. mumbling sorry while losing consciousness. feeling ashamed of a bleeding wound. embarrassed when an infection sets in. deep seated feverish guilt when they need to be carried, when their legs won't keep them upright anymore and they lean heavy on a friend, slurring apologies..........

on behalf of mermay, my take on it:

viktor is a human scientist working in a government facility alongside dr. reveck (singed) who wants to find cures for various diseases/illnesses among other things

one day, singed tells him about a "promising new asset" and he shows viktor a massive tank that is holding said asset. which turns out to be a species of mammalian merfolk that resembles orcas/pilot whales. and that is jayce.

and singed says that jayce's species may hold the last crucial ingredient to finding a "cure for death". which basically just means that he wants to start cutting pieces off of jayce to study his body's properties and whether it can be used to create said cure. like in the show, a major part of his motivations is to find a cure for his dying daughter and he doesn't care if he has to carve up or hurt other living creatures in order to achieve that.

while viktor has more reservations about some of singed's practices...

and he tasks viktor with looking after the asset, and viktor (being the bold guy that he is) actually gets closer to the huge merman than singed recommended. and manages to kind of befriend jayce even with the obvious language barrier.

jayce isn't too happy about being locked up in a cramped tank (and kind of being fed the wrong kind of fish), but he is curious about the humans and the weird stuff they have going on (being science). at least, he thinks that viktor is much nicer than some of the other humans.

jayce mostly communicates through a series of clicks and vocalizations akin to whales that can't really be translated into human words. he also can create whalesongs, and he has one that is unique to him kind of like how dolphins will have a vocalization unique to them, which is their name that other dolphins use to identify them with.

but eventually, after some trial and error, viktor is able to kind of understand jayce better, like identify certain sounds that jayce makes (which is his species's language) and body language from him in order to interpret what he is trying to tell him.

Dr. Viktor Jaskólka

one of the scientists working at the governmental facility. kind of an assistant to dr. reveck in that he is the one who often helps the doctor with his experiments and handling of his subjects.

in his mid 30s.

czech/polish heritage.

walks with a cane and does wear a leg brace and back brace. has to be careful around the water tanks so his cane doesn't slip on the water.

has a cat named rio that he adopted from a shelter. she is like a cat that has lived on a boat her whole life and isn't scared of the water.

cat rio is named after a past lab subject that viktor was once attached to, before she died during one of dr. reveck's experiments on her. that event greatly shifted viktor's outlook on dr. reveck and made him advocate more for the safety and well-being of the other lab subjects.

partially hates his job (and his superiors), but won't quit it either because he's come too far to just back out now.

kind of knows that interacting with the huge merperson is a bit dangerous, but curiosity and basic self-preservation had a fight and curiosity won. luckily, he wasn't torn to shreds like what dr. reveck said might happen if he got too close to the asset.

goes out of his way to get the right kind of food for jayce, and is the one who is actually making sure that jayce doesn't wither away in his containment tank.

is researching jayce's physiology and making theories about his species, since jayce and his kind are a new discovery for marine science. to an extent.

Jayce, “The Asset”

the newest addition to dr. reveck’s collection of lab subjects.

mammalian species of merfolk. related to orcas and pilot whales.

he is around the size of a young adult male orca. between 19 to 22 feet in length. he is still young for his age (like in his late 20s to early 30s for his kind).

obligate carnivore. he primarily eats fish such as bluefin tuna and sharks, but he will also eat seals whenever he travels to colder waters or places that have an abundance of them.

not a man-eater, but that doesn't mean he can't be...

typically his kind will stay in the deeper, open seas away from any human contact, but jayce got way too curious and thus he was discovered and caught.

like other cetaceans, he doesn’t have a nose like other mammals do. he has a blowhole on his back. he needs to breathe air since he doesn’t have gills or else he’ll die from lack of oxygen.

has a pair of hands and arms to interact with his environment. he does have large webs between his fingers and curved very sharp claws on each finger.

doesn’t really understand human speech, but he is very intelligent so he can understand intentions and other methods of communication like gestures, vocal tone, and body language.

has lost weight and is not as healthy as he was when he first arrived. this is due to the humans at the facility giving him either an insufficient amount of food to purposely keep him weak, and from him not wanting to eat the small fish they give him. mostly because the fish isn’t the type that he usually eats.

his blood is a dark red that sometimes appears to be the color of red that almost appears black, but it does seem to have some kind of healing component to it that dr. reveck is currently trying to study and utilize.

has gained various new wounds on his body from where dr. reveck as cut into him to collect tissue/muscle/blood samples. though, these wounds seem to be healing very slowly but surely.

Whumpee being forced to their knees in front of Whumper and/or their team

Pushing Whumpee's head down to make them stare at the floor and keeping them in the uncomfortable slumped posture

Whumpee being hauled to their feet by a grip on their upper arm, maybe causing bruising

A hand on the back of Whumpee's neck to force them down, either to the ground or over a surface like a table in order to wrestle them into cuffs

Dragging Whumpee back by the ankle when they try to crawl away from Whumper

Shoving a handcuffed Whumpee forward impatiently

Whumper surprising Whumpee and grabbing them from behind, an arm wrapping around their neck or a hand covering their mouth to keep them quiet

Jayce seems like one of those dogs who still thinks their the size of a puppy, like he hasn’t realized that he’s like 6’2 and a little less than 200 pounds, so he’ll try to sit in Viktor’s lap and be very confused when Viktor says he’s crushing him.

Jayvik x vita carnis

Viktor is a mimic that's eaten enough people to now look human. Jayce is very unobservant and assumes he just walks bad (due to the weird length limbs they get).

Jayce ends up dating a mimic without realizing it.

The mimic (Viktor) gets possessive over him, "that's my human, you can't eat him. "

One day a mimic is hiding in Jayce's apartment, Viktor is over with him. When the mimic comes out hours later to eat Jayce, Viktor kills it instead (in vita carnis it's a power dynamic thing. You have regular mimic, human looking mimic, then elder mimic, each one increasing in strength).

Jayce is like "woah, my boyfriend just killed a mimic" cause he's socially dumb as rocks

Jayce brings Viktor to meet his mother who immediately clocked on to how Viktor was a mimic. She's deathly afraid of him the whole time he's there, she doesn't sleep, she carries a knife around and Jayce has no idea why. He asks his mother if the news reported a mimic in the area with Viktor standing directly next to him.

(I'm gonna expand on this later, I want to finish my Cthulhu idea first)
