The Scary Truth About Data Scraping
Data Scraping is technique used by individuals that want togather large amounts of data, harvest it, and export the entire data collected into third party applications such as Microsoft Excel. The information gathered can be very widespread from tracking people’s online activity and harvesting personal data and also conversations from social media pages to other online activity. Data scraping is not limited to just targeting individuals and their personal information. One could also be gathering information from company websites and harvesting all relevant data.
Data scraping might seem illegal and unethical, but it is only unethical. The scary thing is that technically anyone with data scraping software can harvest any information they please. No consent is needed from the website owner to scrap data from their website. The website may state in their terms and conditions on what you can and can’t do on the website, with regards to data scraping and other techniques that are similar to data scraping. But no legal actions can take place, as data scraping is allowed under the law.
The way I perceive data scraping is an invasion of privacy, even if the information is publicly available. In no way, shape or form should data scraping be acceptable for any use, whether it’s for personal, business or selling the information gathered to marketers.

Social Media Dashboard
Do you ever feel disorganized with all your social media profiles? What if you could manage all your accounts in one place. Well, you can with SMMS (Social Media Management System), otherwise known as dashboards.
The following are 3 dashboards that you might want to consider for your business and/or personal social media activity.
Hootsuite
Tumblr media
The leading social media dashboard to manage and measure your social networks
Features & Benefits
If you have Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus, you can easily sign up for a free Hootsuite account. If you’re not comfortable signing up with one of these social media platforms, Hootsuite also allows you to sign up with your email.
Once you’ve signed up, Hootsuite offers different plans that an individual or business/corporation use to sync all their social media platforms with Hootsuite. Hootsuite will also organize all your different social media profiles into different columns, and under each column you can add streams. Streams are essential, one’s activity on its social media profile. For example, if you sync your Tweeter account, you can add streams such as Home Page, Sent Tweets, Retweets, Mentions and so forth. You will then be able to see all your different streams in an organized way. Streams are not limited to just Twitter, any social media network that you add offers different streams for that particular network.
When developing a post, Hootsuite gives you options like attach image or file, shrinkage URL link, add location and save message as template.
When ready to post, you can pick what profiles you want to post your message to. You can pick just Twitter, or you can pick all your social media profiles. All depending on the message and who you want to see it.
Hootsuite also offers the ability to schedule Tweets, Facebook posts, and other social media posts/messages in advance. One would do this if they knew they’ll be away/offline and won’t have the ability to tweet or share relevant information with their followers.
For those using Hootsuite for business, Hootsuite provides the ability to add team members to your business’s Hootsuite account. Team members are the people that you authorize to use Hootsuite on your organization's behalf, allowing you to assign tasks to these individuals. Without authorization, individuals won’t be granted access to the company’s social media profiles on Hootsuite’s dashboard.
Hootsuite provides analytical reports for all Hootsuite users. Depending on the plan your Hootsuite account is on, your analytical report will be more detailed if you have the enterprise plan. Analytics reports allow you to track the performance of your social media campaigns at an in-depth level.

Would YOU Share the Link?
I believe that companies should approach online marketing endeavors from both social media and SEO platforms. Companies would then benefit by having a direct means by which consumers could learn more about their products, yet also reach out to potential customers by sharing information with individuals interactively.
My personal opinion rests in the undeniable fact that social media is a crafty and intelligent way of marketing and that it is somewhat ‘new age advertising.’ I stand strongly behind this assertion due to two different points Mitchell Harper brought up in his article entitled, “Social Media versus SEO.”
The first point states that people are more inclined to click on a link that a known or closely regarded friend shared or tweeted, rather than clicking on a link posted by the company/agency. This kind of behaviour is innate in humans; it is the behaviour social media constructs have capitalized on and is what makes them so popular. People want to be in the know – they want to see, have and be aware of what other people possess and are interested in. If a friend shares a global trend, you are more likely to want to share it as well. At the end of the day, the shared link has gained an increased amount of e-commerce traffic.
The second point that I really connected with was when Mitchell said, “an Internet search is like a scope on a hunting rifle,” and “social media are like shots in a shotgun: if you scatter pellets everywhere, you’re bound to hit something.” It’s fascinating in the sense that the shotgun scenario creates an instant ripple effect, while the hunting rifle’s scope relies on others to allow it to make an impact. I’m not suggesting that SEO is unimportant when it comes to sourcing e-commerce traffic, because it is. People these days, however, tend to need guidance and baiting in order to want to learn more about products/services being advertised, and help attract more attention to company/agency websites. People will need to be able to find main sources without having to think of searching them on their own, and ranking high on the SEO list is important. Therefore, tagging social media posts will help boost standings, Thus making it easier for potential consumers to go straight to the source.
If you would like to learn more about social media and search engine optimization, here is the link to the original article by Mitchell Harper:
