I should add that IMLS provides massive, nationwide funding and support for ILL or Inter-library Loan services. Here's a quick breakdown: Each library building has a collection which includes all material that can be checked out at that library location. If a library is part of a library system (two or more library buildings under the same name) it can circulate the collection to other libraries in the same system. The library*system* will usually budget for this cost to physically move materials. However, it is impossible for one single library building or system to purchase, house, and preserve every single book, magazine, newspaper, CD, DVD, Blu-ray, record, etc. in every global language ever created. Inter-library Loan allows patrons of one library to request materials from library collections outside of their own library or library system to which they would not otherwise have access..
The catch is, ILL can be expensive-- staff at both the requesting library and the sending library need to process the requested item, often using ILL specific software and/or other special ticketing. The material has to be physically moved from one place to the other. In cases of loss or damage, there needs to be an agreement in place to establish which library will cover the cost. The vast majority of libraries do not pass this cost on to the requesting patron; they can budget for the cost, seek direct grant funding, form consortiums to share the cost, and contract with library service non-profits for courier service. Because of cost, ILL is sometimes not a possibility for smaller libraries in book deserts that often form in rural and urban communities-- i.e. communities that would benefit most from this vital resource sharing.
IMLS provides funding sourcing for small or underserved libraries and library communities. Access to IMLS curated and managed resources is VITAL to the survival of libraries as we know them and the systems of resource sharing that libraries have developed for their service populations.
As a reminder, the IMLS does not 100% fund *all* libraries.... but it provides critical support to nationwide institutions AND PERSONNEL all for the low, low price of 240 million dollars in 2024. As a reminder, the national defense budget in 2024 was 466 BILLION dollars.
Please, continue to make your voice heard. Share your stories with your friends and family. Contact your Congresspeople. Save our libraries!

Listen All Systems Red is so so funny from Gurathins perspective imagine you grew up with Space Socialism and was hired to go help some pal with science but you weren't allowed to go unless you rented AmaTeslas Torment Nexus Alexa Dot and then when you get there you find out a whole continent of people got annihilated by their Tourment Nexus rentals so you take a moment to check yours quickly and find out it already had disengaged its Don't Kill People box, the only thing you've ever been told prevented them from mass homiciding their clients, something that LITERALLY just happened to people you knew a day ago, and when you say to your fellow socialist doctors HEY I think our Tourment Nexus is fucked up and it's files said it killed dozens of people barely a year ago and we should probably get the hell away from it the same doctors are like look at what you're saying. You're hurting the Tourment Nexus' feelings. The Tourment Nexus is just a little construct who likes Netflix Gurathin stop antagonizing it on the plane ride.

“Public libraries are such important, lovely places!” Yes but do you GO there. Do you STUDY there. Do you meet friends and get coffee there. Do you borrow the FREE, ZERO SUBSCRIPTION, ZERO TRACKING books, audiobooks, ebooks, and films. Have you checked out their events and schemes. Do you sign up for the low cost courses in ASL or knitting or programming or writing your CV that they probably run. Do you know they probably have myriad of schemes to help low income families. Do you hire their low cost rooms if you need them. Have you joined their social groups. Do you use the FREE COMPUTERS. Do you even know what your library is trying to offer you. Listen, the library shouldn’t just exist for you as a nice idea. That’s why more libraries shut every year

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering

Fandom terms have to sound silly, like blorbo or squick, because fandom needs humbling. Not a lot. But just every so often you need a good grounding reminder that all of this is literally made up nonsense for fun.
If you take a fictional thing so seriously that silly words genuinely annoy you, you've gone too far and you need to dial it back.

Other things you can do today to make yourself a useful nuisance AND use services that are probably still available at your local library: send a fax to your local reps and your governor. Check with your local library about faxing! A lot of it is completely digital on your end to save the cost of the machine upkeep in libraries and should be a few cents or completely free.
US people! The asshole who currently resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave signed an EO on 3/14/2025 to defund the Institute of Library and Museum Services. YOU have the chance to call YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE and be REALLY ANNOYING in an INFORMATIVE WAY.
As an act of love to yourself, your neighbors, and your library workers, please call your Congresspeople and:
- Demand they do everything in their power to block this defunding
- Tell them libraries are important to you and you use their services and you don’t want those services to change or go away. You want MORE services which means MORE money.
- Demand they do everything in their power to end the current constitutional crisis. Congress has power of the purse, not the executive branch.
This is a fast and tangible way to support libraries! You get to vent your frustration about this regime! You get to know that I am genuinely thankful to you!
The information in this post is for the purposes of making phone calls. It is accurate, but not deeply nuanced. If you have further questions please send me an ask.

Interested in seeing how IMLS has affected libraries in your state or region? You can look up awarded grants and awards here to add some of the nuance that @emjee talks about in their post.
Our best examples of third places are under immediate threat. Please call your Representatives and your Senators. Support the staff and professionals fighting to keep libraries and museums diverse, equitable, and accessible spaces!
