Beneath Stardrop Skies - Chapter 1
Cool air hit my face as I stepped off the bus and onto the grounds of Pelican Town for the first time in almost twenty years. Spring had just arrived, meaning the mornings were still a bit brisk. This particular morning frost covered the Earth, and a cold wind blew shivers down my spine. I very much looked forward to this Summer, when I knew warm weather would return. I remembered trips to the beach with my grandpa as a child, the hot sun beating down as we fished the afternoon away.
I still couldn't believe that he was gone.
It had been a little over a year now since grandpa passed away and left me his little farm, Stardrop Meadows. I'd spent several Summer's on the farm with him as a child, tending to the crops, caring for the animals, and getting into a whole lot of trouble. Well, as much as a ten-year-old could get into, anyways. But those vacations spent with him were some of the fondest memories I can recall. So, when Stardrop Meadows fell into my lap I leapt at the chance. It didn't help that I had so much to run from n the city. Eight years wasted on a meaningless career and pointless relationships....
But alas, I was stronger for it. And I was here to turn the page and start a new story. I was certain this was exactly what I needed.
"Amity, is that you?"
Hearing my name, I froze. I hadn't expected anyone to recognize me after so long. Turning, I noticed a pretty petite redhead by the ticket machine to my right. Her short coppery locks seemed to glimmer in the morning light as she sauntered over, hands in her wool-lined vest.
"I'm Robin!" She smiled at me. "Mayor Lewis sent me to be your official welcome committee to Pelican Town!" She extended a hand, and I shook it, grinning.
Lewis was an old friend of my grandpa's. In fact, he was the only person from Pelican Town that I expected to recognize me. He'd been at the funeral last year to pay his respects. Before that it had been seventeen years since I'd last seen the man. Still, despite the years he had been as warm as ever and strongly encouraged me to move back "home" whenever I was ready. It had taken fourteen months, but I was finally here.
"That's so sweet!" I beamed at Robin. "Thank you, I wasn't expecting any sort of welcome today."
"We all try and be here for one another around here. It's only right you receive that support from the moment you arrive." She grinned. "Plus, I'll be honest I was very intrigued to meet the new farmer." Robin stopped and surveyed me for a moment, hazel eyes searching. "You're not quite what I expected, though."
I couldn't say that was surprising. My long turquoise hair was situated atop my head in two buns, my curls leaking from the sides. I'm sure the tattoos and nose piercings were shocking, too. What kind of farmer looked like a wasted away punk rocker? At least, that's what my mother had said before I left.
Admittedly, after grandpa passed, I'd gone off the deep end a little bit. I rebelled from my boring everyday life, neglected my job, and completely changed my outward appearance. While I would never regret the latter, souring my chances at corporate life in the city stung more than I thought it would.
"I get that a lot." I said hurriedly, trying to avoid any questions from this stranger. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you." And it was the truth. I had been nervous about this move for months now, it was a relief to be greeted by a friendly face.
"Likewise," Robin gave a small genuine smile. "So, shall we get you to Stardrop Meadows?"
"Absolutely."
My hands tightened on the strap of my messenger bag, stomach doing somersaults. I guess it was officially time to start this new journey.
