‘ -- my momma will have my ass on a plate if i don’t do those dishes before she gets home.’ but there’s such a big mountain of them and the couch is so much more comfortable, especially with his feet in tony’s lap. the other boy doesn’t seem to mind his inclination to take up as much room as possible, though his momma would definitely have his ass on a plate because of that too. 

with a groan, he rolls off the sofa. ‘you want some leftovers before i get going?’

‘ SO, i have to ask – how exactly did you and mr stark meet? i’ve heard HIS version, and honestly i don’t believe a word of it. he seems to like EMBELLISHING the details. ’

 ‘ -- he probably is. no, definitely is. you’re lucky you’ve caught onto the bullshit early--excuse my french.’ he flashes pepper a smile. ‘we met when he lived down the hall from me in my freshman year. tiny kid, no older than sixteen. i have plenty of blackmail pictures and stories, but i’ll just tell you this--he was a geek. a big, certified geek.’

he stuffs open palms into the pockets of his slacks, clammy hands soon balling into fists. leave it to rhodey to read him like an open book. “ well, considering your question, do you really think coffee is a good idea? you’re sending me mixed signals, rhodes. “ thin-pressed lips falter to crack a smile, though with a shrug of his shoulders, it disappears. “ there’s what—— 168 hours in a week ?? and we’re supposed to get about eight hours a night… “ he trails off, looking up to the ceiling as if he’s doing the math in his head. however, it’s feigned, seen as a joke. the true amount is of little concern. “ don’t know. wish i could tell you. “

hell, even if he had done the math, tony wasn’t sure. however, the knotting in his gut and the reoccurring headaches were enough to clue him in that it wasn’t sufficient. “ what about you? how are you holding up? “

‘-- who says all of it’s for you?’ there’s a little smirk, haphazard and an attempt at humor, as he raises his own mug to his lips. it’s strange, the heaviness between them--and the fact that he’s breaking it feels even more foreign. gaze remaining on the other, he exhales, humor disappearing to exhaustion and a frown on his features, palm flat against his face. 

‘we’re getting too old for this, you know. i thought i was finished fighting other men’s wars when i left active duty.’ other men--rhodey doesn’t say it’s wrong, doesn’t say it’s right. he’s a soldier, above all things--he doesn’t question his orders, that much is embedded in him. this isn’t about him though, and he changes the subject. ‘forget the coffee, you should get some sleep. you look rough. like, very rough. morning after an MIT frat party rough.’

‘i’m just saying, rogers,’ he offers the younger man a cold beer before sitting beside him, turning up the volume to hear the game better. it’s a little weird having captain america in his living room, but he’s been in the air force for over twenty years--has had the utmost pleasure of knowing tony stark for longer. weirder things have happened. ‘and no offense to you, but the air force is clearly and objectively the superior branch.’
