What's your opinion on the relationship between Lana and Clark (Smallville). Particularly, I'm not a fan.

Sigh.

Okay. It was a first love. And I'm very understanding of it until around season 4. It really should have been just a high school thing. And the introduction of Lois, for me, made it even more apparent that their time should have been up. It needed to transition to a place where they were friends. Instead it was drawn out for four more years and it sucked.

Don't believe me? Believe the leading man in 2004:

Clark was very stunted in the relationship. He put Lana up on a pedestal and created an image of her. She called him out on that in Season 7 and even said that she didn't think that he truly believed that she was "the one" he was going to end up with. They didn't trust each other. They didn't really know the true person inside the other (hello Bizarro and fight from Siren). They kept trying to be something they weren't. They kept fighting to fit the circle into a square. It didn't fit . And jump to after Requiem (ugh. 🤢). Clark just gives up. It's not worth it anymore. The universe has undeniably screamed just stay away from each other, you're toxic to one another--- for reals now. It was like they were addicts for pain and suffering---😬. But with some withdrawal it's like the mind clears up and the body recovers.

The biggest point the show made was, every break-up and every "omg Lana is gone/dead"--- Clark was sad, yes, but the man still lived. Even when he was about to go to the fortress finally in S7, he doesn't follow through. He has purpose and a support system (cough Lois cough). He lost someone that meant a lot to him, but he's patching up and moving forward.

Let's jump to Infamous. He's blurring around saving people, not mentioning she who shall remain nameless, and is ultimately more affected by the fact Lois is hurt that he didn't pick her up from the airport and thinks she isn't important. He rights that wrong when he turns back time. (And one thinks he could have, I don't know, jumped back to when someone turns into walking Kryptonite. Talk about not high on the priority list. Just saying.)

He's moving on. He's not dwelling. He's also not searching endlessly for a cure (see season 11 when he does the opposite for himself and Lois). Why? Because he's facing facts. That arc, is terrible all around for all those characters and it's taken a while to really bear it on a certain level, but it's the metaphors and the parallels. In Bulletproof Clark remarks if he squints it's like she's 14 again. This is the point. She's always that girl. In Rabid when he finally closes the book officially? The picture is of her from high school, like 15/16. The scrapbook is pictures from high school. Again, it's always the same. It's the dream. The fantasy. That's all it ever was. When it got real and when it got difficult they would bail. They couldn't handle it. Because they weren't meant to.

Am I going to say that their love wasn't real? No. It was a first love. But it morphed into something very unhealthy.

However, the fact that he loved and he loved so much, it was also a teaching tool.

The guy was scared in S8 because the more time he spent with Lois, the deeper his feeling were getting. He never thought he would ever love anymore more than Lana. He said that on a few occasions (and anvil Lois would appear lol). So, he denies it, fights it, tries to cover it by going back to something he already knows. Because this is new. He's freaked out by it because it's Lois, one of his best friends, and a person never wants to hurt.

He then finds a way to be two people with her, revealing the part of himself that he doesn't fully understand and she's the one asking him what he needs. She knows nothing about this blur. And she's not even scared. She just wants to help and be a sounding board. Typical Lois. Thus, begins the free fall.

When he loses her in Doomsday he's devastated. He searched everywhere. HE HAS NO HOME. WHAT A BOOKEND TO S8. Were we supposed to forgive the AoS because the connection is revealed, that "I'm going to be a little closer to home" and "There's no sign of Lois...Home? I don't have a home. Clark Kent is dead." and it's all tied to Lois? Eh. I've made my peace. Mostly because of Savior/Metallo.

Now, I won't write my essays about those two episodes because I've written enough now...more than I should have. I feel like I might have deviated a bit.

Anyway, you asked my opinion on those two.

So, in conclusion, it lasted too long. It was unhealthy in the later seasons. It was a first love that taught Clark what love feels like. The intensity, though, I don't think he was aware of until he let himself fall for Lois. When he realized he needed her. When he wasn't blind anymore and recognized she was his soulmate.

Most importantly, he learned from it. Dreams versus reality.

At the end of the Pilot, Lana dances with him, but it's a fantasy. She asks "Is everything okay?" and he says "It's perfect", only to reveal he's alone. It wasn't real.

In Finale, walking down the aisle, Lois asks him the same thing. And his reply is the same "it's perfect" because this was his dream that was now a reality and with Lois by his side he is never alone (see: his vows).

That first relationship was an applebox stepping stone. Somewhat needed, but lord the amount of steps.

I'm...done? And I'm sorry. I have a lot of feelings.

my FAVORITE tropes compiled thanks to some suggestions from others

a character gets a sick burn and doesn’t realize it immediately, at some point later there’s just “HEY WAIT A MINUTE”

the double take. this one’s an oldie but a goodie

the injured character makes the killing shot that saves everyone else in a dangerous situation

a character who isn’t speaking is doing something weird in the background, it’s subtle and never acknowledged it’s just there for those who notice it (pulling another character out of something they got stuck in, making a huge sandwich, etc)

the beleaguered assistant inches away from smacking their boss

“quick act natural”

in that vein, the leader character was just in a shouting match with someone and when they come back the rest of the team scrambles to look like they weren’t listening at the door

never forget: “he’s standing right behind me isn’t he”

I heard reference to something about how all anime are required to have good looking cabbage because of That One Time. So simply looking up "anime cabbage" I found the source.

Some harem anime way back in the day had an episode where the characters cooked, and they animated cabbage so terribly like this it left a bad mark on the anime community forever. Apparently this is part of the reason why all food usually looks good in anime, even moreso than the regular show sometimes. With cabbage being especially well drawn.

A complaint, apparently in a paper.

The first show when released internationally was reanimated in this part.

And high quality or low quality cabbage is sometimes referenced.

I learned of this because the most recent Hologra episode has noel eating cabbage, tearing apart a fine quality cabbage into two low poly halves.
