She really should have expected that, if only because her little starshine was a child, and children liked things like this- just as Mikoto used to be, herself. Briefly, she remembers doing the same thing to her own mother... With a soft laugh, Mikoto shifts slightly where she crouched. 

“I see. It’s very cute, isn’t it? But I’m sure it will want to go home eventually- so in a little bit, why don’t we do just that?” Certainly she always did like amphibians and reptiles, but honestly, there was no way Mikoto was going to let Kamui keep one as a pet- not currently, at least. “It can stay a little longer, though, don’t worry- why not stay with me while I finish my work, then we can bring your little friend back to it’s home?” 

She giggled at the hand in her hair – Kamui always liked it when her mama played with it. She was always very gentle with her ( especially on the days that she tripped! The carefully tended to scrapes on her knees were proof enough of that ). Her mama was the best mama in the whole wide world, as far as she was concerned! No one deserved the title more than her.

“I did!” Small hands snake into the pockets of her dress, feeling around carefully. Was it still here…? Something cold, slightly wet… Ah-ha! Gently pulling out her new friend, she showed it off to her mother, smile wider than before. “I was playing by the field and I saw this – Miss Miriel says its a microhellday!”

The frog, mildly perturbed after being taken from its warm, dark place, croaked in annoyance.

“You wouldn’t be the first,” Mikoto admits once she removes the candy- it was good, but hey. She needed to talk. With the curse on Valla weighing heavily on her mind, she can’t help but frown. “And certainly, you and the others have good reason to be. But I’ve my secrets as well, you know.”

“Course he ain’t. The bait was for you.” He’ll have to think of a nickname for her at some point. Nothing really came to mind at this point. The sucker is popped into Mikoto’s mouth as a smirk tugs at Gaius’ lips. “Let’s just say I’m a bit curious about you.”

An art trade with @ladyfarona , who wanted a queen hinoka!! I based the outfit off of the falcon knight outfit, since the royals basically still wear their class uniforms. Plus she has such a strong fighting spirit, in a different way from sakura or mikoto

“Logically, you’re right. But when has the heart listened to logic?”

Valla would have been kinder, had things gone... differently. It was a tragedy in many parts. 

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought this up so suddenly...” 

“…You shouldn’t feel guilty.”

“We might wonder about the ‘what ifs’ but… I know that my life would have been much worse if I had stayed in Nohr. How you brought me here aside, I… wouldn’t have been safe there.”

“It’s... just a state of life for me, really.” The only one she’d ever known. “But sometimes I feel like a babysitter.” Mikoto jokes, laughing softly. “The last thing I want is for Hoshido to suffer- this country’s happiness is what I consider above all else when deciding my methods. And what good would war bring us? Our farms are prosperous, our people are wealthy...” 

“Well, I just mean do you enjoy being a royal? Is it extremely stressful? Do you ever wonder if peaceful methods are the right method, but then realize other methods would just instill fear?” She was talking more about herself at that moment, really.

“Well, I certainly try to be. And I hope that my children are as well. But what do you mean by ‘what it’s like’? There’s quite a bit behind that, after all.” 

“Yes, that’s me. And if it’s not a bother, I’ve been curious what being a royal in Hoshido was like. I was told you’re very kind and approachable. I only really know what Nohrian nobility is like, and it’s from guarding Lord Leo.”

There is a long pause before the queen speaks. 

“I don’t know. ... But so many things have happened beyond anyone’s choice- it’s only natural to wonder about the ‘what ifs’, isn’t it?” 

“…I don’t regret coming to Hoshido. I… I feel safe here. Nohr wasn’t safe… I’ve told you about that, though.”

“I… just wish it could have happened in a different way. I don’t know how– I’m not sure I ever wold have come to Hoshido at all if I hadn’t been taken… I would have lived my life locked in that tower– but I… it would have been easier if it had been different.

“Why do you ask?”

Ah. The queen first, and then the mother? Usually it was the other way around. But she couldn’t hold it against him. Much had happened, even without the years of separation. It was... saddening, in a way. Many ways, really. 

In truth, she should not have been up and about yet. But few in life could ever get the results they wanted out of her. With a soft smile, pushing those thoughts out of her mind, Mikoto shook her head. 

“Not exactly... though if you are willing, I wouldn’t mind talking. Is everything alright?”

it’s been a few weeks since he joined the royal family back in castle shirasagi and he still felt extremely out of place. of course, things weren’t going to change overnight but it was difficult to accept the familiar kindness when he couldn’t return the gesture.

valeriu was standing in his the old bedroom when a soft voice cut through the silence and brought him back to the present. seeing the queen in front of him, he gave a hasty bow, “oh, your highness–” at the slip-up, the blond fumbled, ï mean, mother!”
