Too many people are cutting off lyrics early to make them sound nonsensical. Of course “karma is a cat” sounds weird out of context (though you could still infer (in-fur lol) what it means if you thought about it for longer than a second). But the wider theme of the song is how karma has a reputation for causing harm, but Taylor is rarely at the sharp end of it, summed up with: “karma’s a relaxing thought, aren’t you envious that for you it’s not?” Which is almost immediately followed by “karma is a cat, purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me.” Cats have a similar reputation for being fickle—if not completely disinterested in your well-being—and cruel; think of any number of videos of a cat going from affectionate to violent without warning (“soft and squishy, sharp and pointy,” etc.). But, as with karma, Taylor has an established positive history with the animal. (Oh karma/cats have been bad to you? Sounds like a you problem! They love me! You get from the relationship what you put in!; “I keep my side of the street clean, you wouldn’t know what I mean.”) But also why are we hinging the quality of music on whether or not every lyric sounds profound? Simple lyrics have their place. Silly lyrics have their place! But also is it (this conversation) that serious? No lol idk Anyway karma is my boyfriend karma is a god karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend karma’s a relaxing thought—

Okay I’m gonna go to sleep but I have to post this.

The characters in willow are REINCARNATING into the same doomed love story over and over again throughout time. I’ve believed that folklore had reincarnation themes since:

“Your heartbeat on the high line once in twenty lifetimes” on Cardigan.

The string is literally the string of fate.

First she’s a medieval woman from the 1400s or so who just sees his face in the lake. Major Swan princess vibes

Then she’s in like a really 1500s Renaissance era. Shakespeare is thriving.

Then it’s very much the late 1600s and she’s literally a character in young Goodman brown/ the Salem witches era.

Then its the 1700s and she’s a pioneer woman having a forbidden love affair.

Betty in cardigan is just one of her incarnations and James is the guy from the video in every lifetime.

The thread through all of it is stories about their star crossed love and the lifetimes they live together but something always keeps them apart! *looks directly at champagne problems and cowboy like me*

It’s KILLING me that more people aren’t discussing this so like I just really need it to catch on so I have someone to talk to about it.
