saw a tweet that referred to mismag as a "love letter" to harry potter. no, it isn't. that just isn't true. "charlie brown had hoes"-level accusation. if anything, mismag is hatemail to harry potter. it's a "fuck you, you don't own magical schools, we're gonna make a whimsical magical school and read you for filth while we're doing it" letter.

not to say i don't understand if it still doesn't sit right with some folks (everyone is entitled to their own preferences and if you'd rather never engage with anything hp-adjacent that's your right) but i just think it's a mischaracterization of aabria and the cast/crew's intentions. they started the show with "fuck terfs"

There's a couple video games where you play an octopus but none that take advantage of everything you could actually do. This is an animal group that practically evolved to be platformer mascots with way too many moves to remember.

Cling to and climb any surface

Grab and reel in things from a distance

Hold and use multiple objects simultaneously

Swing stuff around and throw it

Grapple attack

Jet propulsion when you're in water

The same move is a water gun on land

Ink cloud in water

Long range concentrated ink gun when you're on land

Sharp powerful beak to cut things open/damage enemies

Squeeze through small openings

Blend perfectly against any solid surface

Without a surface to camouflage against, just mimic an object

Venom (almost all octopuses have venom not just blue rings!)

Take shells/pots/other hollow objects as temporary armor

Rapidly change color to mesmerize other creatures

Intimidate different enemies with special shape and color combos

This is all just what any typical octopus species can actually do in real life before you add video game exaggeration, at which point you can have the slingshot physics of Octodad or treat the camouflage as just going totally invisible (though that wouldn't be as fun as having to factor the environment into different disguises). Add fantasy/science fiction elements like Splatoon and you can just go nuts. "Spellcasting" through various sequences of color change? Elemental ink types? Mesmerizing expanded to remote mind control or taming/recruiting different wildlife?? I know you're gonna suggest games or media but listen, I know each and every time an octopus has been a game protagonist and not a single one of them portrays even half of these traits. Venom alone has just never been acknowledged as a typical normal octopus thing at all!

Liv has always been kind of short.

It's fine. It works for her, right? She's pretty, petite , has big dark eyes and full lips. It would be weird if she was tall. Girls who look like her aren't supposed to be tall. Not that there aren't tall girls who are pretty, like Jennifer had been, or like Christina from her math class last year who played basketball and had dreams of the NBA. It's just something that's not for Liv.

But she had been, as Kingskin— Steven. Someone had said it was upsetting to behold her— him— her-as-him, broad and looming and barely managing to fit into his suit, as well-tailored as it had been. Liv gets a lot of time to think about what she would do better, apprenticing at the tailor's shop. Where Steven's tailor had gone wrong, assuming the way (she-as-he) was built mirrored a regular man, just scaled up. She spends a lot of time thinking about how she had looked at him, how powerful she had felt in his skin, and the way she kind of missed it.

Things are better, in the real world. Better than they were, when she was so anxious she was stealing things she didn't want from the Walgreens. Her parents are proud of her, she's seeing Wendell every chance she can get, and she loves the tailor shop more than she's loved anything she's ever done before. Her new boss, Jacob, calls her a young'un and beams with pride whenever she does even an okay job, and Liv is content, for once.

But she still kind of wants more. It's a cavernous feeling in her chest, the same empty space she was trying to fill with the black nail polish and size 14 men's slippers. The craving she had hoped would be filled, now that she was out of the tape and wasn't trying to be someone she wasn't anymore.

Low-level Dungeons & Dragons adventure where one of those big goofy skywhale things has died and crash-landed in the middle of town, and what initially appears to be a simple cleanup assignment abruptly takes a combat-heavy turn when the party gets to find out what feeds on skywhalefalls.
