i was born with Fire burning
at the root of my heart
at the base of my throat
at the bottom of my lungs.
and with every beat of my heart,
it spread
it spread
i t s p r e a d
like the blood in my veins
until
my whole body was afire
in flames
and people would tell me–
watch out, little one, or you might be singed
and i kept shouting back–
can’t you feel it?
can’t you feel yourself burning up right now?
can’t you smell the smoke and see the flickers?
can’t you feel it razing you down from the inside out?
Fire was my unseen twin
my cradle
my birthmate
and i suspect Fire will be
my deathbed
too.
after all,
what can Fire do but burn?
so i think my happy ending
is to flare out like a supernova
and perhaps
light the world
for just a moment
so that the darkness that frightens us all
may retreat and lift away and vanish
for just a moment.
after all,
what can Fire do but burn?
if i live to see the Fire die in me
i do not know who i will be then
but i do know that
i do not want to know
that person–
made only of ashes blowing in the wind
of the memory of warmth
of the mirage of light on the horizon where the sun died
of the aftertaste of something glorious.
after all,
what can i do but burn?
I think I was born to die young ( j.p. ) (via pencap)
