𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙰𝙽𝙶𝙴𝚁'𝚂 𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙿𝙻𝙸𝙼𝙴𝙽𝚃 is not the first of its kind that has been offered to silas, but it still earns a lilt of his mouth in something that almost resembles a smile, hands busy readying the violin to settle into its proper resting place inside the case. there was never really a chance of that aspiration coming to fruition, but silas had only even understood the concept vaguely, anyway. music was performed only in church where he is from, for worship and the glory of god. his work with the violin is now dedicated to the antithesis of this ― the joy of people who stop to watch him on the street corner or in the park, the necessary monetary gain from the crumpled bills they toss into the case from time to time when generosity strikes them.
but here and now, there’s no good reason to unload the complicated train of thought on the stranger who hadn’t asked, and so his hands find his pockets and he lifts his shoulders in a good natured shrug.
“ prefer th’outdoors if m’being honest, but thanks, all the same, ” only half a lie from the now evidently lousianian as he speaks, eventually smiling apologetically at the stranger, who hasn’t looked away once. “ ‘fraid the show’s about windin’ down for th’night, though. ”
@startsfires, Silas Poe
╭┈┈⛧ Michael watches the violinist from afar. Sees some passersby sacrifice the one or other coin, others halt for a couple minutes to listen. Why did he stop by? Perhaps it's just his own interpretation but the tune strikes him as one rooted in sorrow, melancholy. Damaged souls attract him, he can't help. They tell the most intriguing stories. They have depth. It's when the music trails off and it seems like the performance ends that Michael finally approaches. Hands loosely clasped behind his black-clad frame, he halts at two arms' length distance. And simpers. ❛ Misplaced talent. ❜ He cants his head to one side, doesn't blink while pinning the musician under his unwavering stare. ❛ You should be standing on an actual stage. ❜

there is a certain element of religious mysticism that accompanies the hunger in silas when the keening of needing to eat becomes fevered. though the roots of that devotion remain gnarled, unwatered and untended in the day to day by the otherwise atheist louisiana native, this sense of christian hued morality and rule abiding begins to seep into his bones when the hunger moves from peckishness that can be ignored to wild, aching fire in his belly.
that same fervor for justice and purity becomes equally as undeniable as the taboo need that is tied to it. he must choose wisely, has to pick the right one, and if pushed to madness by the hunger, the stringency of the burden of proof for this begins to slack. gluttons, adulterers, the lustful, and the greedy are held to the same standard as murderers when starvation begins to sting. the monstrous thing in silas cannot be indulged if it is not first pardoned and ordained in doing so, by none other than the very god he has no allegiance to. they have to have earned it, have to deserve it — at least in his mind.
it’s the only way he is able to make peace with what he cannot stop himself from doing, to tell himself the actions that leave him most assuredly hellbound ( if there is such a place ) are ridding the world of something profane and undesirable in the process.
