Discussion: Kylo Ren Episode IX “Spoilers”

Today we discuss the latest episode IX “spoilers”    

   making the rounds in the Star Wars fandom. You can find the video version of this episode on YouTube and the audio only version on Soundcloud and iTunes. Beware “spoilers”!

In this episode we discuss the recent “spoilers” posted on reddit. If you’ve been paying attention to this news you’ve probably noted the largely dismayed reactions among Kylo enthusiasts.

In today’s episode we discuss why these masked Kylo spoilers make perfect sense, and why they bode well for the Reylo and Bendemption causes.

Tumblr NSFW Purge

For anyone who doesn’t know already, on December 17th this year Tumblr will be having a huge purge of NSFW content and NSFW content will not be allowed on the website anymore. Unfortunately, this doesn’t just mean NSFW content, though- it means content that is perfectly fine will be removed or flagged as NSFW, because the system is that bad.

What will happen to the Tumblr Reylo Fandom? We don’t know quite yet, only time will tell how bad this situation will get. (An accidental rhyme)

Before you ask, I am staying here on Tumblr, and will be active as always!

In the mean time, I wanted to talk about some other alternatives, as well as the state of this blog, and some other recommendations to keep in mind.

Alternatives

Twitter: As much as this website has it’s own issues, and known for being a place where many anti’s hang out, this is another option just in case.

Pillowfort.io: While I haven’t used this one yet yet, I’ve heard many good things about it, and it seems to be an amazing Tumblr alternative at the moment.

Reylo Discord Community: This is a really great way to keep in touch with the Reylo fandom and talk about whatever. (There is an NSFW section!)

Reylo Chat Party Discord: Another great Reylo Discord to keep in contact with the fandom. (also with NSFW section!)

Reylo SkyForum: A good forum site with really friendly Reylos! I know a lot of them are on Tumblr as well, but there are some who are not. Another nice place to talk with the fandom.

Update On This Blog

Once again: I am not going to leave Tumblr. This blog will be kept up and active.

I’ve made a Twitter for this blog. No guarantees in completely moving to Twitter, but that is available for people who are going to be moving there.

The pillowfort.io site is currently down, but I’ll be making one there as well once it comes back up, hopefully under this same username.

Reminders

It’s a great idea to back up your blog. That way (if by a miracle) that anything changes, you have all the data in your blog stored. But also so you can just scroll through it. Wordpress is a good website to upload it there.

Download all the Reylo Anthologies that are available. You never know if you’ll be able to see them again! You can find a list of the anthologies here.

Mwahahahaha! Tina and Felix are back as promised for a more in depth discussion of Lotura, the fandom name for the canon relationship between Emperor Lotor and Princess Allura of DreamWorks’s Voltron: Legendary Defender. The ladies reminisce about their induction into heroine/villain romances and how they got started in the Voltron fandom. Next, they discuss character development between Prince Lotor and Princess Allura in Toei’s Voltron: Defender of the Universe and why the writing suggests the pair was set up for a romantic endgame before the series’ cancellation. They also talk about sexual dimorphism in romantic writing, similarities and differences between both versions of Lotura and Reylo, and why being a “dark youth” matters in redemption stories. Felix steps briefly onto her soapbox about sexual harassment and why context and framing matter in stories with a villainous (or even heroic) crush. The ladies wrap up with analysis of Season 7 and predictions about Season 8 of Legendary Defender. Hint: It’s all good news.

It’s time to show some love to our favorite Big Deal in the Resistance! In today’s episode we discuss:

Finn’s character traits and his arc in TFA, TLJ and supplementary materials.

The impact of childhood separation and emotional neglect on Finn’s sense of identity and his attachments.

“You looked at me like no one else ever has.” Why the intensity of Finn’s sudden attachment to Rey is important for his development, but is not necessarily healthy.

“Something to fight for.” In Sublimation 101 we analyze how Finn is able to process his separation from Rey by finding a worthy cause to fight for, taking an important step towards reclaiming his identity.

We talk foils: Kylo Ren likely subconsciously identifies with Finn as an externalization of his own goodness, which might explain key instances of his compassion vs cruelty towards the former stormtrooper. 

Finn’s lack of remorse: a sign of an underwritten character or an obvious use of denial as maladaptive coping? Por qué no los dos? 

Most well adjusted: we overview mature vs primitive defense mechanisms, and contrast Finn’s predominant use of mature defenses with Rey and Kylo Ren’s use of primitive defense mechanisms, such as acting out, denial, and projection.

Remember being told so many times that you were wrong, that maybe even part of you started to believe it too?

In today’s episode we discuss why Kylo Ren is the rock star of TLJ.

Thanks to the marketing of episode VIII, complete with Reylotastic “two-halves” type quotes courtesy of one Rian Johnson, it was clear even prior to the release of the film that Rey and Kylo Ren would be sharing protagonist duties. Even so, the extent to which events in TLJ orbit around Kylo Ren was    

In today’s episode:

All roads lead to Kylo Ren. From an emotional and plot moving standpoint, the key relationships in episode VIII center around Kylo Ren: we talk Rey-Ben, Kylo-Snoke, Luke-Ben, with a dash of Leia-Ben thrown in for good measure.

When it comes to epic climaxes, Kylo Ren has very little refractory period *cough*. He’s at the center of the two main climactic moments in TLJ: Snoke’s encounter with The Moon Door and Luke’s astral projection master troll. 

Kylo Ren fangirling: check. We discuss the ways that TLJ went out of its way to make Kylo appealing to certain subsets of the audience in a way TFA could not (looking at you, “Crylo Ren” haterz u_u) .We also thoroughly gush about Kylo’s fancy lightsaber skills, his “platonic” shirtlessness (lulz) and TLJ’s awesome callbacks to the PT through Kylo’s channeling of his granddaddy and grandma Amidala’s swag.

Meanwhile, Rey is definitely an instigator in the plot, but Kylo’s decisions have the biggest impact on the story, and he experiences their consequences in real time.

Speaking of Rey: mo Kylo mo betta (fact check: true) but when it comes to Rey’s character development we were expecting to get ¾ portion at least. 

In the same vein, we’re still not feeling Luke in TLJ, but have (mostly) come to terms with the fact that the ST’s approach to the OT heroes highlights the importance of Ben Solo in this story.

The good, the bad and the ugly: we overview popular “Let’s Exonerate Ben” theories that might smooth Kylo’s road into the hearts of haters who be hatin. To wit: Kylo didn’t do it!!    “Han activated the lightsaber,” “Ben was brainwashed” and “Snoke killed the Padawans” edition. Collect them all!

Lastly, Denise called it: some thoughts on Ben Solo’s bumpy road to redemption, and the false promise of TLJ’s most beloved tagline. We see your “Let the past die, kill it if you have to” and raise you a “You cannot deny the truth that is your family,” Ben Solo.

Hutts in Episode IX?

“It’s too late for that Solo. You may have been a good smuggler but now you’re bantha fodder.” – Jabba the Hutt (Return of the Jedi) 

The vile, slug-like Jabba the Hutt was a looming presence throughout the Star Wars Original Trilogy and was infamous enough to warrant a cameo appearance in the Prequel Trilogy. So far, though, the Hutts have been strangely absent from the Sequel Trilogy. However, could that change in Episode IX? 

In this episode of Six Degrees of Kylo Ren, we’ll look at some empirical evidence and one well-known “leak” that suggests that we might very well be seeing the Hutts onscreen again before the end of the Sequel Trilogy.

Today’s episode is the first of our series, Psychology of the Characterization.

Our premise is that the three leads of the Sequel Trilogy: Rey, Ben Solo, and Finn, all share the same core conflict: childhood abandonment. This conflict has played out in completely different ways for them because of differences in temperament/personality, environment and subsequent life story.

We’ll discuss how these three story arcs are impacted by childhood abandonment, and break down their key character traits. With the storytelling premise that the core conflict must eventually be addressed by the story, we discuss how this shared background can eventually influence outcomes for the three leads of the ST in episode IX and beyond.

In today’s episode we focus on Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Naturally. u_u

We’re approaching our analysis of Ben’s personality structure using Heinz Kohut’s Self Psychology model, which posits that a failure in parental empathy during childhood can lead to poor self esteem that, when accompanied by other vulnerabilities, can later become the core of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.  

In Ben Solo we find a child who suffered from *perceived emotional abandonment and rejection by his parental figures, resulting in narcissistic traits: fluctuations between grandiosity and ideas of low self-worth, vulnerability to slights and need for admiration, and specific instances of narcissistic injury followed by narcissistic rage. Importantly, we highlight characterological traits but believe that it is not possible or appropriate to diagnose the character with a personality disorder (see Lee’s rant on the matter).

We also contend that Ben lacks a key element of NPD: lack of empathy. We believe that his interactions with Rey and to some extent Finn show a strong capacity for empathy that bodes well for his eventual rehabilitation.

In today’s episode we also discuss:

The origins of Kylo Ren as a narcissistic projection of Ben Solo, designed to protect a fragile ego that is “being torn apart and wants to be free of this pain.”

While Kylo Ren believes that eliminating Ben Solo will lead to healing and escape from pain, we maintain that integrating the two pieces and healing the split through love will eventually lead to Ben’s redemption.

We overview the three personality clusters and common primitive defense mechanisms, including splitting, projection, projective identification, and regression.

We discuss how the Reylo connection impacts Ben’s arc and illuminates important aspects of his personality and character structure that would otherwise be overlooked    like the fact that he admires strong women and isn’t intimidated by them, that he is capable of not just empathy, but compassion, and other signs that bode well for a satisfying conclusion to his arc.

In the next episode of this series we’ll discuss more Kylo Ren, more Finn and Rey and of course: Reylo. Stay tuned for more!
