PLUTONIAN SEA CLOWN
Just found this drawing I made back in December of an open-ocean swimming organism from the subterranean ocean under Pluto. This was an exercise to try to get back into the groove of working on my Field Guide to Saturn. With that in mind, I’lll let Hya tell you more about it in this message she sent to Jess.
“To my brave explorer,
The ROV finally broke through into Pluto’s subterranean ocean this morning. Took longer than expected because the sterile sealers weren’t closing properly behind the craft. Dr. Miura is adamant about not contaminating the ocean with microbes from the Plutonian surface or from Earth.
Got our first look at marine life almost immediately. We’ll need to examine a specimen up-close to classify them, but for now we’re calling them “sea clowns” and I am 100% okay with that becoming their common name.
Sea clowns appear to be open-ocean swimmers similar to anchovies. It’s hard to estimate their exact size with no point of reference, but they appear to be about the length of a human hand, not including the tail. A series of pits on their heads are believed to contain chemosensory organs kind of like an Earthly whalefish. The “clown face” is made of four red bioluminescent eyes spaced around the head and U-shaped blue bioluminescent organs just behind them. There is also a row of blue lights running down the dorsal surface. We’re not sure what the thick tendrils or tentacles near their heads are for, but based on the way the sea clowns flick them around, we think they might be sensory.
Sea clowns swim using undulations of the corkscrew-shaped fins on their long tail like a ship’s screw. They stabilize and turn with the larger flaps running along their bodies.
You’ve probably also noticed those smaller worm-like creatures. We haven’t gotten a good enough look to say much about them yet, but they appear to be carrying egg masses, though Dr. Hernandez has suggested they could even be parasites.
Anyway, that’s all for now. I’ll send some more photos from the ROV cam when I have a moment. Love you.
Your little orange fly,
Hya.”

I feel like "trump wants to throw away literal dinosaur fossils" would really turn heads if we actually had a functional opposition party in this country to get messages out, but I guess I'll just have to get a paint pen and write it on my car. fine, I'll do it.

A while ago I woke up from a half dream with the words, "nightjar weasel" echoing through my head. So today I set aside time to paint something up!
It's just. So cute. I'm calling it a Nightweasel. Please enjoy, and if you like it enough you could buy it on a bunch of stuff at my Redbubble, Teepublic, or Threadless!
Sales go to support a broke art student, and reassure me that the messages from my dreams are worth spending time on.

Actually “Arctic” refers to the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor which are visible from the North Pole but not the South Pole. “Arktos” being the Ancient Greek word for Bear.
What IS interesting is that bears do not appear in any other Greek myths, nor do they appear in Babylonian, Sumerian, or Phoenician constellation myths from which the Greeks took their own constellations. In these cultures the Big Dipper and Little Dipper are usually depicted as a war wagon or a plough.
There’s a theory that the bear interpretation of these constellations actually comes from northern Germanic, Slavic, or Central Asian peoples and was subsequently transferred to the Greeks by Phoenician traders. Many northern cultures have traditions of people turning into bears or having bear ancestors. This fits with the Greek myth surrounding Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, where they are the nymph Callisto and her son Arcas transformed by an angry Hera (because Zeus was up to his usual bullshit and fooling around with Callisto).
On a related note, the nearby constellation Boötes contains the star Arcturus which means “The bear watcher”, so this constellation is sometimes interpreted as a man herding the bears.

This is a sketch by 15 year old Abby Brabham, who was one of the witnesses of the Dover Demon. On April 22nd, 1977, Abby Brabham, and Will Taintor were witnesses to the creature. They had seen the creature just the night after John Baxter and Bill Bartlett had seen it.
Barbman described the creature as being down on all fours and having no hair. Brabham and Taintor described a creature almost identical to the one seen the previous night - all aside from the eye color. Baxter and Bartlett from the night prior had claimed the creature had orange eyes, while Brabham and Taintor were adamant about its green eyes.

Tumblr media
“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
