I'm more familiar with hosting audio for podfic than song sharing, but I usually see archive.org as a common host. There are some other options in this Dreamwith post if you don't want to use that option, though.

hey singingblr, what's the best place for hosting audio files if someone, say, wants to sing out her feelings and post them to tumblr in case anyone else finds them cathartic?

I didn't take part this year for more than one reason:

As someone who prefers to podfic existing fanfic instead of needing to write my own entry to podfic, I felt like I could take part in other events more easily as a podficcer.

(While there are no requirements that I write an entry in order to podfic, to me this seems to be the type of event where wanting more of XYZ to exist to podfic means needing to create XYZ myself. It happens with certain themes or fandoms for other events (so it's not too surprising), though it's possible that the bingo running for a few years now means that I could go back through past entries to look for some fic to podfic.)

I tried writing my own potential entries the time I did take part; my muse happened to pick a fandom where it's harder to use modern prompts, and I came away with the impression that I was somehow getting things wrong, even if no one explicitly said that. (Both in the sense of feeling like I was off historically and canon/fandom discordant.)

I hadn't experienced a daily list of submissions of fanworks posted by a certain time that day before (instead I've encountered daily lists of fanworks revealed after the submission deadline), so I posted to AO3 after the daily list time at least once. It wasn't the end of the world, but it did feel a little less fun. (Did I mess something up about the header info? Did I just post too late? Was I skipped for some other reason? Idk.) If I were to take part again, I'd probably skip trying to post across more than one day.

A little less specific to the Hanukkah Bingo, I've been struggling with creating anything in fandom spaces since October 7th. I've shared info about Hanukkah Bingo elsewhere, I've tried to share other events in different Discord servers, I've put forward some Jewish!Character prompts in a few prompt taking events, and I've basically been trying to do non-create-ZYX types of fannish activity. It feels like I haven't had any generative energy, any creative cups to pour from.

I'm not sure if it'll help relieve any worry about fixing a typo for you (or others reading this), but podficcers are capable of fixing typos while recording. Some will reach out to writers about fixing something, but some may fix small typos automatically (and only catch it in editing or if a listener points it out).

Unless you're rephrasing and making large edits, there's probably not going to be such a large difference in the texts that you fixing a typo will make an already recorded, edited, and posted podfic 'inaccurate'. Podficcers can also edit and re-upload audio if they want to match an updated text (or fix podfic equivalents of typos).

Pros of re-reading your own fic

a good time;

Has exactly the tropes you like and the characterization you want to read;

Gratification: yes you did finish a thing and yes you did do good;

just a very fun time all around.

Archive.org being down has got me curious about a bunch of stuff, so - poll! Also, hi! if you're a podficcer you are definitely invited to the podfic community on tumblr!

There's no "I don't podfic" option because it would win over any of the other options and it'd probably make me sad to see the graph so unbalanced

dropbox is on "allows streaming on ao3" and off ao3 because in my experience people don't always put it in their < audio > tags, just give the link.

My experience of anyone who doesn't have experience with listening to themselves on a recording - cis and trans people alike - is that they often are uncomfortable with hearing their recorded voice. There are minor editing tricks I've encountered from other podficcers in order to make editing your own podfic easier, but usually it just takes practice and acclimating to hearing your recorded voice. (Getting help from someone else for editing is possible, but I usually run into people who want to handle that on their own for podfic.)

I'm not saying this to try to scare you, aguineapigcouldntdothis, but it's more that if you do try to make a recording, you won't be alone if you're not enthusiastic about how your recorded voice sounds. It very well might be something where you stick the file somewhere to check years down the road and you might not love the process of recording or editing yourself recreationally, and that's an okay way to handle voice dysphoria.

Personally, I have had some moments in podficcing where reading a story helps more than trying to recreate "my natural voice", but that's more because I don't naturally click with free-talk or feeling like I'm on the spot. Narrating may change my inflection and breathing compared to a 'random recording of a candid conversation' approach, but I'm also not saying 'um' and other filler words for a minute. (I might just click better with comparing the same script, so I'm not picking apart whether my voice is different from using different text, too.) Your mileage may vary on this.

should I record my voice to see the progress that testosterone has caused? not one of those "X months on T" thing because I feel like I wouldn't speak in my natural voice for something scripted and I wouldn't post this. I just think it might be a nice thing to hear bc its really difficult to know what your own voice actually sounds like to others.

Ive always had very bad voice dysphoria so im a little scared that ill still sound super high pitched and feminine (I didnt even sound like that pre-T so idk why I would now) and that might stop me from doing this. my biggest fear regarding passing is my voice being my "tell" that i wasn't born a man

I'm kinda glad that asking if podfic could be submitted for commenters to choose from for April Comment Shower Bingo did end up allowing that fanwork type into the collection. The last I knew, two podfics that I didn't create have been added to the collection and I think at least one has new comments on them.

The state of commenting on podfic is different from commenting on fanfic, so anything that helps another comment on a podfic feels like some level of success.

Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo

WHAT: A fanworks bingo celebrating Jewish (and Jew-ish) characters across any and all fandoms. Write fanfiction and/or create graphics (moodboards, edits, vids, whatever you like) to fill prompts on this overall bingo card. Since this Bingo grid is larger than the usual bingo card, you do not need to complete a full row or column to get a Bingo -- any five fills = a bingo. If you DO fill out the complete card, that's a Full Menorah (instead of a Blackout, because festival of lights... yuk yuk yuk).

You can fill as many squares as applicable in your work (so if your characters have an applesauce versus sour cream versus ketchup latke debate, that's 5 squares and a full bingo!), but each square must be at least 100 words or 3 images, so you cannot write one 100-word fic and claim that it fills 5 squares, etc. The above example of the applesauce versus sour cream versus ketchup latke debate fic would need to be at least 500 words.

The comment was left about three weeks ago or so, but I keep mentally coming back to it. I’m used to not really getting very many comments on my podfic, and it usually doesn’t bother me. [As someone who started out writing and got very overwhelmed by update requests, I have sometimes been relieved by the relative quietness of my podficcing inbox.]

In hindsight, I kind of bit off more than I could chew with trying to do a Big Bang as my main reintroduction to the Merlin fandom. Trying to do 50K in that short of a time frame meant that I just didn’t have any inclination to look at another Merlin fic for the longest time afterwards. There was just too much stress associated with it.

But I think I’m going to go back through my Discord messages for the pronunciation notes and get a prep post ready for Merlin. Hopefully, I’ll feel a little more prepared and ready to try another Merlin fic if it feels like I don’t have to worry about pronunciation as much.
