My cousin finished reading the long walk copy i let her borrow, so here are her thoughts(she's read a lot of stephen king before this)
NOW FREINDLY REMINDER I DID NOT TALK TO HER AT ALL ABOUT THE BOOK AS SHE READ THE BOOK THE ONLY THINGS I REALLY TOLD HER WAS :
Arts my fav,pay attention to the char haters reason for being there ,ending Is devesive (plus my annotations but those all 90%doodles and memes)
-She liked garraty as a protagonist she found him compelling and a good vehicle to read the story through every one, and whike she found herself annoyed at him and wanting to get in the others' heads
-She didn't really like mcrives and his backstory confused her at first , but It made her really uncomfortable, (I pointed out some line and what I thought of them.and she was "like yeah I thought that too but I wasn't sure)and she didt really know how to feel about mcrives after either , but after another look through her, she descivley doesn't like him , though she didn't care for him much in general from the beginning.
-stebbins weirded her out she was surprised at the plotwist but then she was like dude I shoudve known there was more he was crazy sus ,she actully doesn't like stebbins cause he kept being rude and saying garraty wanted to ef his mom.....so fair and the sandwhiches and fit funny.
-her second fav was baker(VERY GOOD CHOICE) she thought he was nice and liked how he kept evreyone together and tried his best to be a good person besides the circumstances and he also made her really sad to here about all his ideations defenitly thinks he deserved the most out of anyone.
-her fav relationship was ART AND RAY(i promise you I didn't even mention them) she liked how unique it was compared to other reltionships and how soft and kind they were with eachother and how they never fought unlike the others and conteriveral opion :she thought that if they met outside of the walk they would be closer freinds than pete and ray And it's really sad that both of them brought each other the comfort and kindness the other was looking for and needed at the worst possible place and that "another time another place " was the perfect way to describe them
-AND HER NUMBER 1 DID NOT CHANGE HER ABSOULTE FAV WAS ABRAHAM LIKE SHES JUST OBSSED WITH HIM WAS A TSHCOOL READING HIS DEATH AUDIBLY GASPED AT HIS DEATH HAD TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN ACTULLY CRIED LIKE ITS NO COMPETION ABRAHAM IS HER FAVORITE NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE THAT YOULL HAVE TO RIP HIM OUT OF HER COLD HANDS
-overall she really liked the story, and couldn't put it down the ending was a bit unsatisfying but she understands why it had to be that way and that it made sense that he's never leaving the walk

Their so weird cause what do you mean you have a relationship full of geunine and pure love, respect, adoration, kindness ,even though your currently in a death walk, whatcha mean you view him as undoubtedly good & never doubt him even when your at most paranoid even with knowing all his darkness, like even your last goodbye was full of appreciation, promises, a smile, and idea what coudve been and the hope that it still can be-LIKE READ TO ROOM MAN WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO SWEET YOUR POOPIN IN PUBLIC 😟😟😟.....

I completely agree especially with songbirds and snakes which was abysmal there's this somber grittiness that I think simply won't be captured and how truly unbeautiful the events of the story and chachters are the walk is filled with blood,sh×t ,tears, and puke any fighting or drama is met with people simply separating themselves from the instigator, they talk crudley and often cruely, the boys are petty and perverted who only really care when their freinds get tickted they couldn't care less for anybody else charachters like mcrives are genuine bad people who you end up rooting for ,nobody rebels instead they just feed into the system killing them, and the ending matches that bleakness with him simply never getting off thst road, it's something with no spectacle and is just grim and that's why enjoy it and Francis Lawrence ironically considering the subject of thg books switches stuff around to increase the intestty and entertainment sooo yeah I really don't have much hope.
I gotta be honest. I have very very little faith in Francis Lawrence's ability to adapt The Long Walk in a way that correctly captures the book. Maybe that's unfair, because its based entirely off my general dislike of the hunger games movies (aside from Catching Fire).
Its not a fair comparison but I have always compared THG books in my head to TLW. I know the comparison thats more common is Battle Royale, but for some reason the comparison just doesn't hold up the same for me. Maybe because I only ever watched the movie version.
The target audiences for THG and TLW are obviously different. THGs are YA, and were expected to be read by people around the same age as the protagonists. So it makes sense that despite the horrific subject matter, the version of the "death games" we get is highly sanitized.
So it's really not the fault of the movies that they took something already quite clean and palatable (again, considering the subject matter) and made it even easier to watch.
I am aware it's unfair to hold Francis Lawrence accountable for that.
And yet these movies are really my only frame of reference for his work, so I am concerned.
The Long Walk is probably the opposite of The Hunger Games in most ways. They're about the same subject essentially, and making points that are well aligned (the senseless nature of death and war, the horror of imperialism and a militarized society, the way said societies use propaganda to valorize its atrocities in the eyes of its citizens, etc) but where THG focuses on spectacle and entertainment (both in its subject matter and the style of the books) TLW strips everything away.
The idea of entertainment is there but without any of the showmanship and "glamour" of THG. Even the nature of the death "game" is so passive and bleak. There's no fighting for survival, killing people and running and action. It's just teenagers walking until they're all dead. That's it, that's the whole book.
Its bleak and despairing and hopeless and awful. There's no dignity to it. They don't get breaks to go the bathroom (and this is confronted graphically in the book) and they don't stop to sleep or eat. They just walk and walk and walk. There's no point to it. There's no reason.
In THG, all of our protagonists are forced to be there. Essentially everyone in the games is, aside from the careers who volunteer. And they did it for glory and fame, because they think they have a shot at winning.
Everyone in TLW volunteered. Their reasons are varied, but there's like what, 100 of them (i can't recall) and only a few are discussed at having signed up because they think they can actually win (and this is met with incredulity from everyone else).
The movie will obviously be different from the book. It will probably include a lot of flashbacks as we learn everyone's stories (which just makes sense, that's just the way the medium goes, it would be weird if they didn't do that) which will help break up the depressing "guys walking until they're mostly all dead" thing. And they didn't cast actual teenagers (which again is understandable, both in terms "that would make it so much harder to watch Jesus christ" and also "child actors have much stricter rules about how long they can work that film sets really prefer not to deal with if they don't have to" sort of way).
I've heard the ending is different but not how (don't want spoilers) but again, of COURSE it is. Everyone gives Stephen King crap for his endings, but TLW is in my mind the worst culprit (but interestingly i think its bad in the opposite way that most of his other endings are bad). Has any SK adaptation ever kept the original ending intact? I can't remember.
Still. All these changes already add up, and i just don't have enough faith in Francis Lawrence to compensate.
I do hope my concerns are misplaced. But honestly, truly bleak cinema does not capture American audiences. I was dead on about how the American remake of "Speak No Evil" would change things and while I dont think TLW will be that egregious in its changes... I don't think it'll get it quite right, either.
As usual I would love to be proved wrong.
