1. The infographic I chose displayed a recipe for a cocktail drink. I think the underlying agenda here was to keep things simple and easy to understand hence why they had used simple, heavy lines with a light choice of typography.
2. I picked the Macy’s logo which almost every American is able to recognize. I think the brand achieved consistency by the red color choice and the simple red star. I like this logo because it proves that you don’t have to go above and beyond to be memorable.

1. This cigarette ad has an example of texture through the mountains that are being illustrated.
2. There is also texture in the clouds in this photograph.
3. There is different scale levels in this ad where the product is front and center while the the aloe vera is behind it to emphasize the tropical esthetic of the company. There is also a weight that is heavier in ALOE VERA on the top to make this part of the product stand out.
4. The spacing in “Run for the Roses” shows a cool esthetic that is more relaxed rather than it being in normal spacing.
5. This last design contains texture shown from the different sizes of the petals, spacing and rotation to create this shape.

1. This lunchables ad can be considered graphic design because it is communicating a message of “fun & natural come together”. It also uses different pictures to emphasize the feeling of ease.
2. This who travel podcast communicates a feeling without having to use to many words. The choice of typography and color also emphasize this.
3. I would consider this makeup page to be graphic design because it has a consistent color scheme while being informational.
4. This maybelline ad communicates a message by only displaying the most important information while putting the profit itself front of forward.
5. I chose this last image based off of the typography. I think the designer’s choice of splitting the color just emphasizes a sleek feeling.

Diversity in TV this Fall
Being a Korean-American female, the only instances where I have seen myself represented in television were in those cartoons that typically have the show revolved around Asian heritage. It is rare to see an Asian character being shown for who they are, not what they are. This fall, can we expect to see more minorities represented on television and other streaming services? At this point, we have put our toes in the water, but we still have a long way to go before we can submerge ourselves in a wave of diversity.
According to The Insider and Esquire, an overwhelming majority of the new tv shows that audiences are anticipating have a white male lead such as Kidding, a new show premiering on Showtime which stars Jim Carrey, a white male. Or, American Horror Story, which is premiering a new season on FX with a 95 percent white cast.
On the other hand, Hollywood has improved over the years from where it has started. For example, the tv drama This Is Us follows a family that includes an adopted son that is African American and their ways of overcoming their own battle with diversity. The Walking Dead also has a diverse range of characters that are still alive. Or even Empire, that was created and stars African Americans. But, it is rare to see these minor characters being introduced without bringing up their race.
The question of whether a minority will land a lead role in television is still remained unanswered. Yes, it has happened before, but the white to minority ratio in lead roles is significantly unequal. Through all of the new and recurring shows this fall, minorities only play minor characters and a majority of these minor characters are African American.
But, the issue of colorism is still prevalent in 2018. Colorism is the discrimination against an individual with a deeper skin tone. This issue is not as quite common against African American men as much as it is common for African American women. This fall, it is seemingly improving as shows like How to Get Away with Murder stars Viola Davis, a darker skinned black woman is returning.
But, this issue is not just black and white. The representation of other minorities such as Asians, Hispanics, Muslims, or even the LGBT community are rarely represented in today’s television networks. The moments when people of color are represented in television are when the show revolves around their ethnicity and culture. It is a great opportunity for minorities to be able to show off their culture, but that’s not all we are.
Like myself, I was born and raised in American suburbia. I am proud of my Korean culture, but all of who I am is influenced by Americans. I would love to see an Asian American female being represented in television where it is not just about what it’s like to be Asian. I experience the same struggles as my white, American colleagues.
If you were to look back 10 years ago and see what Hollywood has come to now, you would see a tremendous difference in representation in television. But, 10 years is way too long for minorities to have to wait to see themselves on the tv screen. Every change we make towards diversity is progress towards the end goal. But, will we have to wait another 10 years to see our current America in tv?
