i was recently struck with a disease that makes me want to draw a bass.

i've been reading back my old tumblr posts and came across this from 2022, honestly i spilled this is one of my better takes and i still stand by it, also i decided to slightly change some wording and repost it because that's how proud i am of it LOL

opinion: Lillie's and Gladion's endings in SM are not well written at all.

to start off with Lillie, she leaves Alola to accompany Lusamine to Kanto -- having her feel obligated to watch and help her abuser recover, even leaving her found family and beloved region in doing so, kind of goes against her entire arc of breaking free from said abuser's control. why is she still tied to her? it may be realistic for a young girl to want and "save" her mother but that in no way means it was a good message to send to other kids playing the game + pokemon sun and moon isn't real life, the plot and the characters there are all tools that help strengthen the message of the story that the writers wanted to tell.

Lillie can forgive her mother all she wants, i find no issue with that, and seeing how Gamefreak seemingly wants to paint Lusamine as redeemable even in SM (read one of my previous posts for an explanation, however i feel like they could've done a much better job in making her more redeemable) i wouldn't be surprised if she does attempt to mend her relationship with her kids after she recovers; but why do her children need to be there and help her? they don't own her anything, SHE is the one who must own up to her mistakes and she is the one who is responsible for putting in the work to rebuild broken bonds.

this whole situation feels anathema to Lillie's arc of leaving her mother's shadow and finally gaining autonomy, especially since she ends up abandoning the people who ACTUALLY cared for her (Kukui and Burnet) + the person who inspires her to stand up for herself in the first place (the player). in my opinion it would've been a better ending had she forgiven her mother, acknowledge that she is no longer of her concern, stay in Alola doing the island challenge and then finally challenge us for the throne in a Title Defense; not only does this show Lillie as a fully-fledged trainer who's evolved and has a better relationship with battles (after being influenced by her journey with the player) but it also solidifies the fact that she is no longer in Lusamine's control -- and if she does want to improve her relationship with her mother then she can wait until she actually recovers from the neurotoxins and is back in mental clarity.

getting to Gladion, it baffles me how he decides to seemingly "fix Lusamine's mistakes" by taking over as President of the Foundation... even though he stated that he wanted to get as far away from it as possible? why are you bringing this upon yourself when Wicke, someone who is much more qualified for that position, is right there? Gladion is not responsible for whatever adversities Lusamine caused in her Foundation, i think a much better ending would be him just continuing his path as a Trainer and helping his sister through the island challenge -- this helps improve their distant relationship and breaks any ties Gladion has with his mother. i do think it's possible for Gladion to become the President in the far future, but as of now it literally makes no sense for him to take over Lusamine's role.

just so you know, i feel like Gladion would be willing to forgive Lusamine too, and i don't mind if that actually happened; however Lusamine is the one who must fix her own wrongdoings and mend her relationship with her kids, assuming they'd both want her back in their lives (because forgiveness =/= allowing someone back to your life, however i feel like both siblings would given they understand why Lusamine became that way and has expressed sympathy for her), her kids don't need to do anything (except have patience i guess).

The bios of the Aether Foundation.

Y'know, Faba was portrayed in a pretty incel-ish way in the Adventures SM arc. He pushed Mohn into an ultra wormhole in an attempt to kill him, tried comforting the widow Lusamine and was enraged when she pulled away from him, conspiring to ruin her life and the lives of her kids, and was the one who orchestrated her descent to madness.

Considering what this says, it adds context to his portrayal there.

It wouldn't surprise me that after they watched Ash compete in the Master Tournament, some decided to go out and see the world.

I see Gladion being one, especially since that's what happened at the end of USUM.

Wanting to get stronger and battle new people who are stronger than the ones in Alola.

And there aren't much trainers in Alola that were shown to have a full team aside Kukui and Lusamine

random things i dislike about how fans (mis)characterize lillie and gladion

this is a messy post so sorry about that and i made like 2 other posts similar to this on my profile if you scroll down

1. Lillie hating her mother. bruh i have no idea why people think this and they go ahead and draw art of her following this belief (like when people drew her in the cover of the book "Im Glad My Mom Died") LIKE LILLIE LITERALLY WANTS TO HELP LUSAMINE RECOVER AT THE END OF THE STORY???? SHE LITERALLY FORGIVES HER AND FOLLOWS HER THERE???? AND DID PEOPLE JUST FORGET THE EXEGGUTOR ISLAND SCENE??? god this mischaracterization is so bad because Lillie obviously does not hate her, i have my issues with Lillie following Lusamine to Kanto but i do think that she does genuinely love her mother because she sympathizes with the bad things that happened to her and she wants her to be given a chance to work to become a better person, but so many people just. make things up about Lillie which just doesn't fit in with her actual character, having headcanons is one thing but when the headcanon fundamentally mischaracterizes an important and obvious trait, expect people to say something about it

2. Gladion hating his mother. this happens more often and it pisses me off even more because Gladion's my favourite character and people are just diluting him to his "angsty aggressive" traits and generalizing his hatred of the harshness of this world to his mother. certainly he doesn't have a good relationship with her, to the point that he actively calls Lusamine "the president" instead of accepting her title as his mother, yet in every single universe he is shown to be a kind-hearted boy who is just frustrated at his circumstances, like he literally defends her reputation by acknowledging that the UBs made her fall from grace (especially in the manga, where he doesn't want ppl to think she's evil). he consistently puts his family over himself first, even if it comes at the cost of his own well-being, because he understands why Lusamine is the way she is and he's hurt by her and he wished this never happened and just like Lillie he wants to be a family with her again which is why he wrote that letter to her at the end of SM.

Gladion is not cruel and filled with grudges and heartless, he is kind and forgiving and this is consistently shown again and again but people refuse to see past his rather angsty and reserved demeanour and focus on his most surface level traits (which are also mischaracterized so he can fit into the neat box of some "edgelord angsty teenage boy" trope). he does not hate his mother. i repeat he does not hate his mother. he's saddened at the circumstances that caused her to turn into how she is now, and he is hesitant to fully trust her, yet it is with his acknowledgement of how this happened that he can't help but sympathize with Lusamine because he knows she didn't want this to happen either. my opinion on the aether family and their writing has slightly shifted over time, but i still belief that generally this family has nuance and doesn't have a clean neatly-tied ending where the big bad evil person is defeated and everyone who suffered is happy again

^^i think people mischaracterize the siblings this way because they too have abusive parents and find comfort in seeing fictional characters have a similar parent, and while their feelings are valid, the way they respond to the actions of their parents is certainly not the same as how the aether siblings responded to it, the canon source material is there and the fact they responded differently doesn't make the story automatically bad, or should be twisted in a way that disregards the actual context that takes place in the story. (to an extent i feel like the SM writers should've been more careful with the implications they signalled when the abused daughter who was supposed to be free from her abuser ended up following the abuser to help her recover, since this is a kid's story after all, but again i don't want people to think that there's only one correct way to react to abuse [aka their way] and every other way is deemed invalid)

3. Gladion being angsty. well he is angsty but not in a show-off over the top kind of way that many people portray, he's the quieter kind of angst who keeps these feelings to himself because he doesn't like attention and he's just trying to juggle his feelings in a world that he's frustrated and angry with because of how it treated him. he's a hurt boy who had to take matters to his own hands (even though he shouldn't need to, as he's a child) and despite how the world has consistently treated him he still shows the strength to be kind and forgiving and he apologizes when he directs his anger wrongfully and he's just trying to navigate the world while holding out hope in regards to his mother, even when everything else brings him down (cue the "lets bury our sorrow in the crowd" line). again his most obvious act of kindness is saving silvally from the aether foundation (which was what motivated him to leave in the first place), then wanting to protect his sister after the guilt of leaving her behind, and then wanting to sympathise with his mother for the unfortunate things that happened to her which resulted in her becoming the way she was. i just feel like gladion is more complex than people give him credit for

i really need to yap more on the aether family ESPECIALLY gladion, i feel like some of my older yap posts are a little bit outdated since my opinions changed slightly, but i still like to talk about the aether family because exploring their dynamics and their story of abuse and family is just really interesting imo

this is such a brilliant idea, especially considering that Lusamine already lost her husband because of an ultra wormhole, and depending on which Lusamine you wanna use (SM or USUM) imagine if she came back to Alola after recovering/has finally accepted that Mohn will never be able to remember her, just for her to then lose her son 💀💀💀

hoping that they send gladion back in time for plza the way they did with ingo for pla so that when people draw all of the angsty drawings about how much his family and friends miss him theres gonna be artwork of his zoroark/silvally doing this

all in all i really liked this event !! i'm happy that whenever DeNA writes stories with Gladion at the forefront, they end up being more fleshed out instead of the typical "shallow friendship" stories they usually make, i suppose this says a lot about gladion's character as a whole 👏

random dump on some scenes in the event:

i love when he said get lost to colress LOL i know it's part of his character to be blunt but i didn't expect that to be his response 💀

so did lear not host a party at all and lusamine just asked to borrow his manor as part of her plan??? either way she's clearly rich enough to make such a demand 💀💀

i know a lot of us were shocked to see gladion pair up with magearna of all mons, but it honestly makes PERFECT sense 😭 it's an artificial pokemon who loves to be researched upon and gladion fears it will end up being alone because of this, THIS EXACTLY PARALLELS SILVALLY 😭😭😭 his sense of justice and moral compass is so strong like this fits his character perfectly he just doesn't want magearna to suffer a similar fate

cool to see that his "sygna suit" was really just a fancy outfit he had to wear for the event and was not modelled specifically after magearna, but i guess we can headcanon that lusamine tailored that suit for him as part of her plan lol

also i honestly loved to see that gladion is capable of being formal when he has to LOL i know a lot of people object the idea of him becoming aether president but i personally dig the idea, regardless what people think happened between him and lusamine i feel like taking a job where he gets to care for pokemon and research them ethically (in a way he thinks is right) is a perfect fit for his character

^ to add a bit to this, i also like when he can just act like a rich kid with manners when he needs to, but the second someone acts against his morals he just goes back to being stubborn and brash 😭 all this fits my headcanon that sometimes he helps out his mom with aether foundation work by travelling to different regions to care for pokemon/assist pokemon professors, etc + my headcanon of him being able to speak more "proper" when needed IS NO LONGER JUST A HEADCANON 🎉🎉🎉

i LOVE when he has nice interactions with his family, especially his mom 😭 definitely a hot take but i'm perfectly fine with lusamine repairing her bond with her kids, the SM USUM timeline stuff is a bit messy but in my opinion i prefer when after she recovers from the neurotoxins shenanigans she earnestly works to fix her relationship with her kids, because i personally believe that even in SM she was supposed to be redeemable--not because "she deserves it", but because her being redeemed could strengthen the story's message about navigating a tragic family and fall from grace, ofc this depends on your interpretation on these events in the first place but i always felt like a happier ending was better suited for the aether family (i made another post abt this a while back lol... might rewrite it again)

also gladion calls her mom while lillie is more formal and says mother right??

to sum it up i love this story because everything abt gladion is true to character + his motivations for wanting to care for magearna are perfect + i love the little things they added to his character esp for confirming my headcanon + more interactions with his family + not like DeNA's typical "friendship" stories + IT FINALLY GIVES GLADION THE SCREENTIME IT DESERVES EVEN IF THIS EVENT FEELS A BIT SHORTER THAN OTHERS 😭😭😭🎉🎉🎉💗💗💗
