I had scholarships and worked my way through college. I also had no health coverage as a university student. Planned Parenthood (PP) provided me with low-cost exams and birth control pills. Today I donated to my local PP to help women who are in a myriad of situations and are wanting to take responsibility for their health. Gestational responsibilities fall entirely upon women: housing the fetus, eating for 2, prenatal vitamins, doctor visits, numerous ultrasound visits in the last months, payment to the doctors and hospital for the hospital stay during birth, unpaid time away from work then … baby clothes, 50 to 100% physical and financial responsibility for the care or future of a newborn, daycare and educational costs for the baby, a dwelling that is safe for a child, the list goes on. It’s no easy task to be pregnant nor to raise a child. And women alone do not create a pregnancy, yet they may bear 100% of the responsibility. Things we do in our house to be more sustainable: buy 90% second hand, plant flowers for butterflies and bees every Spring, carpool when possible, bring bags to grab trash on our hikes, recycle, eat less beef, carry a Nalgene water bottle to reduce 1 time use cans / plastic bottles, use natural cleaners for body / hair / laundry / dishes / house. Thankful for this girl. I am fueled by wanting to provide her with: safe shelter, good nutrition, natural surroundings, love, fun, learning opportunities and the chance to keep the confidence which author Mary Pipher asserts can get lost as girls enter pre-teen years. She is funny, smart, athletic, creative and kind. Many children understand how to be stewards of the Earth, to perpetuate kindness to all beings, and to develop creative solutions. Before they are conditioned to be consumers, kids love outside play, getting muddy, running through the sprinklers or splashing in puddles = simplicity. We have so much to learn from them. When their basic needs are met, they can elevate to create and improve the world. On this Easter Sunday I reflect on the honor of being a mother and on maintaining a daily sense of renewal in order to guide the next inspired generation.
