Pacific Ocean Monday- Sea Otters!!!! 🦦
Tumblr media
IT’S TIMEEEEEE. SEA OTTERS ARE MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL AND I’M VERY EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT THEM FOR THE FIRST PACIFIC OCEAN MONDAY!!!!! If you want you can request sea creatures for me to make one of these posts about 💙
Scientific name: Enhydra lutris
Status: Endangered
Population: 130,000
Class: Mammal
Lifespan: 10-20 years (varies between gender, females usually live longer)
Sea otters are marine mammals found in the northern and eastern parts of the Pacific. Although they can go on land, they can live exclusively in the ocean. They prey mostly on marine invertebrates, such as mollusks and sea urchins. Sea otters eating urchins is essential in protecting kelp forests, otherwise the urchins could cause extensive damage to the kelp. When sleeping otters will hold each others paws (which is VERY CUTE) so that they don’t get separated. They may also hold onto kelp reaching the surface so that they don’t drift away from where they are. Otters are also known for using tools to assist them, when breaking food out of hard shells they will repeatedly hit the shell against a rock resting on its chest. After otter populations considerably decreased between 1741 and 1911 due to hunting for their fur, an international ban on hunting has been put in place. Though the population has gotten closer to pre-hunting numbers, they are still considered endangered due to severe declines in population in certain areas, especially around California and the Aleutian Islands. Otters are amazing 💖. Also I have an otter plushie called Peach. Okay I’m done yapping. I like otters 🦦

Indian Ocean Friday- Manta Rays! 🌊
Tumblr media
It’s time for the first Indian Ocean Friday! Today’s sea creature is the manta ray! If you want you can request sea creatures that you want me to make one of these posts about 💙. Also since tomorrow is the weekend there won’t be another one of these till Monday.
Scientific name: Mobula birostris
Status: Threatened
Population: 22,000+
Class: Chondrichthyes
Lifespan: 30-50 years
Manta rays are often found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters, and can be found in both open waters and coastal areas. Mantas are filter feeders, so they swim with their mouths open and gather large quantities of zooplankton to eat. They are one of the largest fish in the ocean, and can have a wingspan of up to 7 metres. They also have the largest brain to body weight ratio of any fish. Manta rays have markings on their underside that are unique to each individual. I once went on a snorkelling trip and there was a manta one of the guides called Poppin because it had markings shaped like Mary Poppins silhouette :) 💙

Southern Ocean Thursday- Antarctic Silverfish! 🐟
Tumblr media
Today is the first Southern Ocean Thursday! The focus of the day is Antarctic Silverfish. If you want you can request sea creatures that you want me to make one of these posts about 💙
Scientific name: Pleuragramma antarcticum
Status: Least concern
Population: Lots (I couldn’t find it)
Class: Actinopterygii
Lifespan: 20 years
Antarctic Silverfish are a species of ray-finned fish. It is one of the most numerous species in the outer waters of Antarctica. It eats plankton and is an important part of the diets of many species higher up in the food chain. Due to their dependence on sea ice, it is likely that they will be especially sensitive to aspects of climate change, and they may have a potential decrease in biomass.

Arctic Ocean Wednesday- Beluga Whales!!! 🐋
Tumblr media
It is now Arctic Ocean Wednesday for the first time EVER 🥳. Each weekday has been assigned one of the oceans, so stick around to see the rest. Today is all about beluga whales.
Scientific name: Delphinapterus leucas
Status: Near threatened
Population: 150,000+
Class: Mammals
Lifespan: 35-50 years
Belugas are very social animals that migrate and hunt in pods. They produce a combination of clicks, whistles, chirps, and squeals to communicate with each other. They are sometimes referred to as the canaries of the sea. During autumn they migrate south from the Arctic as the ice in the sea forms and changes, and then return during spring to feed. A beluga whale’s diet consists of octopus, squid, crabs, shrimp and clams, as well as a variety of fish.
