I guess it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room and ask the obvious question: Why didn’t Rose live with Pearl forever? I think there are a couple of different ways to answer that.

First of all, I don’t think that Rose ever stopped loving Pearl. I’ve always said that Pearl got it (partially) wrong in Mr. Greg. Rose didn’t choose Greg instead of Pearl. She chose Steven instead of both of them. Whatever relationship Greg had with Rose, it ended on the day Steven was born, just like Pearl’s did.

The better question is why did Rose keep having human affairs while also seeing Pearl, and one could write a whole essay about that: Rose was brash and impulsive and wanted to experience everything the earth had to offer. If seeking out those experiences hurt Pearl, Rose was too blinded by her own enthusiasm to see it.

If I had to narrow it down to just one reason though, I think that there was one thing Pearl could never give her: a partner who treated Rose like she was a normal person. As much as Rose clearly admired Pearl, and as much as they loved each other, Pearl always saw herself as subservient to Rose. When they had the opportunity to reinvent themselves as Rose Quartz and the Renegade Pearl, Pearl’s identity for herself was that of Rose’s knight: her weapon to be thrown at their enemies.

This is exactly what Pink was trying to run away from, even before she openly rebelled.

Rose wanted a lot of things: she wanted to save the earth, to save the crystal gems, to experience strange new things, but the one personal thing she wanted for herself was to be a normal person, and I think it’s entirely possible that Greg was the first person in history who treated her that way. 

The gems of Homeworld saw Pink Diamond as a godlike figure. The Crystal Gems saw Rose as a savior. The people of earth probably saw her as a combination of the two.

Greg stood on a box and DEMANDED that Rose talk to him like a real person, and that was the first time she treated their relationship with any sort of gravity.

But that brings us right back to the biggest question about Rose: why did she choose to have Steven? That is the one question that we still can’t answer about Rose. Did she simply decide to end her life because of her many failures? Did she hope or expect Steven to make up for her mistakes on some level? Was she just bored of immortality? One day we may see her explain herself, but not today.

One thing I don't often see people talk about in Steven Universe.

In the series most of Stevens powers come from a need to protect those around him. His shield, his bubble, healing spit/tears, all designed, and come from the desire to, protect those around him. With the exception of his floating which comes from a sense of joy and happiness.

In Future his new powers stem from a subconscious need to protect himself, instead of a need to protect others. He's dealing with a lot and his powers are reacting in an explosive way to keep him safe. Super speed to escape a dangerous situation, explosive screams to throw the threat away from him, and panels, thicker and stronger than his shield and bubble, to shield him from the perceived threat.

Which then makes me wonder, since Pink on Homeworld was known for destructive "temper tantrums" how often she must've felt so unsafe, scared and unhappy that her powers reacted the way Stevens do in Future.

When she became Rose Quartz she felt confident, comfortable and more safe as Rose than as Pink. She had a strong desire to protect the Earth and the Crystal Gems, developing her powers into the ones we see most in the show.

so i played GRIS this month and since i am still highly obsessed with SU with no sign of stopping, i imagined a mash between these two things. i interpreted the game like building yourself back up from sth awful, and the shape and color language reminded me of Steven Universe, so i wanted to think about that a little in art form. not to mention the game is gorgeous and i wanted to try my hand at using that style for SU fanart. the style evolved little by little as i kept drawing these :3

steven is a really funny character actually. he never went to school. one of his powers is astral projection for no real reason. hes a musical prodigy. he was so traumatized by the end of the show they had to make an entire epilogue series about it. he spent seven years looking like a 3rd grader. he was even bisexual

If Steven Universe ever returned, what is it that you want to see? Would you like a series that explores on different characters in different episodes? Much like Adventure Time in the later seasons or maybe a prequel series that explores more of the Diamonds backstory?

I've always said this is what my idea is and this Ask was my excuse to draw it finally 😂

Steven falling for every single tourist trap on his road trip without losing even an ounce of enthusiasm for any of them seems like a very Steven thing to me.
