Ain thought over Mitsutada’s words, briefly reminiscing as he mentioned “homeland.” Things were drastically different in Elrios compared to Hiraeth—he couldn’t even maintain a stable existence, making him unable to eat together with the group he traveled with. All he could do was watch as the party all told stories and laughed in unison while sitting around a campfire. They all seemed to bond closely with each other throughout their years of exploring and fighting, and the days that ended with a joyous feast that helped unwind the group’s stresses had Ain feeling left out. But he couldn’t help but blame himself for his growing feelings of loneliness.

“I guess I’ve wanted to try a few things from my homeland,” he said, tone quieter than before, “but I’m fine with anything that you make. I...just wanted to share a meal with someone.”

“There’s no need for you to be such a worrywart, Professor! I’m fine. Just a little longer, alright? I’ll be out of your way soon enough…” This was way too embarrassing. Kiretsu really regretted everything right now, and they started to reconsider their life decisions.

“I can’t help but worry, especially since you’re one of my students...” The other was cold, right? Ain was reminded about how members of the El Search Party would huddle up for warmth during chilly nights while camping out during explorations; his arms soon wrapped around Kiretsu as well, hugging him back and giving a gentle pat.

“Things were different back then, but this time I won’t hesitate to show my true strength,” he said, spear forming in his grasp. “Perhaps by showing you the Goddess’ light, you’ll change.”

Ain’s initial thought was ‘No,’ and he had to bite back the word from leaving his mouth. Though he reconsidered his words and thought about how he had been sitting alone in silence for most of the evening—there was some kind of feeling of loneliness he had, wanting to talk to someone about his day. He gestured for Mitsutada to sit next to him.

“…you won’t believe what I heard in the halls today.”

“This is supposed to be a party. You are supposed to dance, not sulk.”

Ain distanced himself from everyone; there were too many people enclosed in the area for his tastes, and he had no desire to interact with them. So naturally, he was being a wallflower.

“What benefit even is there for dancing? It looks like some inane ritual.”

“I have a few acquaintances and coworkers that I talk to…if that counts.”

He didn’t want anyone to get too attached to him, nor did he want to attach himself to anyone—there were a few perhaps that he really considered “friends,” although he was unsure of his own feelings.

Ain made some kind of motion with his arms, manifesting a semitransparent blue sword. He then held it out for Misa to take.

“In other words, please try holding this sword.”

He glanced over, realizing that Misa had slumped against his shoulder and fallen asleep. He gave a soft sigh, but he couldn’t blame her—it was nearing curfew.

Ain had barely noticed Mitsutada’s presence in the staff lounge up until the other teacher had gotten alarmingly close to where Ain was currently seated at. He looked up from the papers he was grading, furrowing his brows briefly. Something was off, he speculated; and his speculations proved to be true the moment Mitsutada’s lips had suddenly pressed against his own. It left Ain in a stupor, completely dropping all thoughts he currently had.

When the kiss had broken off, Ain stared down at the table for a few seconds while attempting to process what just happened. There was a faint scent of alcohol—and Mitsutada had suddenly kissed him.

“Are you… Are you drunk?”

29. accidental kiss

Ain made his way through the hallway seemingly in a rush, heading over to his office; he had roughly five minutes to grab the book he had forgotten in his office and return to the classroom before his second period class started. The moment he turned the corner, however, he accidentally ran into a student and started to lose his balance. He stumbled forward, shouting out a foreign word presumed to be an obscenity of sorts, and collided with a student nearby.

He closed his eyes while bracing himself for the impact, and felt his lips make contact with Izumi’s face—more specifically his cheek. He barely had time to realize what happened, because next thing Ain knew, he was atop the poor student he crashed into. He hastily got off of Izumi and rose to his feet, dusting off his attire.

“Never speak of this again,” he uttered, scurrying off to his office to hide his reddened face from students.
