I dont think anyone understands that Next To Normal's Tony performance of You Don't Know/I Am The One singlehandedly turned me into a "theater kid" and all its stereotypes.

It was a before-and-after moment. It literally altered my brain chemistry. I would genuinely not be the person I am now if it werent for that video.

I was 14 and I was tasked to direct a student production of West Side Story. At this point, I loved musicals like one loved The Sound of Music and Disney films during their childhood. I respected them and enjoyed watching them. But I had no curiousities about musical theater as an industry, as a subculture, as a Thing.

So there I was browsing stage performances on youtube, like a good student director. And I click on this Tonys video, with no context at all for what's happening.

Reader, I was stunned. I knew I just watched something electric and fucking magical. I wanted more.

(Luckily, AVMP came out the same year. I successfully direct WSS. I got a dvd copy of Rent's final cast performance. I star in our school's Wizard of Oz. And ofc, Glee came out. 2009 was a truly insane year for me and musicals.)

And now here i am 15 years later.

I'd probably be a doctor by now if I hadn't stumbled upon Next To Normal. I'd probably still be a christian too, ew.

So thank fuck for a random youtube video that gifted me with this personality and deep love for theater that continues to bring me joy. And while I do say that it was West Side Story that started it all, it was actually Next To Normal that changed everything.
