Alice in Chains was the supporting act for the tri-headlined Clash of the Titans Tour featuring Slayer, Megadeath, and Anthrax. This was the second leg, the first being a European tour supported by Testament and Suicidal Tendencies.
Alice in Chains was not originally met with cheering fans and friendly greetings, unfortunately. According to Sean Kinney, “Slayer fans were impatient, to say the least, with Alice’s deliberate, Complex arrangements, hurling verbal abuse and-in one instance-jugs of Kool-Aid at the group…That was one of our finest shows.” says Kinney, in an interview with Request’s Daina Darzin
Originally, Alice in Chains was not on the bill for the North American tour. According to Get Thrashed, the 2006 Thrash Metal Documentary, Death Angel was to be the supporting act instead. However, after a near-death bus crash, they were forced to pass on the gig; opening up the space for Alice to promote their first studio album, Facelift.

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love staying in their room at Roppongi Prince Hotel.
Tokyo, Japan.
February 19th, 1992.
5 days later they got married in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii on February 24th, 1992. Kurt turned 25 years old the day after these photos were taken.
Courtney would have been 2 months along into her pregnancy here.
Nirvana played at Nakano Sunplaza in Tokyo on the same day as these photos were taken.
Photos by Kenji Kubo who had this to say about the photoshoot —
"At that time a lot of Japanese photographers were not interested in Courtney Love but I was, her band Hole's first album was produced by Kim Gordon and I really liked Sonic Youth so for me she was important. So a lot of photographers did not want to take pictures of them together, they just wanted Kurt, but I thought they were so much in love, it is nice they are always together, it was very beautiful and they were very nice to me. Like a love story, after Japan, they went to Hawaii and got married."

Track seven of Hole's sophomore album, Live Through This (1994), "Credit in the Straight World" is a song dating back to the European post-punk movement in the 80s. The Young Marble Giants debuted this song in their 1980 album Colossal Youth. In addition to changing a few words in the song, Courtney Love added a haunting original introduction (excerpt above). Hole also does the song in a much harder, explosive way. Playing with the building up and crashing down of suspense. Kurt and Courtney alike were both allegedly fans of the Young Marble Giants despite their short-lived career as a band.

Hedgehog in The Fog, Yuri Norstein, 1975.
<3
little Russian cartoon gem I found today. I know this is totally different than my usual content but I hope some of you enjoy old cartoons/stop motion as much as I do.
This video nearly brought me to tears despite its short 9 min. duration. The musical accompaniment along with the art style of the video, the dialogue of the Hedgehog and overall theme of fearing the unknown while still being drawn to it is so beautiful.
Check it out <3

ⲯ﹍աɦɛʀɛ ɖɨɖ ʏօʊ ֆʟɛɛք ʟǟֆȶ ռɨɢɦȶ ﹍ⲯ__︿﹍☼
★ “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” also known as “In The Pines'' dates back to the 1800’s. However, it was first recorded in 1926 by banjo player Dock Walsh. Then by Bill Monroe in 1941, and Lead Belly in 1944.
★ The blues tune recounts a story of domestic deceit and perhaps murder. Betrayed by his wife possesses this man, and in a rage he stumbles into the cold night to seek revenge. The man is then killed, accidently or by murder; it’s still up to debate.
★ Kurt Cobain was introduced to this song by colleague and friend Mark Lanegan, the vocalist for the Seattle band The Screaming Trees. They spent a lot of time together due to Kurt staying with Lanegan for days on end. They would bond over blues records they both adored. One day in 1989, while listening to Lead Belly at Kurt’s place, they came up with the idea to do a record of all Lead Belly covers.

★ However, with the mutual respect they shared, it was difficult for either one of them to take control. However, one surviving take of the lost project would make in on Mark Lanegan’s solo album, The Winding Sheet (1990) in Mark’s words, "[We] ended up using a recording of one of the heavier songs from our aborted Lead Belly record, 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?,'" Lanegan wrote in his memoir, "an acoustic tune Kurt had electrified, which had compelled me to take my performance into the familiar rock territory of the Trees, doubling my voice to harmonize with myself and singing the last couple verses in the very utmost registers of my limited vocal range."
★ Kurt sings backup and plays guitar as well as Krist Novaselic on bass and the drummer of The Screaming Trees.
★ Dave Grohl has been vocal about the influence Lanegan had on the 1993 Nirvana MTV Unplugged Concert; even referring The Winding Sheet as “one of the best albums of all time”
★Nirvana performed the song in the 1990s a few times. Their version is based on Lead Belly’s 1944 Musicraft 78 RPM version. Lanegan commented on the Unplugged performance of the song,“His version of that song is the definitive version — it blows mine away…One of the coolest things that ever came from hanging with Kurt was just sitting in his shed and hearing him play acoustic guitar and singing. It was so soulful and real, it gave me the chills."
★A single of Pennyroyal Tea, set to be released in 1994 included, on the b-side of the record, a Lead Belly track, however it was canceled following Kurt's death later that year.

Alice in chains performing at off the ramp in Seattle, WA, February 1991 (2/25/91)
SAP
Late in 1991 Alice released a mostly acoustic EP called Sap. The release was inspired, Cantrell revealed, "by a dream (Sean) Kinney had. He actually dreamed that we put these three songs on an EP and called it Sap. he saw us talking about it at a press conference and saw it doing really well.” The realization of the dream, Cantrell added, “came together so smoothly, it’s almost scary.”
Sap features appearances by venerable Seattle rock bands Heart, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney and one noisy cut called “Love Song” on which Alice’s members switched instruments.
SAP also marks Jerry's debut singing lead. Encouraged by Layne to start singing lead on the songs he works so hard on to write, Jerry sang lead on the song “Brother.”

"Again"
off their self-titled 1995 album, Again was the sixth track and third single released. The song achieved recognition and general praise including a 1997 Grammy nomination for best hard rock performance. Unfortunately, the song is known to have only been performed live up to 5 times with the original vocals of Layne.
The music video, directed by Layne Staley and George Vail, released in March of 1996. The video was nominated for MTV Music Awards’ Best Hard Rock Video of the year. It would be the final music video filmed with Layne Staley.
To me, the song has always reminded me of the predictability of violation. My favorite part (besides the all-consuming holler where Layne changes notes mid scream, transitioning the song into a new melody) is the little ‘Doot Doot’ harmony between Layne and Jerry. I’m not sure what it reminds me of, but definitely something I’d expect from a song of a different genre.
