The Ouija Effect
The Ouija Effect
Halloween night, the scariest night of the year and everyone at school was excited to go trick-or-treating. But David, an eleven-year-old boy, and his friends were excited for a different reason. They were going to the abandoned mansion in the woods. Legend has it that a man, Erik, was possessed the night before Halloween. At midnight on the dot, he went to the shed and took out an axe. He killed his wife, Jean, his seven-year-old daughter, Shelby and his two-year-old daughter, Jamie. Then he killed himself. Every year on Halloween night you can hear the screams of his family, and the chopping of the axe. Halloween Day all the kids were excited to go trick-or-treating but David’s clique, which consisted of Ramon, his best friend; Violet; and Fleur, who was a foreign exchange student from France, and himself were excited for a different reason. Tonight was the night they were going to the murder mansion, and David was bringing an Ouija Board. He knew of the danger of the board, but it was all for fun; nothing could really happen, right? As the group was approaching the murder mansion, they were on high alert and were all a little spooked, but no one dared say anything risking the chance of being called a scaredy-cat. Everything seemed so gray and cold that day. Big gray clouds filled the sky, and the wind was starting to pick up. They slowly crept their way up to the double wooden door of the mansion. David hesitated; he pressed on the door with all his might and the door slowly opened as the old rusty, hinges creaked, setting an eerie mood. A gust of cold air made the hair on David's neck stand up. Ramon took out his flashlight and shined it into the mansion. The floor was concrete. There was an old oriental rug which was covered in dust and made the pattern barely visible. Behind it was a velvet sofa which was caked with dust thus dulling the color. In front of the rug was a brick fireplace which still had old logs in it that had barely been burned. Ramon took the first step into the mansion, sending a storm of dust into the air, which soon disappeared into the dark shadows of the mansion. With every step they took, the dust whipped up and settled to be whipped up again. David brought a backpack with the board, a couple of towels, and batteries. He took the towels out and sat them on the ground so they wouldn't get dust on everything. Violet, for the first time on this trip, asked what we were going to do. David thought this would be the perfect time to take out the Ouija Board. “I’ve got just the thing,” David said, just a little too excited. He took out the Ouija Board and set it in the middle of the group. Fleur and Violet looked at him like he was crazy but Ramon looked excited. “The rules are simple,” said David, “First, never play alone. Second, never play in a cemetery. Third, always sa--.” He was cut off by the sound of Fleur screaming. Everyone turned around and shined their flashlights towards Fleur. Out of the corner of Violet’s eye, she saw a shadow moving. She didn’t say anything and kept looking with the rest of the group. After fifteen minutes of pure terror, they all sat down on the towels again and started to play. They each put two fingers on the planchette, a triangle shaped piece with a piece of glass in the middle, which was centered in the middle of the board. “Is anyone here?” they nervously chanted together. The planchette slowly slid across the board, and with every inch the heartbeats of each of the children got faster and faster. Pure terror was clawing its way out of everyone's chest. The planchette stopped on “Yes.” “What is, or was your name?” asked Ramon. The planchette moved to the J.E.A.N. “Jean!” shouted Violet. “Jean, okay, just because it’s name of one of the people killed in this house doesn't mean anything. How did you die?” asked Violet. The planchette moved to M.U.R.D.E.R. “M-murder?” stuttered David. A loud crashing sound was heard from upstairs. Then came a faint woman screaming. Followed by a dragging sound, almost like something was being pulled across the ground. Finally, there was a loud thump, thump, thump, coming down the stairs. Then, just as quickly as it came, the sounds stopped. The kids continued on with the Ouija Board as if nothing had happened, but it was still stuck in the minds of everyone in the mansion, and it stayed there for a long while. “Are there any other spirits here?” asked David. A child's voice whispered in the silence of the mansion, “I am.” Everyone jumped and looked around for the voice they had heard. Out of the same corner the voice came from, there was a child’s desperate scream and then a slashing sound, like an axe to wood. The scream faltered and went dead. Everyone looked down at the Ouija Board and saw the planchette was moving all by itself. It moved to H.E.L.P. M.E. and then stopped. A shadow moved across the room. It looked like a man holding an axe. A thin line was being drawn in the dust, separating a set of footprints. The sound of the axe dragging on the concrete floor were like nails to a chalkboard, sending chills down the spines of everyone who heard it. With each inch the axe dragged, the sound got louder and louder like the cries of the innocent children killed in this house. Violet was starting to cry, saying she wanted to go home and that she was too scared. We convinced her to stay, holding her hands when they turned ice cold. Her hands were turning pale, running up her arms like a white storm cloud sweeping over her until her entire body was pale. Blood was pouring out of her neck and over her entire body staining her cold, dead skin. She fell backward into the dust sending up a tsunami-like wave occluding everyone's vision. A malicious laugh boomed throughout the house and echoed off every wall. When the dust settled, Violet’s lifeless body was on the cold floor in a pool of her blood. Fleur starting crying. They all rushed to the open double doors of the mansion. So close to freedom, they could feel the outside world, the atmosphere changing. It all came to an abrupt stop when the doors slammed shut, sending echoes throughout the house. They pushed on the door with all their might, but it didn’t budge. Footsteps inched their way over to David. David’s eyes rolled back into his head and became white. He was standing still. He started to lift off the ground, hovering about five inches off the ground. He slowly moved toward Fleur, not touching the ground. He slowly hovered his way to Fleur not touching the ground. In a loud whisper he said, “You’re next,”. Fleur instantly went cold, and ran into Ramon who was just as scared as she was. David vanished into a black smoke. Ramon and Fleur walked over the board and decided to ask one more question. “Why are you doing this to us?” Fleur half screamed and half sobbed. A man’s voice boomed throughout the house, “Because it’s fun!” A cold wind rushed to Fleur, almost knocking her down. The presence picked her up by her sweatshirt and flung her into the wall leaving her lifeless. Ramon was the only one left, and he knew he wasn't leaving. What used to be David appeared behind him. “Don’t worry, you’ll be with us soon.” he whispered Ramon slowly turned around crying. “Make it quick!” he pleaded. Ramon fell to his knees, his face pulverized, beaten in with a bat. What was left of David grabbed an axe and with one powerful swing chopped the Ouija Board in half, allowing the evil trapped inside to be released into the outside world.
