Catching up on Re: Dracula and I noticed that Dracula didn’t read the intercepted letters before making a show of opening them in front of Jonathan. He then is taken off guard by the one in shorthand, and infuriated by it.

I think he wasn’t planning on punishing Jonathan by taking all his things before opening that letter. It felt like he was all geared up to have his own sadistic fun at Jonathan’s expense, relying on the fear of being caught out to keep Jonathan trapped and helpless, only to realize there’s something he doesn’t understand. He is confronted with the fact he underestimated Jonathan, and oh how he hates it!

But does he learn from it? Not in the least. His security is in his superiority, and all he can do is lash out at anyone he feels threatened by. He doesn’t expect Jonathan to react to being crushed down with increasing desperation. He doesn’t realize that a wounded prey animal when cornered can turn from plaything to fatal.

This trait remains with Dracula through the end, and it will be his undoing.
