Started reading Jekyll and Hyde today, this is peak fiction, was NOBODY really gonna tell me that people straight up think that Hyde's either blackmailing Jekyll for being homosexual or is Jekyll's sugar baby??? Absolutely amazing, 10/10, give me 14 of these rn and I'm so glad I got the clothbound copy since it explains the historical context of blackmail and homosexuality at that time

For my "From the desk of" posts, I've decided to use cursive for Jekyll and quote for Hyde as a default, by the post will say if the handwriting belongs to someone else.

From the desk of Henry Jekyll
[An exchange between the doctor's scrawl and handwriting of a different slant, tucked deep in a locked desk drawer. # indicates a section of seemingly intentionally scratched out text.]
I swear to fuck### Christ, don't forget to mix additional draught.
I dislike your turns of phrase.
I dislike your face.

What’s your favorite adaptation of J&H?
Great question! I don't know that I have a singular favourite, so I'll just ramble about a few notable ones.
Minor spoilers but just notes about aspects I liked and nothing big, as long as you're familiar with the general concept
I am of course quite fond of the original novel (1886). It started it all and was well written and a good read. And of course, the undisputed best line of "If he be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek." Pop off Utterson.
I feel like I have to give a shout out to the 1912 short film because it's impressive to me that there's a film adaptation that old, as that's toward the start of films in general. It's 12 minutes, it's online free, it feels like a lab safety sketch, good little watch.
I really enjoyed the 1968 movie and thought it was a good portrayal. I liked that we got to see a nice and charismatic side of Hyde before he became really abusive (I'm a fan of more nuanced presentations over ones that treat it like a purely good vs evil monster movie). I liked that it kept some aspects of mystery and that it was fairly true to the book.
Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971). Hyde is a woman and a girlboss, what more do I need to say. I support her wrongs.
I adore the songs from the musical. Unfortunately some of my favourites from the album seem to not be in the actual play, but I am a theatre kid and love me a good musical.
Mary Reilly (1996) was the first film adaptation I saw so I'm partial to it. Good sense of mystery about the situation since it's from the perspective of one of his maids.
I'm also a fan of the 2015 series. Definitely very different to the book and follows his grandson so it's different characters/story, but I found it to be a very enjoyable series. I'm very upset that it's only one season, particularly given how the first season ends. I hc Hils as trans and you can't change my mind.
I'm fond of a lot of different aspects of different depictions so it's hard to pick a singular favourite. There are more that I've seen that I enjoyed that I may do specific review posts of later, as well as more detailed thoughts on these, but that's an overview of some of my highlights, and some recommendations if you aren't familiar with these

Introduction
Welcome :)
I'm a person that enjoys the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a normal amount (if of course, your measure of normal is among people that are incredibly abnormally excited about it). I plan on using this blog for general Jekyll and Hyde thoughts, writings, headcanons, etc. I plan on having a couple common tags of "from the desk of [character]" with incorrect quotes or writing snippets as though these are notes left on their desk, or just things the characters would write/say. I may also include my reviews of various depictions of Jekyll and Hyde, as I have seen ones from every decade since the 1910s and fancy myself reasonably well versed. Note: This is not a roleplay account, it's more of a writing experiment What does that mean? Don't: Ask to roleplay with me Do: Feel free to comment on my posts with how you think the characters would react, including continuing them into incorrect quotes, feel free to send me asks about what I think the characters would like/do in certain situations/etc. Also feel free to use any of my posts for writing/fanart prompts etc, but I would like to be tagged so I can see them :)
With that, welcome to the Strange Blog of...
