Something about Jekyll and Hyde to me is everyones so focused on Hyde instead of Jekyll

Like whenever people bring up Jekyll and Hyde it's to make a point like "oh so-and-so has an evil side, like Mr Hyde!!!!"

And I gotta say, Dr Henry Jekyll is a renowned scientist who donates to charity and make incredible scientific breakthroughs. This man proved the existence of the human soul, and then split it. Not to mention created a reliable form of shapeshifting

He's pushing the fields of theology, biology, psychology and his research could change the world forever if he went public with it

Meanwhile Edward Hyde is some guy

Like okay he killed someone does he want a prize?? who cares

kinda fucked up that nobody noticed anything wrong with jekyll up until he locked himself up in the lab

heck, mr utterson didnt even know about hyde up until enfield's story. before that, he was just a nobody who suddenly came up in jekyll's will

and lanyon didnt even know that hyde existed

and i dont think jekyll has any family members to check up on him, other than poole and the other servants

i wonder what they were thinking when jekyll locked himself in the lab, experimenting on countless animals, hearing their cries throughout the night

or when jekyll started locking his bedroom door

or when he started to sleep in during the day

or when hyde started going into his house at night like he owns it

or when he attends less parties and gatherings because he says he's too tired or busy

or when he's starting to drift away from his friends at work

or when he doesnt go to work everyday like he used to

its so wild that the person who actually says anything about this whole situation is mr utterson

Ironic then too, that they arguably burn out too fast and die too soon. Hyde was a man built to burn fast and bright, not long and steady. Perhaps Jekyll always was too. But they wouldn't have survived without each other, or at least they wouldn't have truly Lived.

I would like to think that Jekyll and Hyde love each other the way a candle loves its wick. (Henry "I have more than a father's interest in him" Jekyll would admit this, Edward "more than a son's indifference" Hyde would not, but they need and destroy each other the same).

A candle without a wick isn't really a candle, and it's useless. Yet the wick is the very thing that destroys the candle. The wick is what gives it its function and identity but also the thing that seals its demise in the end. It is essential and purpose-giving but inherently self destructive.

A candle without a wick has no function, but survives. It lacks that which gives it purpose, yet that keeps it from destroying itself. But for what? It preserves but can do nothing, bring no light, no warmth, it just survives longer.

Sometimes you have to burn. It will be temporary but it will be bright. After all, what good is a candle with no wick?

That's how I believe they feel about each other. Despised and essential. A face they scream at in the mirror but a hand they hold in the dark. A candle burning from the wick the only way it can function and the only way it knows. Inseparable. Doomed.

If it worked for Robert Louis Stevenson AND Henry Jekyll... I mean Jekyll did some mystery drugs and became a pioneer in medicine! He did also have his life spiral widely out of control and die but... It's only science if it's replicable, why don't we fuck around and find out, you know, for science? /j

I'm sure the consequences were unrelated, Edward Hyde is such a different person to Henry Jekyll of course, it's inconceivable that the two could be connected.

It will always be wild to me that Robert Louis Stevenson was literally just a little guy on crack and his stories basically invented entire genres and tropes.

so if you’ve been on my blog before, you’d see that my design of Hyde wears a lot of green. Why does this matter? Because it wasn’t until 10 MONTHS AFTER i first designed Hyde did it occur to me that the victorians used poison in EVERYTHING such as dye,

more notably,

GREEN dye.

Now i have this hc in my head that when Jekyll first transforms into Hyde, Hyde is perfectly healthy. He doesn’t have any chronic pain or aching, he’s just a young, healthy man.

But over time, the effects of the arsenic in his clothes (his pants, his coat, hat…) start to rub off on him. He becomes paler, his eyes sink in, he becomes thinner, his behaviour becomes more erratic, and his body starts to hurt.

And THATS why people have such an icky feeling about him.
