For those who aren’t yet aware, Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual assault and misconduct by two young women earlier this month. This blog covers the allegations themselves (which are disturbing), while acknowledging the problematic nature of the original platform, a true crime podcast with ties to the British TERF movement. We're still hoping to see some further coverage from mainstream media outlets, because this story deserves more traction and there may well be other victims who want to come forward.

This article is written by a journalist who has a background in reporting on SA and working directly with victims. She offers a well rounded perspective on the situation, and the way it's been covered. The allegations are very disturbing to read, so please take care.

My personal thoughts are below, but the important note is that I believe the victims; I hope they stay safe, are able to continue to tell their stories and that people will listen to them.

Even though I didn't really follow his personal life, there's definitely still been a fannish parasocial relationship there. I really had to sit with that, and recognize that there was the thought of "I hope it's not true." That little seed of denial that needed to be confronted and plucked out.

Since I learned about the allegations, I've really been sitting with my own reaction to it. Because honestly, this was incredibly upsetting to learn about. I've loved his works since I was a kid, I've recommended his books and adaptions to friends, and I've been very active in the GO fandom since I joined Tumblr, and have definitely gained followers/mutuals though the fandom.

I say this because I think a lot of people are going through the same thing, and maybe feel frustrated or angry or guilty about it. Like, in a way, it's grief: we've lost the creator and person we thought we had. For me, this is the one that hurt. So if you're in a similar position, we need to take care that our grief doesn't turn into denial, or willful ignorance.

I'm sure it's apparent that I'm still working through my thoughts/feelings on this, but again I think its something that needs to be addressed. So at the moment, I don't know if or how I'll be interacting with his works or connected fandoms moving forward, and I'm not going to tell anyone what I think they should do either.

What's important now is that we don't let this die or blow over. Believe the victims and uplift their stories, call for Gaiman to respond (his silence so far had been deafening), and call for news outlets that cover his works/adaptions to cover the allegations.
