Twenty five years shooting Stills for film? It seems hard to believe. My wife Susan was designing hair for film when I was shooting editorial and advertising, and suggested I shoot Stills, because it would be an opportunity to see more of each other! Well… we have only done five shows together in all that time! But it has been an amazing experience. Michael Gibson, still a brilliant Still Photographer, gave me a huge break by letting me take over a series called The Hoop Life so he could shoot a feature, and I went on from there. I have been blessed to shoot images throughout North America and even in Morocco, meeting and working with some of the most wonderful and fascinating people. I am very grateful, but I have no plans on retiring! So warm up that next twenty five year pin! I love being a photographer! Fans have been waiting all season for one little kiss… but I got to see it before them. Intimacy on set is always touchy for the Still Photographer. I have always understood that I am present because of trust and respect, something I never take for granted. The key is to never push into territory that you know will never see the light of day. Mother Daughter Best friends Working with @chy_leigh and @sadie_snow is such a treat for me! They trust me and as such are willing to take the time to shoot a set up image between scenes. If you have dug into my website at stranks.com, then you will find a “Selfies” menu in the Film section. With every Gallery shoot or creative, I end the shoot by dancing with the star. Jerry O’Connell came in for an episode of The Lake as “Gil the Thrill.” I first worked with Jerry on “Carter” and was always a little in awe of how he could make a scene so funny, and would often say, “Wait… we can make that funnier!” and he would alter it, even subtly, to make it better. I always feel so privileged to bear witness to actors working. What most people would never know is just how kind this man is; every day he comes on set, you will see him greet every crew member personally. He is one of the best. I love being a photographer! So wonderful to work with Julia Stiles on The Lake for Amazon. Seeing Julia in this dress, I knew I wanted to shoot a more editorial image in addition to the Unit Photography. It did in fact get used in Elle Canada. Every since the Bourne series, I have been impressed by Julia as a dramatic actor, but on the Lake she was doing comedy and stunts as well, and frankly blew most of us away. Working on The Way Home for Hallmark Channel has been a joy for me, and given me the massive honour of working with Andie MacDowell, and reuniting to work with Jefferson Brown. They are both hugely supportive of Stills, and were willing to spend time with me off main camera to make this portrait of them together. I came across this image of Madison Shamoun, with the light reflecting in her face as she is treading water. I don’t often have time to make photographs for myself, but have in the past explored making images that honour the Sacred Feminine. Having spent much of the autumn working with Chyler, I knew I wanted to make images that honoured the female archetype, as she seemed to be the embodiment of them at a truly visceral level. Specifically, I saw the Mystic, the Warrior, and the Lover archetypes most strongly. Chyler was very supportive of the project, and along with the exceptional talents of make up artist Patrice and hairstylist Jeanette, we spent a wonderful day pursuing these ideas. The whole process was collaborative and thrilling. These are some of my favourite images from the day, and are presented as Lover, Warrior, Mystic, and a tryptic that evolves from Lover into Warrior. What a dream team! I was so pleased to be shooting with Terry, Cameron, and Jessica at CAPIC’s Help Portrait 2022. Along with five other teams, we made over eighty five family portraits for individuals that might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience it. I haven’t worn a tux in over thirty years but I put one on last night for a huge Gala celebration hosted by IATSE 667. What a fabulous night! I loved hanging out with all my camera peeps. I was waiting approvals from the Showrunner and Director for some images we made, and was setting up the menus on my new Sony A1 when our Make Up Artist Jacquelyn Hinks made this portrait of me.
