I feel the need to point out that RWBY was never 100% Monty with Miles and Kerry just trying to carry on the show with whatever notes they found left behind.

RWBY has always been 1/3 Monty, 1/3 Miles, and 1/3 Kerry.

The entire reason Monty asked Miles and Kerry if they wanted to help him make RWBY is because he needed help with the story and creating the world of Remnant. The entire intent behind recruiting Miles and Kerry was so that the three of them could work together as a team to create RWBY!

All three of them planned years of RWBY’s story together before they even wrote the script for Volume 1!

That was the whole thing about Monty, Miles, and Kerry frequently going to IHOP to eat and discuss RWBY. They did a lot of RWBY’s planning at IHOP!

In an interview, Miles explained how he and Kerry ended up helping Monty make RWBY (skip to “When and how did RWBY start for you?”). In summary:

Monty and Kerry hung out a lot, and one day at 3 AM, Monty went to Kerry and said “I had a dream. Red, White, Black, and Yellow, it’s four girls.”

Later, Monty explained his idea to Kerry, and they began bouncing ideas around. As in, the two of them began coming up with ideas.

Exact quote: “I had been writing for Red vs Blue for a little bit and Monty and Kerry explained what they had up to that point and asked if I was interested, and was like ‘hell yeah, I’m interested’.”

From there, they started going to IHOP late at night to talk about RWBY.

Then, Miles says that his very first major contribution to the planning of RWBY was the story about the brother gods who created Humans. In fact, he said that the version we were told in Volume 4 was merely a truncated version of what he came up with. Quote:

“But I remember I went home and I was trying to sleep, and then as I dozed off, I had this idea about two brothers. It was weird, but I wrote it down. I was really excited to share it with them, so excited I couldn’t go to sleep. I drove back to the office and talked to them. Monty thought it was cool, we made some changes and messed with it some more, and that was like my first real big contribution.”

In fact, in a Pre-Volume 1 livestream, Miles describes the same exact events behind him coming up with an idea for a “big backstory thing”. It was part of a discussion in response to a question about what was the most difficult part in the writing process. You can listen to him talk about it here, and here’s my transcription of what he said:

“Yeah, it was during– We were still doing RvB10 stuff, and I remember, it was when I was staying at (*Points at Arryn*) your condo. I got home at, like, 3, and tried to go to sleep. We had just had a talk about RWBY. Yeah, I couldn’t stop thinking about stuff, and then I had this idea for this big backstory thing, and then I could not go ba– I wrote it down, and then I couldn’t go back to sleep, so I went, like, ‘Fuck it!’ So, I went back in at 3:30 and was like ‘Guys, look at this thing!’ And we all talked about it, and then we… God, I don’t, I don’t think we slept the rest of the night. We just, we, we took that and then we ran with it and, and then did more stuff, so… uuuhhmm, world-building and figuring out the rules of the universe, I think, was the really tricky part.”

And, in the interview I linked earlier, he said

“We’ve told everybody, we’ve got this show planned out for years, providing we’ll be fortunate enough to go that long.”

Under the question that asks about improving the quality of RWBY, Miles said

“We always want to write the story we want to write. We want to write the shows that we wanna watch. We have a roadmap that we’ve had since before Volume 1. There will be slight deviations, slight changes due to unforeseen circumstances, but in general we try to stick to it.”

Under the question that asks about taking over RvB vs building RWBY from the ground up, Miles said

“Monty, Kerry and I, this is the world we’ve made, and if there’s something we don’t like about it, at this point in our lives, we only have ourselves to blame.”

I just think Miles and Kerry need to be given the credit that they deserve, rather than people believing that all that’s going on is “Yeah, so, Monty came up with literally the entire story and world for the show, and he had notes he wrote down, so Miles and Kerry are using those notes and stuff.” Because that is not what’s happening. Miles and Kerry know what direction RWBY is supposed to go in because they helped come up with the story.

RWBY’s planning was a collaborative effort between Monty, Miles, and Kerry, and more people need to know this.
