Weather Front
Or maybe Storm. Instagram may have a view. As always, this draws from rather than reproduces one of the many photos I’ve taken of systems like this approaching the village. I prefer to think of it as making a painting about something, not of it. This gives me licence to deal with colours differently and here, as the painting progressed, I’ve found myself bringing out the energy of the storm in…

New work and a book
It’s been a busy time; the sort of busy that happens when you decide to make a book of your work, along with all the little pieces of text you’d applied to it. After wrestling with Word and finding nothing stayed in the same place as I changed things along the way, I went to PowerPoint, which makes slides that can be printed as a pdf – ideal for sending to a PoD publisher. Choosing a publisher…

Supra-graffiti
At least that’s what I’m calling it. Two new pieces of graffiti appeared in the underpass recently. Beautifully designed and executed in clearly defined, solid colours with terrific outlines. See how they’ve used the white to enable the black to become its own 3D edge? And it’s ideal for greenscreening. I’ve posted this locally, hoping to let the original artists know I’ve hijacked their work,…

22 carat shadows
Well, doesn’t this have potential! The gold vinyl foil is quite substantial and has will power to match so it’s quite a handful to manipulate. But, the drawing done on an A1 sheet of cartridge, I painted the outline then pressed the back of the foil (the covered part) onto the wet paint to make an outline I could follow with scissors, cut out the shadow shape, and finally stuck it onto the…

The Man Across the Hall
Image by Microsoft Designer. The man across the hall When I open my door, he shuts his, and he opens it again when mine shuts. It’s like we have a rope tied to the handles across the corridor. He creeps out when he thinks I’m not looking – but I am; I’m peeking through the spyhole I use to check who’s at the door: politicians peddling policies, Jehovah’s Witnesses peddling salvation. I invite…

Art isn't always about meaning ...
Sometimes it’s about screening. I’ve never had to hold in place a 2x4M wooden octopus but it would have been good practice for keeping upright what is now quite obviously an installation while it was pinned in place with posts and canes and lengths of wire. It looks pink in the light, and it is. An hour later it looked orange and it’s that too. My worry is that I rather enjoyed painting at…

You'll need sunglasses for this one
Aka, the VE Day painting, early iteration. The first is the original on A3 card, the second is a print on A3 cartridge. Because this will primarily appear as a moving image, I wanted lots of bright colours, hints of flags, and some wartime photos which are mostly my own family. The white areas will shortly be flowers. My next step will be to mask the coloured areas with matte varnish, fill the…

And now it's fences
I have an area at the bottom of my garden that I want to screen and also brighten up so I bought two panels of 2M x 4M bamboo along with some metal posts to keep them in place. So far so good. Ever had to wrangle a large, ill-disciplined piece of fenceage single-handed into an upright position against a garage wall? Get one end in place and the other whaa-whaas itself onto the floor, move to get…

VE Day 1945-2025
These videos, visible using the Artivive app when there is a signal, went up today in celebration of VE Day, the day that marked the end of the Second World War. You’ll see that the in-app recordings – that is, recordings made using the Artitive app which hosts the additional layers – there is more content, some of it standing out from the original flat surface. This is why, apart from being…

Reflection's Freedom
Merle was exotic, beautiful, a dancer and creature of the night whose exquisite features and soft glances drove Douglas to distraction and penetrated his soul. Sometimes she was there, fully present, alive to his senses and electrifying the very essence of him; other times he caught only glimpses of her but was drawn nevertheless to her aura and captivating sensuality. Life without her, in…
