What is Self-care?
What is self-care you may wonder? Self-care is a gift we give ourselves and others. It is an essential component of good stress management. At its simplest, self-care is the act of caring for our Self. Many of us are very good at caring for others. We feel very good about doing so and invest many hours each day and week in doing so. We even take pride in how well we care for, and are there for, those we love, whether physically, emotionally, financially, or professionally. However, when it comes to truly caring for ourselves, we often find it very difficult—seemingly unnatural, one might add. We find it difficult to find the time to commit to it on a regular basis, to get family and friends’ support, and even to figure out where to begin. I (Dana) know because I’ve also had similar feelings and experiences about taking care of my Self. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that good self-care is the foundation of, and the starting point for, transformative change in one’s life. It doesn’t matter what area of your life you’re not happy with and would like to improve, either slightly or radically. Taking better care of your Self will begin the process of positive change and eventually could lead to a transformative life change, if that is what you desire.

Benefits of good self-care
The extraordinary and surprising thing about practicing good self-care is that it doesn’t just benefit you in that one area. It often trickles over into other areas of your life (like the scattering of a flower blossom’s seeds). Before you know it, what began as a dance class to get in better shape has become a source of increased energy, new friends, and enjoyment. Perhaps you will even discover a hidden talent you never knew you had or something you now find yourself unexpectedly passionate about. That’s exciting! This in turn leads to you feeling better about your body and gaining increased confidence in your discovered abilities. Also, you will find you now have more energy, which makes keeping up with all your responsibilities a bit easier. Surprisingly, you will have the energy to begin or finally complete that project, go out with friends and socialize at night, organize your house, or play with your children more after dinner.

A good stress management practice is an act of self-care, and healthy levels of self-care act as protection against the negative effects of stress

Self-care
Self-care isn’t simply about taking a dance class or eating
healthy meals five out of seven nights. That’s a great start, however.
I consider self-care to be a long-term lifestyle approach to how you live
your life. It is something you do on a regular, consistent basis, and it
becomes an integral part of your life. It encompasses activities and habits
you do (saying no, doing something relaxing, engaging in a hobby) and
don’t do (overextending yourself, permitting others to treat you poorly,
overeating) that maintain and support your well-being.
