Got Antsy Pants? Go Fly a Kite!
We received Antsy Pants Kites in exchange for this post. All opinions and our love for family time and fun remain our own.
Antsy Pants Kites are a great way to spend time as a family and have fun.
We have had crazy weather here in Virginia. Cabin fever was becoming our norm with rain, high winds, and tornadoes. When the weather cleared one weekend, we headed to an open field and assembled our Antsy Pants kites for some fun, April is, after all, National Kite Month.
Out of the package, Antsy Pants had my husband commenting on the quality of these kites. They are made with a durable fabric, I’d say similar to a camping tent. They assemble in minutes and the string is included!
The kites are single-line and so colorful.
My children’s memory of kite flying did not have them too excited. They were much younger and they remember having to run up and down a football field trying to get their kite up. They’d turn around to admire it and it would fall from the sky.
Our experience with Antsy Pants was far different.
Granted, my teenagers could not believe kites still exist, but by the end of the afternoon, they thought it was a lot of fun and are looking forward to inviting their friends to fly kites next time.

On the afternoon we went, there was a slight breeze. The kids let out some string on their kite and walked until it was taut. I held the kite and when the breeze came by they ran and I tossed the kite into the air. It’s a large kite and brightly colored. It assembles easy, attaching just two pieces from the package. Unfortunately, my husband is not the kite flyer he led the kids to believe and one it was up, he navigated it into the trees. Here, he spent the rest of his afternoon retrieving.

It has amazing tails and is such a blissful blue. It looked really awesome in the sky and with the clouds, it was easy to imagine it was swimming in the ocean, rather than soaring in the sky.

MacKenzie was a kite flying pro! Her kite SOARED.
She, however, did not take the bands off her tails so they weren’t too impressive.
She was able to keep releasing the string and sending her Fish kite higher and higher into the sky.
We had a really fun afternoon. We didn’t miss technology. It was awesome hearing my kids cheering for each other and giving them direction, “let out the string”, “pull it towards you”. It got a little tense when they were flying them together and their strings crossed, but they laughed and made it a competition.
Antys Pants is a brand that calls upon imagination through active play. My children have loved their playset from Antsy Pants where they snapped poles together and put a cover over it for an ice cream truck.

Potentially deadly bacterium on everyone’s skin
Forget MRSA and E.coli, there’s another bacterium that is becoming increasingly dangerous due to antibiotic resistance – and it’s present on the skin of every person on the planet.
A close relative of MRSA, Staphylococcus epidermidis, is a major cause of life-threatening infections after surgery, but it is often overlooked by clinicians and scientists because it is so abundant.
Researchers from the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath warn that the threat posed by this organism should be taken more seriously and use extra precautions for those at higher risk of infection who are due to undergo surgery.
They have identified a set of 61 genes that allow this normally harmless skin bacterium to cause life-threatening illness.
They hope that by understanding why some strains of S. epidermidis cause disease in certain circumstances, they could in the future identify which patients are most at risk of infection before undergoing surgery.
They took samples from patients who suffered infections following hip or knee joint replacement and fracture fixation operations and compared them with swab samples from the skin of healthy volunteers.
They compared the genetic variation in the whole genomes of bacteria found in samples from diseased and healthy individuals. From this they identified 61 genes in the disease-causing bacteria that weren’t present in most of the healthy samples.
Surprisingly however, there was a small number of healthy individuals who were found to be carrying the more deadly form of the bacteria without knowing it.
The disease-causing genes were found to help the bacterium grow in the bloodstream, avoid the host’s immune response, make the cell surface sticky so that the organisms can form biofilms and make the bug resistant to antibiotics.
The team published their study in Nature Communications this week.
Professor Sam Sheppard, Director of Bioinformatics at the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath, led the research. He said: “Staphlococcus epidermidis is a deadly pathogen in plain sight.
“It’s always been ignored clinically because it’s frequently been assumed that it was a contaminant in lab samples or it was simply accepted as a known risk of surgery.
“Post-surgical infections can be incredibly serious and can be fatal. Infection accounts for almost a third of deaths in the UK so I believe we should be doing more to reduce the risk if we possibly can.
“If we can identify who is most at risk of infection, we can target those patients with extra hygiene precautions before they undergo surgery.”
He added: “Because the bug is so abundant, they can evolve very fast by swapping genes with each other.
“If we do nothing to control this, there’s a risk that these disease-causing genes could spread more widely, meaning post-operative infections that are resistant to antibiotics could become even more common.”
Professor Dietrich Mack, from the Bioscientia Institute for Medical Diagnostics GmbH, Germany, said: “Prosthetic joint replacement surgery helps many patients to live independent and painfree lives, but can take a catastrophic course through S. epidermidis infection.
“These infections are difficult to diagnose and there is hope that disease-associated genes may help to separate harmless skin isolates from disease-causing S. epidermidis strains in the clinical laboratory. This needs to be addressed in future studies.”

That’s my sister Jenni. She and I drove to Lexington to visit Judi, who took us to Cindy’s house to see her pink bathroom. Following that? A road trip. To see a pink bathroom. The bathroom was really quite lovely — Cindy had decorated it in a way that I describe as “timeless.” Not kitschy, although I have no problem with that whatsoever. She took this other route, mixing Victoriana, Maine pottery, delicate floral wallpaper — and even a Hello Kitty — in an eclectic mix that was … just her own. Retinal dysfunction and inflammatory signalling in age-related macular degeneration
We are looking for a highly motivated cell biologist to join a project characterizing the inflammatory pathways responsible involved in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The Dunhill Medical Trust funded research project aims to identify new molecular entities to translate into new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of dry AMD.
The project is part of the newly formed Centre of Therapeutic Innovation (BathCTI) that brings together researchers across multiple disciplines across the University of Bath (http://www.bath.ac.uk/research-centres/centre-for-therapeutic-innovation/). The MacKenzie and Watson groups are located in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology where over 90% of our research rated as world leading or internationally excellent in the 2014 REF exercise.
You will use a range of molecular techniques to understand epithelial signalling under inflammatory conditions including siRNA knockdown, protein biochemistry and fluorescent imaging, and you will have access to excellent University of Bath Facilities in fluorescent microscopy, a hypoxic facility and chemical characterization. You will also have excellent written and oral communication skills to write publications and communicate findings at scientific meetings.
Successful applicants will have a strong background in cell biology and protein biochemistry. Experience in inflammatory signalling and epithelial biology will be an advantage but not essential. Applicants should have a PhD in cell biology or a related area.
The Department been recently awarded a Silver Athena SWAN award.
This is a full-time role and fixed-term for 12 months.

BUTCH: Not like the other girls debuted 2013 in Vancouver, as public art in bus shelters and at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, where the show’s opening spilled out into the street for half a block, the largest in their 35-year history. The media around Butch: Not like the other girls went viral, with shares and posts from as far away as Germany and Denmark, and impassioned calls for the project to tour to other cities. A Kickstarter campaign started (and succeeded!) to tour the exhibition and to create a catalogue to go with it.
I can just hope the exhibition will come to Europe one day 🙂 In the meantime, I will have to settle for the catalogue. A beautiful tribute to all butches by a great butch: SD Holman:

Next steps for the new staff landing page design
During the last two weeks, the Department of Marketing & Communications has been testing two versions of a new staff landing page design on the live website.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the test, chose to use the new designs and sent comments.
During the test, we collected your feedback and usage data about both versions of the new design.
We're now analysing the data to compare the two versions and see which one works best and reviewing feedback to understand what you think works well or not so well. We'll use the results to make improvements to the page.
When we publish the new design, you can still feed back on it using the ‘Suggest an improvement’ link at the bottom of the page. We’ll continue to develop the page as part of our commitment to making the website better.

Freelance Friday 036 – Dec 14 2018
We’re getting close to Christmas and I’m prepping content while I’ll be off which means just after Christmas I’ll start the year with a content break. In fact, there will likely be a fairly big content revamp for me coming in the months ahead. To see it starting make sure you tune in to my video next Thursday to see my content planning process.

The biggest problem with most people’s productivity is that they don’t do their review. Monday I tackled what a good review looks like and how to stage it so you don’t get overwhelmed.

1. Cal Newport on The Attention Blogs Get
Cal Newport writing on his own site:
As I noted in Deep Work, if you took the contents of the standard Facebook or Instagram feed and published it on a blog, it wouldn’t attract any readers, or comments, or links. But put this content on a Facebook wall and there’s an implicit social contract in place to motivate the people you know to click a like button, or leave a nice comment in the anticipation that you’ll do the same.
He says that blogs are a capitalist attention market because you have to have something worth reading for people to show up. If you don’t provide value, people aren’t just going to click like as your content goes by in their feed. They’re never going to see it.
I think that so many businesses and people have defaulted to the easy attention, which has low value, that social media brings. That leaves content niches available to blog about.

2. Darius Foroux recommends some books

A few of these were added to my list, but I’m going to have to object strongly with Jordan B. Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life as a recommendation. Yes, I agree that the rules themselves are good and I would stand behind many of them. I’ve told my coaching clients many of the same thing.
Peterson’s book though…each chapter has about 4 useful pages and then 20 pages of random philosophical content that never seems connected to the main point of the book. There are some downright objectionable things said in there even. He seems to go from citation of his sources to throwing out blanket statements without a source.
I’ve got one chapter to go, and you should see my full review in 2019, but I can’t see how one chapter will redeem the quality of the book for me.
3. Cheri Baker and 8 Months without Facebook

Do you know what the best part of being off Facebook is? I thought it would be having more privacy, or feeling less addicted to checking social media, but what I love most is something else entirely. Now that I’m off Facebook, when I’m with my friends, I’m actually with my friends.
This is one of the struggles around my house. My wife is “spending time with me” while looking at Facebook. Usually for some buy and sell item or on the marketplace, but still it always seems like an effort to get her to put that phone down and actually interact with me.
Now, I do have a Facebook account for a single book group but come to think of it, I haven’t actually posted in the group in two months despite doing the reading and attending the meetings. Maybe I should just delete the account finally because I think Facebook is 99% bad and maybe 1% useful.

I use a Bullet Journal, but I’ve got my daily routines in Things. It’s all about what works for a specific job.

5. Phones suck the life out of a room
David James Swanson for raptitude:
The no-phones policy illuminated something about smartphone use that’s hard to see when it’s so ubiquitous: our phones drain the life out of a room. They give everyone a push-button way to completely disengage their mind from their surroundings, while their body remains in the room, only minimally aware of itself. Essentially, we all have a risk-free ripcord we can pull at the first pang of boredom or desire for novelty, and of course those pangs occur constantly.
I’d say that devices suck the energy out of a room. I’ve been thinking about this a bunch as I hang out with friends and my kids.
I should not let my attention be going to my device.

The need to decarbonise society is becoming critical. This includes the built environment. This post is part of a very large grant of £36m made by the UK into designing and constructing buildings which produce more energy than they use. These next generation buildings are now starting to be built as demonstrators, yet it remains unknown if they can become the norm, what the limits are or what might be the best architecture and construction? This post will examine these limits from both a technical angle and a social/economic one. You will be required to carry out and economic analysis of the situation, hold focus groups and complete social surveys); discover the limits, then write a series of high quality journal papers. You will be joining a large team of researchers across the UK and the EDEn research group at Bath.
This post is one of two full time Research Associate roles for the Active Buildings Centre (ABC) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis with an anticipated expiry date of 02 March 2022.

Despite the fact that it may just look like a small pimple, it can be extremely painful due to skin inflammation. Also, if the condition is not properly treated, it may leave permanent scars on your skin. Scarring can occur both when too much or too less collagen is released by your body during the healing process of the wound. Another negative impact of acne on teens is the fact that it may affect their self-esteem. Researchers have suggested that adolescents who have acne tend to feel sad, anxious, shy and lonely. Unfortunately, teens tend to be mean to each other and bully their classmates with acne. Therefore, it can seriously damage their self-esteem.

First of all, the best treatment for acne is prevention. There are a few tips that may help you control the appearance of acne. Do not over-wash your face or use harsh scrubs as it may leave your skin irritated and dry. Also, oil-free or noncomedogenic products will not clog your pores avoiding skin inflammation. Moreover, to avoid the development of scarring, resist the temptation of squeezing or picking blemishes. There are varying degrees of acne and different recommendations for acne treatment for teens. Depending on whether you are suffering from mild, moderate, or severe acne, it is important to use the right treatment that will both eliminate your acne and keep your skin healthy on every level. The treatments for acne usually contain compounds such as azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and various fruit acids.
