It’s time for everyone to agree that octopuses aren’t from Earth
Today on the show, we talked about Inky, an octopus that recently escaped from a New Zealand aquarium. We had a hard time believing some of the things we heard about Inky’s “great escape” — so we started to snoop around on octopuses.
Turns out we didn’t know the half of it.
Here are just a few of the craziest things we learned about them:
1. Octopuses can taste with all of their skin, but especially well with their suckers
2. They can squeeze through tiny spaces very easily. A 100-lb. octopus can easily fit through an opening the size of an orange.
3. They’re also crazy strong. A 3-inch-diameter sucker on a giant Pacific octopus can lift 30 pounds.
4. They’re brilliant camouflage artists, and can completely change color in a blink of an eye.
5. On a sad note, some octopuses have been known to eat their own arms. Scientists think it may be a response to stress or some kind of infection.
6. They actually escape from aquariums quite often. Octopuses are very curious animals, and are extremely effective problem-solvers.
They can also open jars. JARS THAT THEY’RE INSIDE OF.

In the end, Inky successfully made his way back to the sea, leaving only a trail of water from his tank to that drainpipe of freedom. 🐙

Today the Department of Beguiling Book Art is adorning themselves in the literary jewels created by London-based artist Jeremy May of Littlefly. May creates one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art by laminating together hundreds of pages from old books, shaping them into rings, bracelets, necklaces, and more, and then finishing them with a high gloss coating. The pages are carefully removed from their books so that the finished jewelry can be re-inserted into the excavated space.
Visit the Littlefly website to check out many more of Jeremy May’s literary jewels. He also has work on display through April 24th in a group exhibition at the RR Gallery in NYC entitled Read and Worn: Jewelry From Books.

Make sure to look at the gif for at least 20 seconds, otherwise it won’t work that well! This is definitely the most fun I’ve had while making a post.

Being sick when you’re in med school:
My parents: You should go to the doctor and get medication
Me: It’s viral
Them: But maybe they can give you something
Me: They will give me a paper saying “drink lots of fluids, pain reliever for muscle aches, blah blah blah”
Them:
Me: You’re not gonna let this go, are you?
1 hour later at the clinic…
Them: What did the doctor say?
Me: She said it’s viral.
Them: What did she give you?
Me: Nothing. It’s viral.
Me (in my head because I know better):
Them: But my friend had a virus this week and they gave her antibiotics..
Me:
Them: Maybe you should ask for a second opinion.
Me (because my sass filter could not be contained anymore): My $200,000 dollar loan says we don’t need one.
Them:
Me: Yes. I love you. Let’s go home. *smiley face*
In my head:
