Karley’s eyes stay on Breda for a few devastatingly silent couple of seconds, considering the offer and what was meant by it. He turns his gaze back down to his clipboard and examines his papers, brows raised delicately. From his perspective, Breda’s reaction confirmed the lie. In the lieutenant’s surprise, Karley gathers he wasn’t aware what exactly gave him away. His tell is still an unconscious habit. 

“I’d be more than up for a couple rounds,” he responds coolly before making a quick, precise mark on the page and tucking the clipboard under his arm so he can once again meet Breda’s eyes, “if you’re prepared to owe me a shitload of money.”

back home, in Wiradu, my neighbors three down th’ line had a big ol’ pond on th’ south side ‘f their acreage; an’ they always kept a handful of call ducks. th’ fluffy little white ones, that is, with orange bills.

we mostly see grouse. game birds and the like.

wiradu, huh? shoulda guessed it’d be somewhere i never heard of--you sound like you grew up in the country. always been more of a city boy myself, til i moved up north that is.

geez, no need to get upset about it. i’m not gonna kill any ducks. i don’t have time or the hunting skills for that anyway. uhh...where’d you know ducks?

hmmmnnn. I generally understand where you’re comin’ from but… I dunno. it just seems too special not t’  live a long, peaceful life… maybe find it a big beautiful lake somewhere t’ raise some giant ducklings… if the mom was the size of a horse, would ducklings be dog sized???
